Had a 2 night stay here last week, Beautiful Japanese cypress building which was built for the uncle of the Emperor. Make no mistake this is a very expensive room at almost $600au per night plus meals. The bathroom facilities are shared with other guests and futons are the only beds. Paper thin sliding screens for door which forces you...

Our best and finest stay at a Ryokan. we absolutely loved it and also enjoyed the tasty Kaiseki. The staff was amazing and we were treated like royals :) Thank you for the incredible stay. Can't wait to come back .

Accommodations are traditional but perhaps could be updated. We stayed in the hanare, which is a separate building from the main house. The food was terrific and the people were wonderful. You are made to feel like either visiting family or royalty. The Japanese gardens are beautiful. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet. The property itself is serene.

We had a lovely stay in Yoshida-Sanso for two nights in late March. We had one night in the main house and another in the Hanare (the private cottage) which was great. The grounds are well maintained and a pleasure to be in. The staff were fantastic - very attentive and helpful. The food was delicious! This is a very...

For those who are considering staying at Yoshida Sanso, we feel that the food in their restaurant is absolutely delicious. We only ate lunch there as part of a tour. Yoshida Sanso was built as a summer house for the imperial family, and when we were greeted at the door by the hostess, we could see the imperial chrysanthemum flower...

Ryokan Yoshida Sanso is a beautiful property in the north east of Kyoto. Built by a member of the Japanese Royal Family in the 1930s it combines the best of Japanese traditions and European styling. The rooms are large and all amenities of the highest quality. Breakfast and dinner was served in different rooms each time. This provided a lovely...

Fantastic stay in the garden cottage which costs a small fortune but it is an extremely peaceful and beautiful experience in a harmonious zen environment awakened by bird sound and the sun entering across the mountains in a garden full of cherry blossom, lanterns, bonsai, flat stones and a nice traditional Japanese breakfast!

We stayed at the Yoshida-Sanso for one night after spending 3 nights at the Westin in Kyoto. Obviously a very different experience from a Western hotel, but very happy we did it and highly recommend to others. We arrived in the evening around 6pm and immediately went to enjoy our multi-course dinner that was included in the price of our...

My wife and I stayed here for a few days, and can honestly say that this iis one of the memories i will cherish for a very long time. The hospitality of the staff, the owners was awesome. Yoshida Sanso perfectly summarises Japan, their customer satisfaction. The place itself is steeped in History, with the staff and owners dressing in...

Was looking for a ryokan stay in Kyoto and after lots of research came across Yoshida-sanso. We wanted a more traditional experience away from the craziness of downtown Kyoto. Yoshida-sanso was the perfect fit. The house and grounds were beautiful and comfortable while still retaining the authentic feel. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
