The guesthouse is well connected (close to the central station and the main bus lines), clean, well kept and has the traditional Japanese falvour that you won't find in a hotel. The landlady is very helpful and well-mannered. All in all, for us it was a great experience.

Spent 3 nights in this wonderful inn last November. We stayed there as a group of 9 people and we take all the rooms. (Total of three.) The room comes with a Japanese style mattress (futon). However no toilets. There is one male and one female toilet, and only one bath. Queuing could be painful. You also need to carry...

Traditional Japanese home style with clean cosy environment. Easy to get here by bus from the main station. Even if you are a bag-packer with budget, here is still worthy for stay a night to experience the lovely warm hospitality and the atmosphere.

This is a small, simple ryokan 15 mins by foot from Kyoto station. The proprietor is very friendly and speaks good English; e-mail confirmations arrived promptly and reliably. The rooms are clean and well-kept, and come with a kettle, a hairdryer and wifi. There is a communal fridge, but, since no breakfast is included, some further cutlery and crockery would...

Great location (hard to find - japan is not fond of street names). Very nice host with good english and nice demeanor. Ryokan room is small, but perfect. Price is reasonable. Skip the glitz and stay here. Free wifi was nice too.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
