The stay was wonderful. People are very nice and the house is fantastic (japanese traditionnal style). There is a nice little japanese garden. All this for a resonnable price. If I go back to Tokyo, I am sure I will go back to this ryokan. Nice situation (lot of bus lines passing at less than 3 min walking from the...

Four of us stayed at this lovely Ryokan during our visit to Kyoto. We had at our disposal an entire wing which made our stay even more pleasant. Plenty of room, and various sliding doors gave us more intimacy and privacy. A few little cupboards and coffee table made it almost perfect. The owner (Katsunore Urade spelling?) bought the tickets...

We spent 3 nights at this ryokan, it is charming, very clean, comfortable and the manager is very helpful. It has also a coin washing machine, very convenient. One of the best choice during this month in Japan, the only concern is the location, it's not in the center, but the bus is direct to the center, and frequent. And...

Nice place with an awesome manager (really nice person) very helpful and easygoing. Clean tatami rooms with futons. Shared bathrooms. Shower and Japanese bathtub. Microwave and fridge so you can have some meals "at home". Not in the city center but easy access with a bus stop one block away. You can even but the one day bus pass in...

Nice, traditional ryokan in a quiet area. We stayed here for 4 nights and we have been accomodated in a nice and very, very spacious room overlooking the garden. Thank to the heated futon, we had a really pleasent comfort. Katsunori, the person who takes care of ryokan, is professional and very helpful and speaks a very good english. Good...

We stayed 4 nights here in Nov 2013. Recommended for those (esp couples) who wish to experience traditional ryokan stay with moderate budget. Very clean room, comfortable futon, no curfew, free wifi in room, nice people, cheap laundry (self-service coin machine) and it serves as a good place to explore Kyoto, with nearby bus stop serving Kyoto city bus as...

From the minute we got there we were greeted and basically taken care of. The weather was good. This place was very clean and had a homey feel to it and great location. We had turn down service in our room everynight also. We would definitely stay here again.

This is not a ryokan, but a budget minshuku. We liked it, and would glady return. We booked for the second floor, but when the staff saw that my wife had a minor disability, they offered to change us to the ground floor. This was well done. She declined, because with a bathroom and two toilets down there, she wanted...

If you're looking for a more authentic Japanese style place to stay than a generic hotel in Kyoto, look no further. Although a little out of town, this little Rakucho is lovingly kept with it's quaint bamboo mat flooring and futon beds. The location is actually pretty good once you figure out the Kyoto bus system as there's a stop...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
