I visited there on the way of Jakkoin temple. I used only cafe, not accomodation. Foot bath was equipped in the cafe. We ordered drink and were given towels too. We put feet into bath during drinking.

Super nice English speaking hosts. Beautiful new “green” tatami on floors. We didn’t eat here but it smelled delicious. The onsen was lovely with both inside and outside soaks. The 15 minute walk on a path over the river and past old farms to the Ryokan was a delight in the dark and in the morning. A truly relaxing lovely place to take a break from touring Kyoto.

So when we booked the hotel we got an email from the Onsen. Ryoken on how to get there. The first part is fine (17 bus from Kyoto station to Ohara station) - btw this is around an hour bus ride to Ohara bus stop and then it is 20 minute walk from the bus stop or 5 minute shuttle ride. We got there around 17:00 and it was very dark and the maps were not great to tell you how to get there or the Jakkoin Temple. I would recommend a couple of things. Either look at times for shuttle bus (or have phone ready to call the Ryoken to pick you up from Ohara bus stop) or get there early when it is still light to walk to the Onsen. The walk up there is fine but there are not a lot of lights around. Just do your research on how to get there or have google maps ready. Once we got there though this is a fantastic stay and you get to explore and enjoy traditional Onsen and Ryoken. The food was decent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

We are a family of 4 wanting to experience a ryokan. This ryokan, of traditional Japanese inn, offered exactly that. The ryokan is not luxurious, but it has tons of character. The staff are attentive and will make you feel welcome. We arrived late at night so it was wonderful to have been picked up by the shuttle bus. As we had missed dinner, once we settled into our room the shuttle was make available to us to go to the nearby supermarket and stock on food for the evening. The room was basic and the bathroom was shared. Breakfast was traditional Japanese with fish, rice and pickles. We explored Ohara on foot, with a lovely walk down the hill and into the fields. The real treat came with the private onsen, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Dinner with its hot pot was the highlight of our stay, the dinning hall is nice and the garden well looked after. This is not a luxurious but really charming ryokan that will make a trip to Kyoto truly memorable. The staff who spoke English, and even those who didn't, did all they could to help us get onto our next destination.

Kyo no Minshuku Ohara no Sato 民宿大原の里 is not far from Kyoto city, but it was out from the busy area. It had few buildings all connected but it also had a lot of stairs. It was quite difficult to carry up. The room and dining area had air con and not anywhere else. It also had outdoor onsen around with trees. Dinner was nice, it was miso onsen which made by themselves with different miso for dipping as well.
