This place was okay to find... about 15 min walk from the train station in one direction. It is generally in a good location, quiet but not perfect. For example, the main area to go out at night is around Gion and you have to walk about 5 mins to a subway, get a subway 1 stop, change subways and...

The Inn is less than 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. We stayed in a Western room and found the room to be a good size and very clean. The bathroom was bit small but you also had a little kitchen in the room and a fridge so you had everything you needed. The place looked very traditional and we...

If you get the chance, stay in one of the traditional Japanese rooms. Each room comes with its private toilet and sink. The shared shower (between 2 rooms) is extremely clean and well maintained. The staff are polite, friendly and extremely helpful. Try some yuba and eel at the Izakaya down the street called Kura Kura. Tell the chef that...

I really enjoyed my stay at Matsubaya Inn. It was a little difficult to find at the start (because maps in Japan rarely come with a scale) but it gets easier once you're more familiar with the area. The location isn't the most convenient (especially if your feet are aching at the end of the day) but if you're on...

The service was friendly and efficient. We had no problems calling to secure our reservation. They also let us check in early. Breakfast was good - Western and Japanese breakfast available (need to reserve for the latter). Our room was clean and sleep quality was pretty good. The walls were a bit thin (for two nights, we heard our next...

We used this hotel, even got our family to come from Tokyo, because it was mentioned in the Lonely planet. Surely they mean well. But this Ryokan is not what one expects. The room, we had western rooms are ok. Nothing fancy, clean, but small. AND the tower were terrible. Small and old, not able to dry my body after...

Stayed with my sister, mum and 3 yr old son, two in each room. Fabulous rooms, especially garden room on ground floor. Needed the heating as was rather cold on entering, but otherwise was wonderful. Even had kimonos to wear in our rooms, even little one for my son which was such fun. Very complicated rules for footwear on different...

Just stayed here for 2 nights. Loved it. The hosts were lovely and always there to help. I liked the traditional feel of the ryokan. Stayed in a Japanese room which was really comfortable. Extremely clean and the Japanese breakfast was excellent. I will return-:)

Having only stayed in hotels and apartments this was indeed an amazing experience. The Inn was spotless and clean and the hosts could not do enough to make us feel welcome. The rooms were all detailed with authentic artwork with some having small courtyard gardens to the side. If you find yourself in Kyoto and would like an incredible japanese...

the hosts could not have been more friendly and helpful. we liked the way they intoduced you to the appropriate customs when staying in a ryokan and ensured that every query was addressed. the room was smallish but adequate and very clean as was the bathroom. The position was great, being near the station and bus stops. The staff sell...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
