The experience starts at the pier where guests are taken by boat along the river valley. There were days when there were fog lingering down the valley creating that out of the world feeling. The villa has a perfect view to the mountain and river yet well hidden within the hill side to give the privacy. The tranquility cannot be...

It is frankly unpleasant to have to write a really tough and bad review on a hotel or restaurant. After all, behind each and every commercial activity, there are a number of employees, often working hard, and who often bear no responsibility for the failures and weaknesses of their employer. On the other side, there are instances where the need...

Few places in this world carry the ability to welcome guests in every season. Cherry Blossom season is unbelievable but I can only imagine what this place must look like in winter and autumn. I need to see this for myself one day. Wow!!! What a setting and how peaceful can you really get? Kyoto has so much to offer...

A mixed review for this resort got us a bit worried to go here after doing some research, but we are glad we choose to keep our reservation. The boat by Arashiyama station took us on a roughly 10min journey through beautiful river/mountain scenery to the Ryokan. Upon arrival, we were met by a designated check in person. Yes -...

Great sense of arrival by using a boat to reach the ryokan. It made me feel someone special. The room is separated to two spaces, dining space and bed room. I needed little bit more relaxing space within the private space. The room was full of Hoshino's private brand products. There are full of public space that guests can use...

Superb ryokan in Kyoto, not the most traditional but the interior is definitely well designed. The room service was cool, but the kaiseki set dinner at the restaurant was a bit overpriced. Overall, the experience was good, but the grounds seems a little small for a Hoshinoya experience, and there is no hot spring!

2 night Nov 2016 Hotel Its raison d’etre: Fabulous riverside location, surrounded by wooded hills, rather being surrounded by urban development as is more usual in Japan. As a result, it’s a very peaceful and relaxing place. Very hard to beat the one-off unique “arrival experience” on the hotel’s charming private water taxi. However, this does make it a bit...

The arrival at Hoshinoya is outstanding. An idyllic boat trip complete with blankets and hot water bottles, brilliantly welcoming staff and a lovely entrance into the property. The room was lovely, fronting the river and with a comfortable bed and all basic requirements. A nice touch of a welcome bottle of sparkling sake. The first night we dined at the...

You must experience this to understand why I can't write a more detailed review. Everything is so Japanese, thoughtful, serine and traditional. From your boat ride in to traditional Japanese in room breakfasts. The only "complaint" I have is that my lounge clothing did not fit at all. Sizes were made for tiny Japanese women not a curvy American lady...

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
