Stayed for 4 nights, room might be a tad tight for 3 of us but it sufficed. Clean rooms although they would open the windows after cleaning, making the room a little dusty with some insects. Reception being a couple minutes walk away is a small inconvenience. Anyone complaining should be aware of the price you're paying. Perfectly happy with...

We stayed at Ekoi-no-ie's annex which is a self contained one bedroom apartment with a kitchenette. This is the 2nd time we stayed there when we visited Kyoto. Although the room was not particularly impressive, but it had all the essentials, including wi-fi connection (which was very convenient). The area is very quiet and independent. We just loved the location...

The room and bathroom are clean but somehow when we enter, the tatami in entry area got some wet. The living/public area is kind dirty which need more maintenance. The staff are helpful but not that kind. They have bike rental service but DON'T rent there, although the rate is cheaper but the bike condition is horrible. The only spark...

We booked this guest house due to the good review of its sister hotel. However, it's pretty disappointed. Before we entered the guest house,it already smelled bad. Our room is on the first floor right beside the kitchen. Although it felt like we could totally use the kitchen as our own space but due to the bad smell I don't...

I found Ikoi-no-ie a good and clean guesthouse, but nothing special either. No real highs or lows to report. What attracted me primarily that they do nice last-day offers on private rooms for single travelers, thereby avoiding paying high rates or having to sleep in a dorm (now too old for that!). The rooms are traditional Japanese style, and are...

Ikoi-no-ie is a good choice for people not wishing to spend a fortune in Kyoto. It's conveniently located (easy 10minute walk from the Kyoto Station, good access to other public transport like buses and subway). However, you're not right in the centre like downtown or Gion. There is also a convenience store nearby, (7/11) with an ATM that services foreign...

Nice staff who gave us accurate information on hotel rules and facilities. We liked the fact that we could take maps and/or borrow pamphlets on the main Kyoto events (as well as Nara/Kansai and further areas). The reception was closed during the night (from 10 pm till 8 am) but we had our room keys, so we could come back...

Really nice, be prepared to sleep on the floor with rice pillows but nice and comfy! Good location off the main road in the quiet backstreets. Really helpful staff who speak english really well! Bit of a walk from the JR station but close to the subway. Would stay again.

This is a very nice little ryokan-style hotel, more like a guest house than anything else. The staff all wear kimono and speak very good English. They organize fun events and have a LOT of information about Kyoto restaurants, transportation, festivals, etc. Our room was very comfortable (although a little small), and we had free access to internet, shower and...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
