We spent 3 nights at the Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Honganji and we loved every minute of it. We booked the American style room that included 2 twin beds (we were not up for sleeping in a traditional ryokan room) with a bathroom in the room. We were very pleased with our accommodations as our room was very clean and included...

People there are very nice. The English-speaking staff is very helpful. We liked the location of the hotel, not only because it is near Kyoto Station but also Honganji temple is 2 minutes walk from the hotel. We went to Nishi Honganji twice and loved walking barefoot through the large wood corridors. Our room was on the 2nd floor with...

It's a lovely comfy Japanese style ryokan. It's at a quiet block very near to Kyoto station, around 15min walk. Staff are very handy and friendly. The restaurants they recommended are very good as well, better to have a reservation before you go coz they are way popular. LOL The only drawback is that the acoustic isolation between rooms is...

Very nicely designed modern-style Ryokan. You receive your Yukata to wear. Each room has its own bathroom. The baked salmon breakfast was excellent. The staff are all really great. We were given a very thorough explanation of our room and how to make the bed. Short walk from bus stops. Very fast wifi connection of around 1mb up/down.

This is a beautiful city ryokan with friendly staff. My husband and I had never stayed in a ryokan before but I had a general understanding of how they work. In this hotel, the traditional rooms allow you, as the customer, to bring out and put away the futon bed as you please. The staff do not make your bed...

Loved my stay here! As a first timer in Japan, I was looking for a place with a traditional Japanese room but geared more towards tourists (i.e. English speakers available, no curfew, and late check in available). Staff are super friendly and helpful. They thought of everything I would need and thoroughly prepared us for navigating Kyoto with English maps,...

The hotel is close to the Kyoto Station and the Service was excellent, The rooms were small but comfortable. No thrills of a hotel but if you have a budget, then this hotel would be a great choice for you. However, I did ask for an extra blanket, but they did not have one available.

If you are looking for a ryokan experience (assuming you are not from Japan or just want to try staying in a traditional Japanese Inn) in Kyoto, this is the place for you! We stayed in the Japanese Style room, which included: 6 tatami mats, 2 yukatas, paper sliding doors, a fridge, kettle, WiFi and of course futons! Location is...

We loved this hotel, we stayed in the Japanese style room, and although i was in an internal crisis over sleeping on the floor, i was surprised to have a very pleasant and confortable two nights there, the front desk has this charming and welcoming girls, and they serve the fastest non buffet breakfast i've ever seen. The rooms are...

We chose to come here after very good experience in their Tokyo branch - Edo Sakura. The staff is excellent, friendly and very helpful. The location is good - a quiet street about 15 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. Public transportation nearby, but we chose to walk everywhere. Many places of interest were within one hour or less walking distance....

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
