My husband and I are Americans living in Japan most of the year, so we are used to Japanese inns. After an uncomfortable night in a "modern" hotel near the train station, we so enjoyed our three nights here. Our hosts, Yuhara-san and her son, were warm and always willing to help out. We learned that this traditional Japanese inn...

We stayed at Yuhara with my wife for the our first night in Japan. I wish we had stayed longer, as the hosts at Yuhara were so warm and welcoming. Yuhara is located at a very nice and peaceful area with no noises bothering at night - something we came to value when we stayed at a more centrally located...

We stayed there 3 nights with my wife and my small child. The ryokan is well located in Kyoto in the center of the city, however near a small canal full of mosquitos. The owner and his mother are very kind and helpfull, but do not speak a very good english. The ryokan provides a computer with free internet, but...

I did hesitate whether to choose Yuhara after having read about the bugs.. and even had booked another accomodation in Kyoto first. How good that I changed to this one! It was a lovely, only 2 nights stay. The place is very conveniently located, 15 min. walk from Kyoto station in a lovely small street by a channel. Very easy...

Mrs Yuhara and her son run a wonderfully warm and welcoming establishment. The whole place has been recently refurbished to impeccable standard and it was the best-value-for-money accommodation we had in Japan. In a lovely quiet neighbourhood too, yet very close and easy access to top sights. The Bamboo room is especially lovely so ask for it if you can....

Me and my friend stayed at the Yuhara Ryokan in may last year. We wanted to stay somewhere very Japanese and Yuhara were cheap and well located. A bit hard to find first but there is no problems to get help on the way. Even if you don´t speak Japanese. An elderly gentleman drowe us a map:) The room was...

The Yuhara Ryokan seemed like a great place. Issues like curfew and times to get out were not a problem because we just needed a place to spend the night. We wanted a Japanese experience and the Yuhara is very picturesque. Mrs. Yuhara and her son are INCREDIBLY nice. Very helpful and they were flexible with the curfew. We had...

It's not a bad ryokan, but just be prepared that it's like going back in time and staying in a boarding school. Mrs Yuhara and her son are really friendly and helpful and provided us with very handy and detailed information, but I would not stay here again. First of all, the place is really hard to find because no...

I did not have the chance to stay at this wonderfully reviewed ryokan. Unfortunately, because of a mis-communicated email address, my reservation, which I was assured repeatedly would be held for 1 day, was given away by the hotel managers within one hour of realizing the misspelled email address. It was very disappointing. I highly recommend FAXING your request in...

Mrs. Yuhara and her son were so pleasant and delightful. We had a great stay and the location was perfect. It was easy to get to/from the train station, Gion Corner, and the main part of the city. The ryokan is within walking distance to many temples and eateries. Kawa, a restaurant next door, served good food at a very...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
