The Nishiyama Ryokan like other ryokans is a tradituonal japanese hosting house Staff is very friendly though the english skills are unfortunately often limited like elsewhere in Japan. The traditional japanese breakfast is good and a must if you're there. The rooms are in japanese style (tatami, futon....). The bathroom is very limited (max. 2-3 m2) for westerners habits. So...

I stayed at this ryokan for one night with my boyfriend. Our Japanese style room was beautiful and the day after we also had the chance to try a delicious traditional breakfast. We could also see a simplified version of the Japanese tea ceremony with a lovely lady who was the owner of the ryokan. Just one remark: if you...

We stayed 2 nights and it was a very nice experience. The room was comfortable with all the japanise atmosphere. The breakfast was amazing and a great japanise. It has public bathrooms which are a plus to relax after and before sightseeing. It's good located, near commercial, transport and restaurant area. The only comments we have are: the private bathroom...

Rather than staying in a soulless hotel, you should definitely consider a ryokan for a proper Japanese experience. This one is mid priced and was fantastic. The room was perfect - nothing fancy but clean and well equipped. The hot baths were excellent - a great experience. We didn't have breakfast but did take part in the daily tea ceremony...

I booked this ryokan based on excellent reviews, although it was more expensive than the others we booked in other cities. Hence my slight disappointment. Probably a poor command of English created some service issue on day 1. The onsen is also pretty basic with no cold bath and no amenities at all on the lockers room. On a positive...

Slightly rude staff. Didnt allow me to leave my luggage througout the day. I asked to speak to the manager and was just laughed at. After asking numerous times to speak to the manager I was told I could leave my luggage till 6pm but no later then this. .very basic accomadation for the price, tiny shower which one cannot...

Opted for a traditional Japanese style room for 3 nights. Ryokan is well maintained and in a good location. The staff go out of their way to accommodate guests and made your stay very enjoyable. There are daily activities (free) such as tea ceremonies and sake tastings in the lobby. The onsen is a bonus, especially after a long day...

This is a nice little ryokan in good location, only a walk away from the subway and a couple popular sights. They have Japanese style rooms and western style rooms. We opted for the Japanese room for two. It was rather small (not necessarily a problem) and could have used a bit of updating. The futon beds were really comfortable...

This is a typical Japanese Guest house, so, if you are in Kyoto and want to experience living like a true Japanese this is a right place! You will sleep on tatami and wear traditional clothes provided in the Guest house. Every morning there is a tea ceremony and you can participate! I think this is a place not to...

This is a wonderful ryokan, the service is just amazing and above (wonderful) Japan service culture. All staff goes to great lengths to be sure I was happy, comfortable, helped and super relaxed. The onsen is amazing and having at least a night in the traditional futon bed is a must :-)

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
