If you are visiting a ryokan for a cultural experience, then this is the place for you. Whilst it does not provide the western comfort of a hotel, it has given us a truly authentic experience for our first trip to Japan (at a reasonable price considering how expensive ryokans are in Kyoto). We have never experienced such thoughtful and...

We stayed here in just one night in October 16 to experience a Japanese cultural experience and feel fortunate we chose Hiiragiya bekkan. We chose a garden facing room with a toilet and was very happy with the room we got. The building itself is about 150 years old and is a Machiya, wooden house, so naturally sound insulation isn't...

I agree with other reviewers that for the price you pay, Hiiragiya Bekkan is reasonable. I've been to Kyoto many times. This trip I brought my daughter and granddaughters for their first trip to Japan. Being California teenagers, a ryokan experience is a must. They LOVED it..The rituals of scheduled bathing, 9 course-dinner served in our room, and of course,...

It's expensive, but if you do want to try the ryokan experience, I think it's a pretty good option. Price wise, based on our research it's about average. Location is better than a lot of other options in that it is accessible by public transport (but it's still about a 10min walk to the subway). A cab ride from Kyoto...

I hesitated before giving this place four starts instead of five. The only reason I gave it 4 was because I saw their sister ryokan and know you can definitely get nicer ryokan, but not for this price. For the price it is five stars. The service was impeccable, the ryokan was clean, the beds were comfy and the food...

Service at the Hiiragiya Bekkan is both courteous and friendly. The rooms are simple yet maintains an air of elegance. The location is also highly convenient, for both walking around Kyoto or taking the public transit. Most importantly, the traditional meals (Kaiseki) served here is top quality and is an absolute must-try. The menu changes day-to-day, so every breakfast and...

We stayed 2 nights in early December and have a great visit. The only negatives were that a loud truck woke us up the first night, a chatty group of 5 women woke us up the 2nd night (although that problem was quickly resolved via a call to the front desk, and they kindly gave us two pairs of Hiiragiya...

This ryokan was just lovely. Our room faced a beautiful little garden and it was just so relaxing to sit and look at it. The service here is great and the staff is very friendly. The food was good and they did a nice job of trying to explain what everything was and how to eat it. The onsens are...

My wife and I stayed here for one night. We had both dinner and breakfast included in our stay. Both meals were multi-course traditions Japanese. My wife and I are quite adventurous eaters; however, some of the plates in both meals were quite challenging for us. It was an extremely memorable and rewarding experience none the less. We had a...

Service is beyond expectation. The person who was serving us is very friendly, speaks sufficient English to make small conversations. You could even leave your luggage there on the day you check out and come back at night to pick it up. Breakfast was Jap-styled. Different kinds of Jap pickles + tofu + grilled fish + other veggies. Dinner is...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
