We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights during our first visit to Kyoto. This hotel is very clean with nice accessories and modern Japanese accommodations located in quiet neighborhood away from constant tourist crowds but at the same time in walking distance from the emperor palace and right across from Nijo Castle. It is only 10-15 minutes away on taxi from Gion district and other main tourist attractions that Kyoto can offer. I also would like mention Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto staff that made us feel very welcomed and specifically to Timothy Hui (front office manager) who went beyond his duties and make special accommodations for us during our visit in Kyoto.

I was very excited to see whether this hotel could live up to some of the incredible reviews I've seen online. It did not only live up to it, but it exceeded it.
The service: - Incredibly attentive staff members from the moment we stepped foot onto the driveway. - A seasonal welcome drink and snack awaited us while we were kindly walked through the check-in procedures and breakfast options. - We got an in depth room tour, outlining all room features. - I celebrated my birthday during the stay and was surprised with a handwritten birthday card, a fully decorated bed and local sweets. - The dining room service during breakfast and dinner were second to none - everyone was attentive and kind and made every meal exceptional. - Front desk kindly helped us forward our luggage to our next destination.
The rooms: - Super-king mattress was wider than any bed I've seen before. - At our booking rate the minibar contents were complimentary, other than wine and champagne, and contained delicious smoothies, local beers and snacks. - The balcony was an oasis of zen, overlooking the courtyard garden and offering stunning views of Nijo-jo castle across the street.
The location: - Ideally located across the street from Nijo-jo castle. - Convenient underground stop 3 mins on foot away from the hotel.
The food: - One of our highlights of the entire Japan trip was the dinner included in the room rate. Multiple course tasting menu with exceptional seasonal dishes. - Fresh and delicious breakfast (both western and Japanese options) with some of the most delicious eggs I've ever had.
I cannot wait to stay here again and highly recommend it!

Beautiful hotel with excellent service. We stayed for 2 nights to relax in the middle of our 3 week trip over Japan. First day we just stayed in the hotel and enjoyed the views and the room. Room offers beautiful views on surrounding slopes, and it’s just very enjoyable to have a tea while admiring the view. We booked 2 external experiences with the hotel, the tea ceremony and zen meditation. Both were arranged and prepared we just had to show up. But that was not all, as a welcome gift, as hotel knew we are travelling with our 3yo boy, they surprised us with 3 tickets to Kyoto aquarium. Breakfast is nice and not crowded, staff is very attentive. Big thanks to Mr. Kinoschita who made our breakfast experience great. Accor benefits were taken in the account, as platinum members we got upgrade to Nijo Castle View room and we were offered cocktails for the Accor welcome drinks. Staff is helpful and attentive to the smallest detail. An example, the traditional pyjamas we got for our 3yo were too big. We didn’t say anything about it as we didn’t think it’s so important, but he was in the lobby in that pyjamas and was seen by the hotel staff. The next day after the room cleaning a one size smaller pyjamas were provided. Thank you very much.

This is a stylish, new, boutique hotel with impeccable customer service. Everyone who works in the hotel is friendly, welcoming, and helpful to guests. The room decor is magnificent, as they've thought of both modern and personal touches to make staying at Garry Nijo Castle Hotel very comfortable. The entire hotel and rooms are spotless. My husband and I stayed in a king sized, well-being suite for four nights to celebrate his birthday and our anniversary.
We love modern decor, and this hotel delivers. The rooms are beautifully designed and included things like bath salts, Nespresso machines, and tea pots. Breakfast was convenient each morning and tasty. Because the hotel is small, it only offers a few meal options for breakfast, but we still enjoyed it. The location is walkable, though it's slightly off the beaten path. Very quiet and peaceful yet just a few blocks down from retail and restaurants. It's a nice central place to stay for a visit to Kyoto. The restaurant Singular was nice to try (the plating was artistic), but there are equally good options within walking distance of the hotel.
We would certainly stay at this hotel again when we return to Kyoto and will recommend it to friends who also enjoy boutique properties and aren't concerned about amenities like swimming pools and fitness centers. Thank you to all of the kind hotel staff who made our stay truly exceptional.

Hotels in Kyoto are usually more expensive than equivalent hotels in Tokyo and Osaka. While the Garrya Nijo Castle is not a budget hotel, it represents an incredible value for what you get. Upon securing an entry level room with a balcony, I was told breakfasts were included in the cost of the stay. Two types of breakfasts - American style and Japanese style. While I am used to having courses for breakfast, the American breakfast started with fruit, breads and coffee with orange juice. Then the second course was eggs of your choice with meats. All servings were more generous than the usual fare. Dinner was also included in the room charge. This was an 8 course Japanese style meal that spanned an amuse bouche, then an appetizer all the way to a main dish and then dessert about four courses later. A meal in an outside restaurant would easily cost $100US per person. The minibar was complementary except for wines and whiskies. The lobby is beautiful and designed to convey a peaceful stress free environment. My balcony overlooked Nijo Castle and I enjoyed several cups of coffee there. I am more used to being nickel and dimed to death in a hotel, so it was refreshing to see a hotel offer so many amenities for a set price.

Absolutely stunning hotel with phenomenal staff and incredible restaurant. The hotel itself is centered around a gorgeous tree that really sets the stage for a stay in Kyoto. The photos are great but it’s all just so much more striking in person.
We had a huge room that had a lovely little patio overlooking a bamboo garden. After checking in we realized we really wanted another night added to our trip and thankfully the hotel was able to accommodate us.
Our package had dinner included, which was absolutely delicious and a great value - easily could have been a $500-600 meal. We also had breakfast included which was also delicious. We did both the Japanese and Wellness breakfasts and both were superb.
Really the what makes this hotel stand out is the staff. Every person was friendly and helpful. We hope we can stay again. Highly recommend booking here!

This hotel feels more like a ryokan than a hotel. It has a Zen like feel. The entry lobby area has a beautiful view of the moss garden and has very low light. Our room was spacious, modern and very comfortable. The staff is over the top accommodating and friendly, always making sure we were comfortable and satisfied with everything. We enjoyed our daily breakfast where they gave us a choice of a multi course American or Japanese breakfast. The meal was beautifully prepared and presented. We did not indulge in their dinner option. It was not something that interested us however another couple said they really enjoyed it.

I loved this hotel from the moment I stepped into the hotel entrance. Not only the lobby, but the interior design of the rooms was simply amazing. In particular, there was a table and sofa in the open space with a full glass window, so I was able to relax and enjoy the view of Nijo Castle. This time, I had a stay plan that included a free minibar, so I had alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, and snacks (oil sardines and olives), and the selection was all very carefully selected.
