I really enjoyed my stay at Ryokan Watazen. It gave you both the traditional ryokan experience with the hotel comfort. The rooms are traditional ryokan style with sliding doors, bamboo floors, matts set on the ground for sleeping. But, it still has an hotel feel with elevators and hallways and no curfews. I read at more traditional ryokans, there are... More

Staying at Watazen Ryokan was a great experience. The staff were very responsive and attentive. The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious. The location was very convenient, 3 mins walk to the Nishiki market, a century old paper shop was next door, a shopping centre was only 5 mins walk away and Lawson was just around the corner. Would definitely... More

quite simple ryokan with good service. staff are very smiley and helpful. had dinners and breakfast while there. Food is not exceptional and would suggest to try the many other restaurants nearby. it's a stone throw away from nishiki market and shi jio shopping street - which means it's well located.

We stayed for just 2 nights but managed to cover a lot of experiences due to the great location, just a couple of minutes by foot from the famous Nishiki covered market - where you can browse and buy from a fabulous array of unique foods and objects. We hired bikes from the ryokan to cycle to the temples (kinkakuji,... More

The Ryokan might not exactly be what you imagined as it is Nestled among many similar modern looking building down a one eay street. The staff were very friendly and especially the older lady and gentlemen were extremely kind and helpful. We had a room for 5 people which when the futons were all made up, didn't leave much room... Watazen offers great rates for a Ryokan, is very conveniently located, with a kind service, clean large rooms, and nice sento in the basement. Comfort is standard for a Ryokan. Be aware that if you plan to have Kaseiki dinner or Japanese style breakfast (which I recommend) there, you need to notify them AT LEAST one day early, and default... More

Extremely nice, tea service first thing, pretty good with direction and English, simple but free breakfast. They have a public bath in the basement and provide a robe and 'supplies bag'. The bath was very quite when I went visited. The location is fantastic. There is food close by, bus stop not far, an English pub across the street and... More

We chose this ryokan because it was more affordable and we planned only one night. Unfortunately I found the mats and the pillows too hard for my liking, just warning others who are 5 and a half months pregnant and traveling to Kyoto! The mats were hard and the pillow was flat and about as comfy as those flimsy pillows... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
