The Hotel Solar do Imperio is projected to seduce and enchant any observer. The atmosphere is created by two historic mansions that date from 1875 and 1893, both buildings are designated by IPHAN as historical and cultural heritage sites and were restored to convert them to a sophisticated hotel with high quality standard. The architectural beauty of these small palaces and the quality of the hotel services tune in with other monuments of the imperial city.

Marcos offered wonderful, well informed, kind service at a memorable breakfast! His English is excellent, and he was very helpful in helping us plan our day visit to his fine city. The buffet is marvelous with beautifully prepared offerings. The chef is serious, and it shows.

This is a true palace, built for and occupied by a royal princess, a daughter of Dom Pedro. It is all white and lies within a gated garden with a fish pond in front. We slept in the princess's bedroom, a large high-ceilinged corner room on the main floor. I did wonder where the princess kept her gowns. The closet was one 6 foot rack with exactly five hangars. The bath was small but adequate.
Service throughout the facility was outstanding, helpful and friendly. I was amused, however, at the level of informality of manner and dress in such a formerly aristocratic environment. All the staff, from the reception to the waiter to the porter and gatekeeper were dressed in well-worn baggy pants and old sweaters. Granted, this is irrelevant to the service provided, but having come from Rio's well-starched Copacabana Palace, I was surprised.
All the public rooms have large windows that open to the outside with natural light everywhere.
The dining room is charming in its decor. All the walls have painted murals of animals performing human tasks. There is an anteater in a tree pouring tea to a bird flying by with a cup in its beak.
The food is excellent and nicely presented. Service, again, is quick, attentive and informal.
Even with all these highest quality attributes, the most valuable to me, as a tourist, was the prime location of the palace. It lies at the head of the long channeled avenue where all the nobility and wealthiest aristocrats built their own palaces, all of which are still there. Now most are institutions; three hotels, a bank, a museum, the city hall and are well maintained. A great circuit walk, if somewhat long, is to walk down to the main church, a beautiful old Gothic spired edifice, then over to the Royal Palace for their tour, a very nice simple lunch at the cafe on the Palace grounds, then continuing back to the hotel via the shopping area.
Other walks will take you to the Bohemia beer museum and cafe with the Crystal Palace nearby, and to the interesting and quirky hill-side home of Santos Dumont, Brazil's pioneer flyer contemporary with the Wright brothers.

Big expectations followed by disappointment. Staff are kind, friendly and helpful. Restaurant serves good food. However the hotel needs urgent refurbishment and redecoration: wear and tear everywhere. Tiny uncomfortable bathrooms, minimal closet space. Cleanliness?- very unsatisfactory. Wooden floors need urgent replacement. Corridor floor outside the suite - uneven. Restaurant’s ceiling “Stuck” decoration is based on “Swastika” patterns (Nazi Cross)- what bothered me asa descendant of holocaust survivors.

Tons of character and the main building is lovely. I don't know what the rooms are like in the main building, but if you stay in the annex I would think twice. The hotel is on an extremely busy road with constantly beeping and revving motorcycles. As the hotel is historic, that means it has single pane windows and a single wood shutter which do nothing to keep out the noise. It's like sleeping in the pit at Nascar. The rooms themselves are oddly bare. A bed, two lamps and a couple tables and that's about it.

I've Stayed here over the years and have noticed they are starting to go beyond their established price point. It's a beautiful classic hotel that is missing many modern basic conveniences including WiFi, dependable pluming and a very outdated health club that which has two residential tried mills. Lower your rates or make some big upgrades...

Dear Sir , fully appreciate your kind comments on our service and value. Although we are ranked in trip advisor and other websites as the top hotel in the centre of Petrópolis , our prices are kept in average of other hotels of same location. However , there are obvious improvements to be made .We also take good care to have a fair price - so , thanks again for your comments. Regarding the wifi , we do have wifi available in all facilities and rooms - for sure we did communicate to you badly about this service which , in fact , is a courtesy of the hotel - not charged to your room as in other hotels. Kind regards and thank you so much. Appreciate honestly you kind comments. jane assis

Petropolis is well worth a day trip; lovely area around Imperial Museu.
NOTE: Don't go on a Monday; most everything is closed. The hotel's breakfast we excellent and the staff is there to please.
For a cold beer with the locals, go the the beer gardern just out the west side of the hotel...you don't want a room on the street side..lots of street noise.
We liked Luigis Italian restaurant just a block from the hotel.
We drove from the airport to the area with no issues..the hotel is a little hard to find so get a good map as soon as you see a tourist info office.
All the attractions are well marked in English.
Zero tourist shopping. One full day is enough to see everything.

Old private house converted into small hotel, very much faded in respect of fixtures, furnishings and decor (for example our blackout window curtains were ripped and torn).

Virtually no space in our room to open a suitcase, and bathroom is open to the outside at all times so you need to watch out for mosquitoes.

Former guests hair still present on the wall of our shower did not inspire confidence in their cleanliness.

We had dinner in the dining room and while the salad starter was good the main course was inedible. It was advertised as Chicken breast on a rosti with sage sauce and Brie cheese.

When it came it was a massive pile of almost raw shredded potato, topped with a chicken breast over cooked until leathery, smothered in a gloopy green custard with the promised melted Brie all over it. It looked dreadful and tasted as it looked.

No gluten free bread or other food which was unusual in our experience of 6 hotels in Brazil.

If you want to visit Petropolis for the history, the guide books say this is one of the best hotels, maybe it is, but don’t go to stay there as a destination hotel as you will be disappointed.

Dear Sir , thanks so much for your kindness to share with us your impressions of our service. We are sorry for the cleaning procedure failure inf the shower box and for the execution of our Chicken breast with rostie of our menu. In name of chef Bertrand Martene we apologyze for that - chef Bertrand usually talks to the clients during the service , not only to answer any question but specially to check if flavour and execution was ok. We are sorry , he was not at the kitchen at this date. We customize very frequently the service to our guests - we should also have asked to you if any dietary restriction would be necessary. It has been very frequent the request of glutenfree ingredients - usually we purchase fresh products as per each client request . We also could have been done better if we had raised the question to you previously about any restriction to gluten.Sorry about that. We are very proud to be recommended as on of the best hotels in Petropolis and strongly desire to keep this reference due to our services. For this reason , we again thanks you for your comments - for sure will be taken into action and adjusted immediately . Would be very happy if in a future visit to Petropolis you would demonstrate confidence on us to be hosted at Solar do Império again. kind regards jane assis

Fantastic one night stay at this hotel. Rooms were large with high ceilings, bed was king size and very comfortable. Grounds were very nice and the service was great. Breakfast in bed is included in the price and they will bring whatever you want. Fantastic. Wifi in the rooms very good. Location is in centre and close to the Bohemia Factory experience.

Very smart building but in so far as the fairly expensive restaurant is concerned the food was average and came cold, twice, after asking them to heat it up, and the service was slow and quite frankly lazy. The atmosphere is also dead, it was like walking into a library. If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat bordeaux restaurant knocks this one flat.
