I travelled with my young daughter for an adventure weekend in the mountains and it was more than this. With the warm reception, intelligent conversations and attention received from the owner Jean we felt really welcomed. The house and grounds are a part of the colonial past with a great modern swimming pool, so it catered well for me and my kid. The proximity of Itaipava allowed us to go to a nice dinner and back early enough to hit the National Park next morning and cease the day in the wild. Had a great time there!

Querido André, Above all, thank you for sellecting our property. As you know, I belong from the 4th generation of the Landlords of Samambaia Estate, "The Fern Hill Domaine" na historical place. It was a real pleasure having you and your "incredible" and "clever" little daughter. We hope to have you back with your wife and new baby girl. We love kids and pets.

Samambaia is now 293 years old but there is an interesting mix of solid Portuguese construction of that era mixed with the furniture and decoration from the 1940´s. Another plus is for the small private chapel in rococó style built inside the main building. Something unique, and available for any guest to look inside. The are not a HI hostel anymore and transitioning to something else.We stayed in a king bed room but paying a reasonable price though. Wifi is free, breakfast is decent, room is comfortable, recently painted inside, stunning gardens and surrounding areas are from a forest reserve. There are some small issues inside indicating a lack of some basic maintenance, a sign of these tough times in this country.

Response from Jean Charles B, Proprietário at Fazenda Samambaia
Responded 23 Feb 2016
I can only thank you for your evaluation. Our Fazenda and now Youth Hostel Center, is what was left by the Portuguese Kingdom, rich and beautiful, reflecting times when Brazil was "glamourous". The "Big House" is an old lady as you said, with all it's wrinkles, since i'ts a classified historical monument. Nevertheless, we are a 5 Star Hostel with an excellent infrastructure. Again, thank you very much for your kind stay.

I stayed here in August this year. The building, a little outside of Petropolis (and a small challenge to get to via public transport), is an absolute delight - historical, with Burle Marx gardens, a sense of times past, and a wonderful, caring owner in an ecological environment. I was there in low season, so there were not many guests, but it was a super tranquil place to spend a few days -- i would love to go back to do the Petropolis - Teresopolis walk that some of the other guests were going to do. Relaxed place, caring owner (Jean), a toucan around and about, and the aura of Elizabeth Bishop in the area. If you are in Petropolis, or even Rio, and looking for a spot to stay, check it out! I was there to write and boy was it a good place to do it!

After travelling for more than 6 months, we are finally home. This is the moment that you look back at the places we visited. One of the great places in Brazil was the visiting @ Samambaia hostel. A beautiful historic building with a beautiful garden. It was for us a little paradise in Brazil. There was a very kind owner, who knows how to give guests a pleasant feeling and a great atmosphere. The lunch was terrific and with Christmas day we had a great dinner. The cook knows how to create very tasty and beautiful food. It is also nice to know that it is not only a hostel, but also that they do social projects for children. We had a lovely stay and we recommend it definitely! Leon and Suzan from The Netherlands

My spouse and I just finished a 7-night stay at Samambaia, and I can honestly say it was a stay that I will never forget. We had originally booked two nights, but we kept extending our stay because we didn't want to leave! The owner of the Hostel, Jean, arranged to pick us up at the bus station near by, as we were coming from Ipanema. When we arrived we found him immediately, hopped in his car, and headed back to the hostel. On the way to the hostel, he showed us around the town and told us about some of the history of the town. He pointed out the bus stops that we would need to be familiar with if we wanted to take the bus back into town from the hostel. When we arrived, we discovered that even though we had booked a dorm room, he had put us in a private double room because they had the room open. He gave us a quick tour of the place and told us if we were interested, lunch would be served shortly in the restaurant that is inside the hostel. Everything about this place is amazing. There is a beautiful, well kept pool that we got great use out of. As mentioned above, there is a restaurant in the hostel where you can get free breakfast, and also serves lunch (not included, but absolutely delicious). There are many ducks walking around the grounds, as well as geese, rabbits, peacocks, a few ponies, and even some ostriches (kept safely behind a fence). The location of the hostel is about four miles from town. It's very easy to get to and from town via bus, probably a 10 minute ride both ways. We went into town several times during the week and never had any issues at all. As for Jean and the staff, I honestly can't commend them enough. Most of the staff does not speak English, although Jean and a few others do. Even still, they were all extremely helpful. As mentioned above, Jean picked us up from the bus station and dropped us off when we left. He also insisted on driving us to the Serra dos Orgaos National Park one morning, even though there is a bus that goes there (it is about 20 minutes away and has fantastic hiking trails!). On two occassions we asked the front desk if they could order a pizza for us and have it delivered, since neither of us speak Portuguese well enough to do that on our own. They happily obliged, and while the pizza was on its way, they even set out place settings for us in the restaurant/dining-area to eat our pizza, including a pizza roller and olive oil! A few days before we left we were trying to shore up the next place we were going to, which was an apartment in Rio. It turned out that the owner did not speak English. Jean was more than happy to call the owner using his cell phone and then talk to her on our behalf and finalize all of the plans. I'm not kidding when I say that I don't know how they could have been any more helpful than they were. They have free wi-fi, free breakfasts (delicious coffee cake!), free towels, a beautiful pool, amazing grounds with some pretty awesome animals walking around, and the nicest, most helpful staff I've ever experienced. Even though the bathrooms are shared, they are private one-person bathrooms with a ton of space. The shower was fantastic, with plenty of hot water and a nice rainfall shower head. This may all sound over the top, but I honestly don't have a single bad thing to say about this place. It was an absolute pleasure staying there, and if you considering staying there, do it!!

We greatly enjoyed the all experience, it was not just a place to stay but it will be a long lasting memory. We enjoyed the animals around and the educational purpose of the place. The owner is the most gracious person. We forgot our passports in the room and he went out of his way to return it to us with a kindness that it is rare to come by.

I stayed at Samambaia with my wife for just a day. We immediately realized this is not a conventional hostel. It is a 250+ year old portuguese style facility built with massive logs located in a green preservation area (www.isca.org.br), with many amenities that makes your day relaxing and full of diversity. You are touched by Nature with green and animal wild lives surrounding this cozzy small castle. We had some bucks to spare and enjoyed dinner for two, prepared locally in their kitchen, amidst lit candles and served on top of centennial dinner tables in the Taverna do Cônego eatery room. If you have the time, join the many environmental educational activities in there. "Uncle Jean" and staff are doing a great job for the guests and... the environment.
