With its rendering and design of light and shade, it is a hotel that will make you appreciate the wabi-sabi (beauty of quiet simplicity) of Kyoto culture. There are 11 types of guestrooms, ranging in size from 17m2 to 35m2. The guestroom interiors combine Kyoto culture with modern design, so you are sure to connect even more with Kyoto during your stay. Diners can choose from a Japanese or western menu. Kyoto's traditional "Okayu" thin rice porridge is the main Japanese dish, while the western menu includes the popular Kyoto pickles and egg sandwich.

Hotel Tou Nishinotoin in Kyoto garners high marks for its exceptional service, with staff who are both helpful and conversant in English, as noted by numerous travelers. The hotel's cleanliness, particularly its pristine onsen, is often highlighted, and its location is celebrated for being close to major attractions, though a few guests note it's a bit distant from subway stations.
The minimalist, modern design with traditional flourishes is widely appreciated, creating a serene and elegant atmosphere. While rooms are on the smaller side, they are stylishly appointed, and the hotel's amenities, including the onsen and laundry facilities, are popular among guests who also find the pricing to offer good value.

Detailed Reviews

It is located north of the main railway station, not in a tourist area. The public transit bus/subway is pretty extensive and can take you to all tourist spots with time.
The hotel is of a black tone with highlighted rocks as the focus, which gives a nice calm and harmony feeling. The entrance is a long hallway to adjust to darker inside. The environment is very quiet. The furnitures are modern and stylish.
The service is very good.
The front desk does speak some English and you can use the multiple language machine to check in. An English sheet is provided to give info of the facilities.
The public bath, separated for man and woman, is a major selling point. It is spacious, relaxing and clean. Bath robes and slippers are provided to conveniently visit the bath. At the room TV, you can check the crowding level within the baths. An in room safe safeguards your valuables.
The hotel breakfast is pretty good with fish, congee and egg everyday but I prefer some variants from day to day. Unlimited tea/coffee is also included. You can also choose Western breakfast.
The room is of good size, with a long sofa which can be used as a bed. All lights are dimmable which can be adjusted to a nice atmosphere. However, there is no table top nor luggage rack. Although my room is facing the street but the window is fogged (I cannot see outside)!
Only shower is provided in my room. Both shower and toilet are in tinted glass enclosure and white curtain is provided. There is no hanger within the shower which is a bit inconvenient. The toilet has an additional hand washing sink.
Self laundry is also available and you can check when the washers/dryers will be free on the room TV.

Thank you for using hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto. We would also like to thank you once again for posting your feedback from many different perspectives. Our hotel's design is based on the concept of "light and shadow" inside a cave, and is based on black. We create a calm space that you can't find in other hotels, so you can enjoy a relaxing space. We are glad that you were satisfied with our breakfast and public bath. Regarding the rooms, our hotel is located in a residential area, so some rooms have frosted windows. Additionally, there are roll screens behind the shoji screens in all rooms, so some rooms may be closed in advance. If you have any problems, please contact the front staff immediately. Although we have received many comments, we are glad to hear that you were able to relax during your stay. If you have a chance to come to Kyoto again, please come and visit us at hotel tou. Thank you. Best regards hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto

We stayed in this hotel during the visit to see our families in Japan.
I wanted to stay there ever since I saw the photos in one of booking sites.
Very stylish, modern & clean looking hotel and this concept is maintained throughout this designer’s hotel from the lobby to the details of each items of the room.
We stayed in the smallest twins of the us hotel, but it was confortable enough for us. Since they have a common bath like Ryokan, which is also very modern, we didn’t use the one in the room.
Stuffs are very pleasant & helpful.
Two downsides for us were location & no coffee in the room….!
Without luggages, you can walk to the station in 12mins or so & it was not problem. But there are not many places to eat in this area, so you need to either walk to the station or take a bus to Karasuma or Shijo area.
Overall we had a very pleasant stay!

Thank you very much for choosing our hotel for your stay in Kyoto, and for taking the time to share your lovely feedback following your recent stay at our hotel. We hope that you enjoyed your stay and visiting your families. We have many opinions from outside and inside that some coffee put in the room. Right now, we only serve coffee in free lounge and breakfast time. Sometime soon we are planning to set some coffee in the room to make your hotel life better. Unfortunately, we do not have many restaurants around our hotel. But about five minutes’ walk there is shichijyo street rows of restaurants. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back again soon. Best regards, hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto

Stayed here for 3 nights, right off the bat it’s a lovely hotel. In a short, it’s a boutique minimalistic and quite brutalist-inspired style which will explain the usage of heavy dark tone and minimal lighting. The overall ambience is very dim and dark and lighted with spotlights along so in the beginning it gets a bit of use to to adjust to the surroundings.
Room wise it’s definitely on the smaller side, we picked the double queen bed and it was huge, literally filled the room from wall to wall but the remaining space is very limited. We needed to do some adjusting around just to accommodate our 3 luggages. So if you’re coming with a family, you either need to take multiple rooms or better off somewhere else.
Breakfast was lovely, you can chose either Japanese or continental western breakfast and it comes in a set meal. Delicious and no complain there.
Overall we had a great stay, bed a bit hard but it’s manageable and staffs were quite friendly and accommodating. Would definitely come again.

First, thank you so much to taking your time for this feedback. And also thank you for staying with us for 3nights. The concept of this hotel is to feel and experience the ‘deep’ of Kyoto. Guest Rooms may feel bit tight to foreigners unfortunately. But you can feel Japanese taste from your room. For breakfast, you can chose Japanese or continental western breakfast as you said. In Japanese breakfast we offer porridge which is made in ‘hachidaimegihei’ famous for white rice in Kyoto. We will be waiting for you again soon and welcome you more than this time. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. Best regards, hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto

The hotel has a zen minimalist look and is very dark. We went when the weather wasn't that great so maybe that's why the hotel felt a bit gloomy. We did like the onsen in the basement, and having access to a laundry machine was convenient. You check in on an ATM machine which didn't feel welcoming. There is staff nearby and they helped us and we were able to check in despite the language barrier. Other reviews had mentioned welcome drinks but we weren't offered any or given any information about them, so I guess you need to ask! The breakfast (extra charge) was filling and interesting. We got the western breakfast with eggs, ham, orange juice, a croissant, a salad and soup. This hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the train station and about a 25-30 minute walk to tourist areas. There weren't many restaurants nearby and other than at breakfast, the cafe part of the hotel didn't seem open when we were there. But there was a vending machine in the basement with drinks and beer. I would recommend splurging for a bigger room since the smaller ones are very small. I would rate this hotel 3.5 bubbles.

Thank you for using hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto. The concept of our hotel is a space that expresses the "light and shadow" inside a cave using lighting and a modern Japanese design. Although many parts may feel dark, I hope you will experience this extraordinary space. We apologize for the inconvenience caused as the staff forgot to provide you with a welcome drink. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Tou Nishinotoin in Kyoto for 6 nights. The hotel itself is very clean and modern. A bit dark for my liking, with very dim lights in the halls and even in the rooms, but I think that's the vibe it was going for. If you prefer things on the darker and quiet side, you'll like this hotel. The room itself- we booked the superior twin room- was also very, very small. It's probably our own fault for choosing that room but definitely was a struggle for 2 adults and all our luggages. There was only 1 small table to put stuff on. Bathroom was small as well, with the toilet and shower together. I did peek into one of the other rooms, with a queen sized bed, as they were cleaning, and it looked much more spacious and comfortable. So I would advise anyone traveling/staying with someone to opt for the bigger rooms... I guess you get what you paid for. Staff is very friendly and helpful with the check in process, lending umbrellas, and even shipping our luggages to the airport. They leave a bag of fresh towels, water, and essential supplies every morning in case you need it. There is a public bath/onsen as well as vending machines and washing machines in the basement level. They have breakfast available for an additional charge. It is a 10 minute walk from Kyoto Station if you get out from the right exit. Seems close, but definitely further than we would like with all the luggages we were carrying! It will definitely be a struggle getting there if you're carrying more than 1 luggage as the streets are very small to walk in. I would recommend staying here if you like a darker, quiet atmosphere.. but definitely opt for the bigger room options!

Thank you very much for using hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto. We would also like to thank you for your detailed and valuable comments. Our hotel has a concept, and we designed the space by using spot lighting to capture the "light and shadow" inside the cave. The lighting and design create a calming space. As the customer said, if you have large luggage, the superior twin room will feel very small. However, our hotel offers 11 types of rooms to suit the needs of various customers, so if you are staying for a long time, we recommend a room of a higher grade than Superior Twin. We have several rooms where you can relax and relax, so we hope you will be able to stay in the room of your choice. If you have a chance to come to Kyoto again, please come and visit hotel tou. This was a great find in Kyoto. Its in a quiet area - 10 minute walk to Kyoto main or Gojo stations. They have a variety of room types, but only the 17m2 rooms were available for our stay and they are tiny. When I say tiny, I mean no room for a suitcase tiny. There are 2 platform beds, a bathroom, and just enough space to walk from the bed to the bathroom to the door. Do yourself a favor and book the larger rooms. They looked great and downright spacious when we saw housekeeping cleaning them. The baths - wow. Leave your modesty at the door - you can't take anything into the bath with you - the written instructions provided at check-in clear up any questions you might have about how it works. Suffice it to say, its fantastic - especially after the many kilometers and thousands of stairs, its a great way to relax the sore feet and tired muscles. There's no variety at breakfast, we had the same set meal 5 days in a row, but its very good and the price couldn't be beat. Finally, the staff here are incredible - I've never stayed at a hotel where the staff (with their carts!) will exit an elevator to let a guest have it to themselves - but they do here. If staff were waiting for an elevator and a guest needed it - the guest got it and the staff waited. That exemplifies the staff here and they make you feel like royalty - from the front desk to housekeeping.

Thank you very much for using hotel tou nishinotoin kyoto. First of all, thank you for taking the time to comment on your experiences during your stay at the hotel. If you have a lot of luggage, the 17㎡ moderate type room will feel very small. If you don't have much luggage, we recommend this room as it is compact and easy to use. If you have a lot of luggage, we recommend staying in a larger room. We are sure that you will have a pleasant stay. We are happy to hear that you were very satisfied with the large public bath. It is highly recommended as it will soothe tired feet from traveling. We also appreciate that you were satisfied with our breakfast. If you have a chance, please come and have breakfast with us again. And lastly, we are very grateful for your kind compliments on our staff's hospitality. We value hospitality so that our customers can have a comfortable stay. We look forward to welcoming you again and feeling like royalty. Thank you for your lovely feedback. The overall atmosphere of the hotel was great and it was a very relaxing space. The rooms were just as they looked in the photos, so it was a very happy trip. The staff at the lobby were quick and polite. It was reasonably priced and great value for money if you were staying with two or more people, with reasonably priced access to Kyoto Station and convenience stores. The large public bath in the basement was also very clean and had a wide range of amenities, including not only shampoo and conditioner but also MUJI cosmetics, which I really liked. I would like to use it again if I have the opportunity!

I stayed in a deluxe twin room with breakfast for two days. It was just the right amount of space for two people, and the room had a lovely modern style that combined both Japanese and Western elements. It was hard to pass up the large communal bath, but the shower room in the room was made of glass, so I liked that I could watch the TV by opening the curtains. For breakfast, I could choose between Japanese and Western food, and both were very delicious. The space was based on black, so I was able to relax from start to finish. The amenities were plentiful, which was very helpful. There was also a bar in the evening, which I was able to enjoy to the fullest. I would like to use this room again when I come to Kyoto. Thank you for two wonderful days.

hotel tou nishinotoin's modern design exceeded our online impressions. Despite a small booking hiccup with the number of nights our keycards were programmed for, the staff diligently honored our intended stay. They were also very accommodating with language, translating to English where necessary.
The location is tucked away from the bustle and noise of Kyoto's main streets, but is still close enough to easily access Kyoto's transit options.
The breakfast options were both very tasty. The staff were at the ready to help us get seated, order drinks, and prepare our food.
uro, their public grand bath, was a very dark and calming rendition of a public bathhouse, with the "cave-like" design and quiet ambience.
The room we booked was very much to our liking. It was fitted with the necessary amenities, roomier than our previous hotel, and easy to relax in after busy days of traveling and plenty of stimulation.
Overall, the level of care and design were outstanding.

About a ten minute walk from the train station and convenient for a lot of dining options, this hotel was a good find for us. The room had a minimal feel with subdued colors (everywhere in the hotel) with a large platform bed and a decent sized bathroom. The western breakfast with a Japanese flair was generous, and there was coffee in the lobby. The staff was polite and professional. Check-in was "self-serve" on a computer, but one wonders why the hotel doesn't switch to a front desk given that most guests needed help. This would not be a good choice for anyone wanting to do telework as there is no desk in the room or anywhere in the lobby to work (or not seating except the bed in the room).
