My third ryokan stay in Japan and I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a ryokan experience. The staff could speak decent English - which is a relief from tongue-straining conversations the entire day, and were always thoughtful. The room was very clean, spacious and authentic. The ensuite bathroom was excellent, although in winter can get a...

Clean, friendly, convenient, quiet, reasonably priced, and an outstanding Japanese breakfast served. The 12am curfew keeps things quiet, but night owls should look elsewhere!

We had a great time in Ryokan Shimizu The location is very good, near the Kyoto station. You can visit Tokyo walking from the ryokan, taking the bus or take a train to visit city near Kyoto. The team was very kind and helpful. They take time to answer to all our questions about Kyoto. They recommend us goods restaurants! The...

Great Ryokan. Staff are very friendly. We rented bikes from the Ryokan and it was a great way to see the city. Staff brought cold tea to our room each day after we came back from sightseeing. Ryokan is in a good location for seeing the sites. There are 5 or 6 really good restaurants nearby (5-10 minute walk) just...

This was by far my favourite place we stayed in whilst travelling in Japan. Beautiful building but a bit difficult to find - it's hidden away up a side street. We found the map provided on the website wasn't really very helpful! The staff here were really helpful, let us leave our bags when we arrived early, and we returned...

We arrived at Ryokan Shimizu after a very long journey and very bad rain. When we arrived we were informed that we could not check into the room until 4pm (it was 1pm). No drink of any type was offered and we left are bags and then had to leave. The room whilst clean, is very basic. The walls are...

The high point of my lodging in Japan. The room could not have been more beautiful, with the traditional tatami and the futons. We could not stop smiling. The en suite bath is not traditional, true, but very much appreciated, as was the top-rate soap and shampoo. The staff was generally friendly and helpful -- we were impressed with the...

This Ryokan is THE place to stay to fully experience the japanese lodging way. Very well located, just 5 minutes walking distance to Kyoto Central Station, surrounded by restaurants, combini shops and in a quiet neighborhood, makes this place just perfect for a short or long stay. All personnel (specially Yoko) is very helpful, speak good english and care for...

Was our first time in Japan and in one ryokan. Simply perfect! All new, clean and the staff always ready to help us (and serve us green tea and orange juice once we come back in the night). The private room is so good, big closet to store luggage and very nice futon. Thank you and I reccomend for everybody...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
