I absolutely love staying at Guest House Bon. Taniguchi-san, the owner, is such a warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful host, with decent English skills. He will sit down with you and a map and explain in detail how to get to restaurants, sites, etc. He will drive you to the subway station when you're leaving. The Guest House itself is...

Clean and comfy, with a host that is genuinely helpful. Guesthouse Bon is a great authentic Japanese homestay like experience. Easy to access frequent bus service to central Kyoto, positioned in a real neighborhood with nice restaurants. Recommended

Guesthouse Bon was such a lovely traditional home to stay for the 5 nights we were in Kyoto. The owner, was very welcoming and gave nice a complete run down of everything in the area, complete with maps and detailed ways to get there. He always was happy to put himself out and take time to give us advice. Loves...

I really love Guesthouse Bon. Mr/ Mrs Taniguchi are really helpful and recommended a lot of good restaurant around the guesthouse. Staying here is like staying in you own house. Transportation is easy to access especially via bus. Taking bus in Kyoto is convenient and easy. It might far from Kyoto Station which approximately taking 30-40mins to go back to...

My family and I stayed at the guesthouse for 4 nights. It is located in a residential area at suburb of the city, quiet a distant walk from the nearest subway, Kitoaji Station. There is no road sign, so follow closely to the map given on the website. It will take about 1/2 hour to travel by bus from Kyoto...

Incredible stay. It was like beeing at home. The family was so incredible nice and helpfull. From the first moment they made us feel like at our own house. They helped us with our stay, sightseeing and all we could need. Located in a very nice and calm part of kyoto ( like a small village) but surrounded by 4...

I stayed at the guest house for 3 nights and loved it there. Transportation was fairly easy especially after the owner recommended getting one day bus tickets. There's also local food which was amazing and cheap! The guest house is perfect for 2-3 people and the owner is super nice and hardworking. He even gave me a ride to the...

We loved our stay at Kazuo-san's place. It's a very nice laid-back neighbourhood next to a temple complex without any tourists. If you use the bikes (definitely cheaper than elsewhere!) it's great cruising around the riverbank to the city centre or to the philosopher's path. The bamboo garden and Kinkakuji are a nice ride as well.Lots of restaurants and local...

...However, we didn't find these to be big issues. Especially since we were there in June (2015) so the semi-outdoors washrooms weren't a problem. We had no issues with the water. We did get to know the other guest pretty well too. The location is indeed not as convenient as people here make it seem. 15 min walking to the...

Yes it is not close to the centre of kyoto and yes the neighbourhood is a bit dead after 9pm. But you can pinpoint that on a map before booking and its an easy transport by subway and bus. I guess it depenss what your looking for. I absolutely loved staying at Bon, the owner and his wife are adorable...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
