We decided that we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese guesthouse and selected the Rikiya ryokan using the Japanese Guest Houses website -> http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/index.htm The Rikiya ryokan is a charming guesthouse run by some lovely elderly Japanese ladies, who, whilst not great at speaking English, were very warm and accommodating. “Book for a room with private bathroom. It is better to start your tour or site visits those around the hotel so as to maximize your stay in Kyoto.”

“the ryokan is facing the sunset but there's big hill where the kodaiji temple is will block the sun so your room is not hot in the evening.choosing the high floor might help you to stay at night due to the nature of a wooden flooring ryokan.but you'll have to carry your bag up the stairs.its just a 2 storey building.”
