Can't believe this a hostel! Had the sophisticated design detail of a classy hotel, embracing traditional Japanese architecture (from use of main area tatami mat to a genius open-aired bathroom enclave with a rock fountain for hand washing) perfectly merged with all the modern comforts. Shared rooms are equip with thoughtfully-fabricated, curtained bunkbeds that allow complete escape and privacy. Cheap... More

We spend 2 nights there. Charming place with very narrow stairs (may become death trap if you are drunk so better stay sober as we did) . Good location, nice service, clean room and price was reasonable. 5/5 - would accommodate at Guest House Itoya again. Recommended!

It's very clean and comfortable, I had a good sleep here. I'm especially fond of this neighborhood, there are many different traditional shops around, and amazing bakeries! I had tried several bakeries on the street next to this guesthouse, they all served delicious bread and I really envied people who live there. There are several bathhouses in the neighborhood, and... This was a lovely guesthouse where we shared a room with four other ladies. We were encouraged to use the nearby sento public baths but there was a lovely shower available. I am really sorry that I didn't use the sento but we were on whistle stop tour. The staff speak really good English and the other guests were multi-national.... More

The guesthouse is located in a residential neighbourhood, the location is good, the neighbourhood is residential and quite. You can walk to many touristy places or take the bus, bus stop is just in front. The owners are nice and helpful, she recommended me to go to the public bath and it was great. There are some good restaurants and... More

It was very nice for a girl traveling alone, because I made some new friends there ! We went to Sento ( japanese style bath house ) which near by Guest House Itoya together, very special experience. And the friendly staffs can speak English and Chinese so it had no problem for communication for me. I will recommend my friends... More

Clean, great service, nice bunk beds, old authentic feel. They provide umbrellas when it's rainy and provide good advice on where to go, maps, etc. A good option but downtown would be the best location.

A beautiful home, with a lovely little zen garden, and cosy common room. Our room was small but clean and it did the job. Staircase was VERY steep though. But lovely owner and we very much enjoyed our stay here.

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighbourhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
