Rather than echo the comments others have left about the physical attributes about this hotel, I will give examples of the highest level of service that I have ever experienced from the staff I encountered. I had 4 exchanged email with questions about the hotel, restaurant recommendations, and the electric bikes, and heard back promptly from both Yoko M. and...

The hotel is about 15 mins walk from the kyoto train station (towards kyoto tower direction and pass a temple on your left). The room we had was large- large bathroom, two large beds, ample space to lay another 2 futons on the floor and still have sitting place for the table and chairs. We are a family of 5...

We love this hotel. Its a very nice boutique hotel, located at a very convenient yet quiet area. The facilities at the hotel are also top-notch. Breakfast was not included, but you choose to have breakfast at the hotel, like we did for two consecutive days, the breakfast options though not very diverse, are very good and offers value for...

First, the negatives: 1) Service was well intentioned, but a little strange. For example, we were told the restaurant was full, then after requesting again, were told that it wasn't full but we needed to reserve a private room, and then when we showed up, during the entire meal there were only 4 other people in the entire restaurant. 2)...

I was intending to stay at the Four Seasons but as it was full, I landed on this property - and I'm glad I did. It perfectly blends traditional Japanese style with modern living. Clean, simple lines, comfortable linens and furniture - beautiful wooden bath tub. What stood out for me were the front desk staff. I actually made a...

My wife and I really loved this place - it was the best of the half-dozen hotels we stayed at on our Japan trip. It has a feeling of elegance without being at all stuffy - reminds me of the better W Hotels, for example. Boutique kind of feel, modern décor, clean lines of wood and metal. Each room is...

The Hotel Kanra promises boutique styling with a traditional Japanese ethos straigt from the entrance to the room to the scent of nature and pine inside the room that made it a sanctuary just a five minute walk from the Kyoto train station. But the hotel stood out in the details--the child's toothbrush included for my 7-year old, beds made...

We fell in love with this hotel the second we walked in. It's a newly renovated Japanese style modern hotel. The rooms were spacious and equipped with everything you need. We tried the wooden bath, and it felt amazing!! Would be better if there were complimentary bath salt provided. The service here is very personalized; although this is a medium...

The Japanes decoration is amazing. It is really clean and practical. However the room is a little small so bring small luggages. The breakfast is a little expensive and very limited. The location is very good and close to the station.

My family and I absolutely loved this hotel. It was the perfect retreat after long days touring the temples in Kyoto and I loved soaking in the Cypress bathtub in our room each evening. The rooms are a nice combination of Japanese design ascetic integrated with a few nice Western comforts. The design of the bathroom and other living areas...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
