If you are looking for a ryokan experience (assuming you are not from Japan or just want to try staying in a traditional Japanese Inn) in Kyoto, this is the place for you! We stayed in the Japanese Style room, which included: 6 tatami mats, 2 yukatas, paper sliding doors, a fridge, kettle, WiFi and of course futons! Location is...

We loved this hotel, we stayed in the Japanese style room, and although i was in an internal crisis over sleeping on the floor, i was surprised to have a very pleasant and confortable two nights there, the front desk has this charming and welcoming girls, and they serve the fastest non buffet breakfast i've ever seen. The rooms are...

We chose to come here after very good experience in their Tokyo branch - Edo Sakura. The staff is excellent, friendly and very helpful. The location is good - a quiet street about 15 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. Public transportation nearby, but we chose to walk everywhere. Many places of interest were within one hour or less walking distance....

My experience in this "modern ryokan" is rather mixed, to say the least. On the plus side: + It is conveniently located, not far from the JR Kyoto station, between the two Honganji temples and very close to a Lawson store (open 24 hours a day) + The rooms are large enough (provided that you do not spend your whole...

Book a room and I chosed Japanese Style and I didn't know/I forgot that in Japan they don't use beds like we do in Europe so I was very surprised when I came up to the room and saw that I had to sleep on the phone floor. I have nothing bad to say about the hotel the staff was...

This was my husband's and my first experience in a traditional ryokan. We stayed in one of the Sukiya-style rooms with a garden and are so glad we did. The tatami mats were fresh and slightly green, giving the room a wonderful aroma that we noticed as soon as we stepped inside. We loved the functionality of the room and...

We had a pleasant experience at the hotel. The room are large which was a nice surprise as generally rooms in Japan tend to be small. We had the the western room and I'm sure the Japanese style room are just as good. The staff is really nice and helpful. The hotel provides daily activities if you want. Around 5mins walk...

This cozy ryokan is located in very quiet area not far from the railway station, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk. We stayed in a "western style" room which had two twin beds and a nice wooden floor We were therefore kindly requested to leave our shoes at the door. Even though it was rather small (by Western...

My GF and I wanted to experience a traditional house for our first time in Japan. I must say it was a great choice, we were both enchanted by the mood and coziness of the room. We took the sukiya style room with a small private garden, very zen and relaxing. regarding the comfort, I would say i slept well...

We spent four wonderful nights at Sakura, conveniently located in a quiet, traditional area that is also relatively central and close to many great sights. It's one block removed from Nishi Hongan-Ji, but only a 10- or 15-minute walk from bustling Kyoto Station. If you don't want to walk, there's a bus stop very close, and it provides reliable service...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
