I've stayed at the Westin Miyako for work-related travel three times, and have been well-satisfied with my overall experience. The hotel is nestled into a tree-covered hillside, with a short nature trail immediately behind it, so the setting and the hotel itself are very quiet. The trail offers a peaceful place for a walk if you need a quick break,...

we stayed in a ryokan, the traditional japanese style housing at the westin. it was great, you leave the main building of the westin and walk out to the back, and there are many units along the path. what's great is that in the morning, you can hear birds, it's so serene and peaceful, that i was so relaxed my...

I stay at SPG hotels a lot. This one has a unique setting, in the outskirts of the ancient capital of Japan, Kyoto. It appears to own a hill/mountain behind it. So their is a mountain trail of a couple of kilometers right from the hotel (from the 7th floor). The breakfast spread is quite impressive, although understandably heavy in...

We stayed at the Westin for 5 nights in the hottest month of the year, August. Kyoto was amazing with all of the wonderful temples and sights and food! What made this trip extra special was how excellent the stay was at the Westin hotel. I cannot give one single complaint about this hotel, and if you’ve read any of...

I am a Platinum SPG member and have stayed at quite a lot of Westin Hotels. This one is not up to scratch. First up, no Wi-fi at all in your room. You have to go to the Lobby or, if you are lucky enough, the Executive Lounge for this. If you are traveling with an iPad or smart phone...

I recently spent 2 nights in the Westin Miyako and overall was quite pleased. The location is great (literally around the corner from a subway stop, and walking distance to several significant sights) and the lobby is gorgeous. Our room and bathroom were clean and quietly stylish. The staff speaks nearly-impeccable English, and went out of their way to be...

We stayed at The Westin Miyako for five days, and we liked it a lot. It has a great location, nice views over the city, a peaceful atmosphere, and good service. It is not exciting or special, but efficient, clean, friendly - and not to far from the city. The rooms were huge - and nice to be in. I...

I have stayed in a few Westin around the globe and this one needs some TLC. I always have an image of superior quality, but was let down here. No WiFi in the rooms and the business centre was not accessible all hours. The rooms were clean and OK, but looking old and tired. Warning.... we ate at the Teppanyaki...

Room was large and bright. Fantastic buffet breakfast was included in our room (but maybe not all). Free swimming pool which was unusual in Japan. Free shuttle ever 30 minutes to the Kyoto subway station, with 2 other stops at shopping areas. Great location for walks.

I stayed here for a conference and the experience was not too bad. This is a hotel with history so the rooms are pretty small and the renovation is needed. If you fancy modern hotels, Granvia is a better choice. This Westin does not have the signature “Heavenly Bed” or comfortable pillows. However, the service is pretty okay (especially the...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
