Our room came with an instruction manual; 10 pages on how to operate the thermostat, 2 pages on the hotplate embedded in the kitchenette, and 2 pages on the toilet. Welcome to Japan. This hotel offered just what we needed for a three-day tourist trip to Kyoto: Gojo is one subway stop from the main station; many things to see...

< 1 minute's walk from the exit to Karasuma Gojo subway station which is only a stop from JR Kyoto station. Can easily access attractions close to the subway, or take a cab to the rest (such as Kinkakuji, Kiyomizudera etc) which are not readily accessible via subway. There's almost always a cab waiting outside the hotel, and for short...

We were a bit sceptical about booking this place as the rooms looked a bit basic. We trusted the other reviewers though and glad that we did. The furnishings were not luxury of course and the rooms are small, but they are clean and comfortable. The kitchenette is equipped with pots / pans / toaster etc so you can fix...

We spent a lot of time and effort researching location and hotels for our first trip to Kyoto, and eventually settled on this hotel mainly due to the many glowing Trip Advisor reviews. Our 15 day stay is almost over and we are extremely happy with our decision. Gojo Station is only a minute away and only one stop from...

We stayed 4 nights and had a very relaxing time. Staff were courteous and efficient. We particularly appreciated 2pm check in time (early for Japan in my experience) and 12pm check out. Room was plenty big enough, in fact quite generous for a moderately priced Kyoto hotel. Location was convenient. I saw some reviewers complaining about a lack of a...

It's my second time staying in this apartment 6 years later. It is much bigger than the normal hotels in Japan. It's near the subway and the room is clean and comfortable. Staff at the reception are able to communicate in simple English. The apartment is also walkable to the main street and it takes around 20-30 minutes. What surprises...

My second Citadine stay and they continue to provide good value for their apartments. I liked the rooms very much and the only reason it did not score the highest value was due to the size of the bathroom which was just alittle small -but that is usual across most of Japan. But one excellent attention to detail was their...

Stayed here for 5 nights in October 2016. Our room (overlooking the main street ) was neat and clean and quiet. The staff could speak english and were all very helpful with our questions. There are dinning and laundry facilities in the basement area that were of a high quality. You cant beat the location. There is a McDonalds on...

Book this hotel rather last minute. 3 weeks before my trip. At first am a bit worried why this apartment still has availability at last minute. Upon arrival, found out that the worry is uncalled for. location wise is excellent. It above a subway station. Remember to take exit 6 when you have bulky luggage. Exit 1 is just outside...

Not the choice for you if you want to stay in a "local" Kyoto type area. However, as this was our first trip here the location was perfect for getting to all the places we wanted to see. The North/South subway station Gojo was a few steps from the hotel door and you only had to go two stops to...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
