This is the third time I stayed at Nikko Princess Kyoto. The location is amazing and the staff is attentive. And the bar is great. The woman bartender makes incredible cocktails! However, this time I have one minor complaint regarding the check in process. My family and I were scheduled to stay for four nights altogether with one night away...

Definitely the low point of our three week Japan trip The hotel feels tired and the decor stuck in the 80s. We expected more from a Nikko hotel. Definitely geared toward domestic travelers, as few of the staff spoke enough conversational English to be helpful in most matters. Their restaurant recommendation was abysmal and our one in-hotel meal was terrible....

Stayed here two nights as part of a group tour. On entering the original allocated room (808) it stank very strongly of cigarettes so I went back to front desk for a replacement. Was then allocated 1007 which was a very well sized twin room on a corner with duel aspect windows. Large bathroom with separate wet room including bath...

Pleasant hotel, but expensive food in restaurant and bar. Breakfast very busy with the cooked food cold 20 minute walk from the centre of Kyoto but also has lots of shops round the corner We had a bar meal as stuck for time one night which was horrendously expensive and they allow smoking so quite smelly.

The hotel is very well located; not to far from JR station but in a very quiet street. The rooms are good sized with excellent beds. Leave the hotel turn to the left and you can walk along the stream and in the old town. But you are also very close to the shopping area where you have no trouble...

Good sized rooms, helpful staff, well located hotel. Would recommend for stays in Kyoto. Rooms well equipped with lovely large bathroom. A big hotel but with all the charm of a smaller boutique Japanese hotel.

Very friendly and helpful staff in the lobby and at reception. Seemed very keen to please. Our room was very large and the western beds soft and comfortable. The hotel is located in a quiet street within easy walking distance of the markets and main shopping area. Many convenience stores and restaurants close by. It felt safe walking in the...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
