Welcome to Hana Hostel. “Hana” means “Flower” in Japanese. We try to be a fresh and cheery hostel like a lotus flower floating in the pond. Kyoto Hana Hostel opened in April, 2010.The building used to be a local “Ryokan”. We remodeled this into an advanced international hostel. As we are very close from the station and the guest rooms are well-equipped, we will be an good option to stay for not only backpackers but also for ordinary tourists with suits cases.

Detailed Reviews
I stayed in Hana Hostel for one night and had a bunk bed. When I arrived early, I was informed that the room was not ready yet, but I could leave my luggage in the luggage room. Also, the staff settled my registration and showed me around the hostel.
There is a pretty large kitchen with free tea and coffee that you can brew. I enjoyed the genmaicha here. In this space, you can also interact with other guests. Wifi here is generally strong but it can disconnect you at times.
Like any hostel, you are expected to fit your own sheets in the bed, and remove them at check out. The bed was pretty comfortable and I liked that they provided curtains around the bunk beds for privacy and to block out the light in the event you want to sleep earlier than other bunk bed guests. The shower has soap and shampoo provided. If you didn't bring your own towel, you can rent one for ¥100.
Overall this was a pretty good stay, and I liked that Lawson's was just on the opposite street so it was easy to get breakfast.

Loved staying at Hana Hostel. Staff was very cool. Very willing to help with any questions about Kyoto, and they provided some great recommendations for restaurants, etc, There is an amazing Gyu-Katsu restaurant just down the street, and for music lovers, check out "Davada Coffee and Records" just around the corner. The owner there makes awesome Cafe Latte, has a great selection of vinyl at very reasonable prices. Very easy to get to Hana Hostel from Kyoto station. Just use google maps and you can stay in the underground until popping up ver near the entrance of Hana Hostel.

The hostel is perfectly located and very near to Kyoto railway station and many hotels. The rooms are clean and maintained well.
Staffs are friendly and ready to help at any time. They do have a washing machine (pay and use) and dryer which is very useful for people staying for more days.

DO NOT STAY HERE, worst hostel I’ve stayed in. Just checked in and immediately cancelled my following nights. Full of very sick people, bad smell, unclean, no space for luggage. Man in our room has been sick with the flu for 4 days and hacking loudly all night long constantly. Management said there’s nothing they can do. Place is full so no one can change rooms. Lack of basic health protocols Was told multiple people complained and asked to be moved. I’ve stayed in other hostels in the area and this was by far the worst. I’ve cancelled my following nights and found other accommodations. Far from the downtown. Only good thing is it’s close to the station.

I stayed here 1 night beginning of June 2013 in a dorm style room. When I woke up in the morning and turned on the lights, there were bed bugs all over my bed and on the walls. I had to look up what those bugs were because I'd never encountered them before. They were bed bugs! Considering the number of bugs that were clearly visible (the linens were white) it was probably quite an infestation. Needless to say I was completely disgusted, grossed out, not to mention having to deal with the aftermath of being bitten numerous times =(
Even though this hostel was very conveniently located and easy to find, and the staff was friendly, I would never ever stay there again.

I stayed here for a night because I extended my stay in Kyoto and could not stay at my first hostel. This hostel is clean (as is mostly everything in Japan), just as cheap as all the others (2500 Yen per night in a dorm) and centrally located (just as a lot of other hostels, too). The building is very cramped, not a lot of space, very few windows in the dorms. The beds are great, though, very big. The info (maps etc.)they provide is also provided by other hostels or any tourist information.
Staff is friendly but not too interested. Having stayed in a LOT of hostels during the past months and MANY of them in Japan, I have to say that the atmosphere here is bad. Travellers barely greet each other, there are constantly some men hanging around and it doesn't become clear whether they are travellers or work there because they don't greet either. Loners sitting around the very small common room/ kitchen watching TV, weird people having a lot of alcohol for breakfast - brrr. No, I was glad to leave! I've stayed in a few of other hostels and strongly recommend K's house chain, they are great, personable, have very nice buildings and offer great opportunities to meet people. Hana hostel does not.

Are you looking for a reasonable hotel?
Kyoto Hana Hostel is one of the affordable accommodations.
Aside from that, it's fairly accessible to JR Kyoto station.
Actually, it only takes around five minutes on foot.

The best part about Kyoto Hana Hostel for me was its convenient location. It's proximity to the Kyoto JR station made it a great base for day trips out of the city. But the overall experience at this hostel was not as pleasant as I had hoped.
This hostel does not have a lift so heavy packers please take note, this might not be the place for you! In my three nights there, we stayed at two different types of rooms because the private room was only available for two nights and we had to change to the Japanese family room on our last night. I did not like my stay at the Japanese room as the weak heater and the full length windows made the room incredibly cold.
So do avoid the Japanese room especially during winter!

The hostel is right near Kyoto Station, which is super convenient. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was huge, which is unusual for Japan. The wifi worked well as did the AC. There was a small but cozy common area with a decently stocked kitchen. The beds were a bit hard.
The facilities in general were a bit old, but clean. It is a little annoying that they charge 100 yen for towels--seems like they could just include that in the room fee.

This was a rare gem of a place. 5 - 6 minute walk from Kyoto Station. Super clean modern facility. Separate Locked storage room. Closed shoe compartment. Free cancellation up to 2-days prior to arrival with proper notice. No additional fees (surcharge) for credit card use. Immediate paper receipt in yen and $ conversion. Friendly, helpful, English speaking staff. Free WiFi, coffee/tea. Would stay again. Highly recommended -- incredible bargain for quality and price in Kyoto!
