Great location. Easy walk to Nishiki Market and surrounding restaurants. Close to bus and subway stops. BUT as any hotel with many rooms, it can also be tour group hubs. Not really a big problem except when we tried to have breakfast at the hotel twice. The first time was a long wait so we abandoned ship. The second time...

I took this trip to Kyoto to help a lifelong friend fulfil an item on her bucket list, which was to witness the beautiful cherry blossoms in Japan. I was in charge of booking our hotel and the reviews on TripAdvisor helped me decide on The Hotel Monterey Kyoto. There were three of us girls on the trip and the...

This hotel is in a good location, handy to subway station (Karasuma Oike station) and to restaurants/night life. It isn't a really modern/contemporary hotel, but more of a classic/Art Deco look and feel. The buffet breakfast is good, and the staff were very pleasant and welcoming. The rooms are a little more compact than some of the others I stayed...

Recommended by my husband who had stayed at this hotel before. This time we both stayed st this hotel for 2 nights in April. Location is superb. Close to all shops and Rokkaku do. Starbucks, Family Mary, Fresco, Maeda coffee, Dean and Deluca all around the corner. Rooms are spacious by Japanese standard. We had a twin room for 2...

Wonderful experience! Very nice accommodations and wonderfully nice staff. The bar and restaurant were a bit pricey though. Otherwise very satisfied and the best hotel of our trip to Japan. Huge bed by Japan and American standards. Free upgrade and a free early check in.

we stayed in double room facing the street .Rooms were so compact hardly any space to open up 2 suitcases.. pillows were hard for a hotel of that standard. .Though close to subway exit 6 we had to carry our suitcases up the steps since that exit did not have an escalator or elevator

The location is great. Close to the subway and walking distance to the center. The room was a bit old, with good size (we took standard twin). I will suggest the management to at leadt change the carpets... It is good value for money.

This is the second time we've stayed in this hotel. We had their queen double room. The room was bigger than a twin double room. The bed has a width of about 3 single beds (very wide!). The room was comfortable and the amenities were complete. They even had pajamas for the guests to wear. Bathroom was very clean. Convenience...

My wife and I stayed here 5-nights for a site-seeing holiday. The room was very comfortable and well maintained and had a reasonably sized bathroom en-suite with a bathtub-cum-shower and generous amenities. Wifi was free and excellent as one would expect in Japan. An in-room safe would have been a nice addition but that did not bother us, nor did the...

The location is good for exploring the city and for getting to the subway and therefore to the KYoto train station. The rooms are not large but good. Beds are comfortable and rooms are quiet. The bathroom as with most hotels in this city are small. No fancy toiletries. The concierge was helpful. The spa was definitely worth going to....

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
