I stayed in Uronza for 3 nights and lived in a Tatami single room. Although there is only a tatami bed, I found it very comfortable and had no problem for sleeping. But one point to note is that there is no sound proofing in the house, you have to lower your voice and reduce the sound you make. The... More

I stayed here for 4 nights and it is a great traditional style wooden guesthouse. The place is absolutely spotless and the rooms are cozy and comfy. There is even a small zen garden downstairs. As it is a traditional style place you sleep on a futon on tatami mats. They were very warm and cozy even though it was... More

We stayed in Uronza guesthouse for five nights in March 2013. The architecture and interior design are stunning. The owner Hidi maintains his guesthouse very well and keeps the place exceptionally clean. He helped us by providing local information & was interesting to talk to as he has travelled extensively himself. On our booking in he explained some house rules... More

I've been to Japan twice but never had I experience tatami bed before. Uronza gave me the opportunity to try tatami bed when I visited in early April. The weather that time was still cold and I wore my winter jacket each time I went to the toilets and baths (as the toilets and baths are not connected to the... More

The guesthouse is comfortable and pretty quiet. Rooms are fairly spacious, and the toilets and baths maintained well and very clean. The rules of the house are fairly valid and shd pose no concern. Try reaching the place before 9 pm when u check in as it gets fairly quiet after that and no one to ask for directions .... More

We stay 6nights in this lovely place during Sakura season. The location is great and the place is very very clean. The room is basic but after the whole day walking or cycling in Kyoto, it is a warm and cozy room to sleep. Shower is good and modern. Bathroom is the cleanest I have ever seen in my life.... More

Great house, very clean and very fresh, and a nice helpful owner, speaking good english. The house was quite new and for the price it's excellent. There are some baths quite closeby and you can take the bus (or a longer walk ) to the market and Gion. The only thing i found a bit nonlikeable (but which is clearly... More

Tucked down an unassuming side street in central Kyoto, Uronza is a real hidden gem. As we walked from the subway to the guest house, I was having a hard time imagining a traditional Japanese house in the midst of the city. However, once we turned down the back streets and started walking past dinky little boutiques and eateries, things... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
