Located in the heart of Rio, in the historic and bohemian town of Santa Teresa, The Villa is an 11-room boutique hotel with a hilltop position and a million dollar view! From the hotels main terrace, guests can take in the sweeping vista over the Guanabara Bay and the green hills of Santa Teresa, while enjoying the view of world famous art deco statue Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain. The hotel is only 15 minutes away from the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the samba clubs of Lapa and the Sambodromo stadium. Described by those in the know as the South American Montmartre and one of Rio's hidden gems, Santa Teresa is packed with local artists, galleries, cafes and some of Rio's best small restaurants.
My boyfriend and I arrived in the villa in early February during the carnival. We were given a room with a toilet that didn't work (the flush didn't work),the air conditioning did not work and the room was damp and dirty. We asked the manager (a French man with blonde hair) if we could have an alternative room as the room he had given us was not functioning right. We were pretty upset as we had paid a lot of money (€660) for the 3nights we were meant to be staying there ( accommodation is a lot more expensive during carnival). The manager of the hotel was unable to fix the toilet or the air conditioning. He had no alternative room to offer us. When we decided we could not stay in a room that had a broken toilet and no airconditioing throughout the hot days and nights. We had no other option but to leave. The manager said he would only give us half a refund when we said we were going to have to find a new hotel that night. He was extremely rude and hostile towards us. He has no customer service skills and even shouted at us. I left the villa in tears. My boyfriend got in touch with booking. Com that night in our new hotel. We had to travel an hour outside of Rio to stay in a safe hotel that was available during the busy carnival week. We had a great holiday other then the 5hrs of pure hell that we spent in the villa. We have been in touch with booking. Com for weeks now. We will only get 2/3rds of the money back although we never stayed there. It will take another 3weeks to get the money back after booking.com kindly stood by us and demanded that the manager pay us. Altogether it is taking 2months to get a refund. We would like to warn people against staying here. I never normally write reviews unless I have something positive to say but I'd like to protect people from an unpleasant time in this horrible accommodation. Warm wishes from Ireland, Emma and Darren x…

The Villa offers spacious guest rooms with large private terraces FANTASTIC views in an area that certainly is up and coming. Don’t believe the photos online. The place is worn down. The lack of service is also a big issue not to mention the “restaurant” that is nothing more than a snack bar. Unattentive staff as a first impression, a french, lazy and somewhat arrogant younger front desk guy, however lovely breakfast and snack bar staff. The French owner a nice guy, but he could do so much better by raising service, keeping up the maintenance and offer much better food and amenities. I would have no problems paying double the price if they performed as the nearby Sofitel St. Theresa hotel where I certainly would stay, if it wouldn’t be for the SPECTACULAR views of Rio from ”The Villa”. Such a pitty about this property that holds such a potential. …

"This hotel is very clean and beautiful. The room has great air conditioning and a Jacuzzi with a great view. The staff made every extra effort to make us feel at home and they spoke French, German, Portugese, and English. The free breakfast in the morning was delicious and the cooks are accommodating. I highly recommend this place for couples looking for a romantic getaway on a budget."

I had to go to a Brazilian bank to wire money as they would not take a card payment for the reservation. On arrival there is no signage on the exterior of the building so it was hard for taxi driver to find. We arrived early and we were allowed to have breakfast for and additional cost. We were staying with children so they arranged an extra bed for us. The hotel itself is in a beautiful location with possibly the best views over Rio, however this area of Santa Teresa is remote and there is absolutely nothing around. The hotel is very close to a favela so there may be security issues if walking around the area especially at night. You will need to call a taxi to go anywhere and the taxis can take a while to come as they hotel is far away from busy areas. The room was nice but basic. Our door lock was broken and the jacuzi was dirty inside so I had to clean it myself. The Pool was cold and also dirty with insects floating in which I also had to clean myself as there are no staff around. The first day there was buffet breakfast which worked well, but the second day was table service and very slow. The food was good fresh fruit and bread with ham, cheese and coffee. I only saw one person working at the hotel during my stay. Her name is Lea and she serves breakfast and does the cleaning, She is lovely and always smiling despite her workload. On checking out there was some confusion around the cost of the room as they had quoted me two different prices. Do not expect a luxury boutique as described online, it is good for couples, not so good for families. Overall a quiet and pleasant hotel for the price but basic and unorganised.…

It’s a boutique hotel with jaw-dropping view from the private balcony. Room is spacious and airy. The rooftop restaurant is under renovation so breakfast delivered to the room which is very nice. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and willing to help with any questions you may have. The bathroom needs renovation. Internet connection works on and off. Uber is the best way to travel around.

I'm overall very disappointed with this place, but because there were a few things that I really loved, I would like my review to be as detailed as possible. The room we stayed in was actually the mastersuite of the hotel, Carnaval. It was stunning! We enjoyed the Jacuzzi every night and the terrace was a highlight of our trip. The view from that suite was unbelievably beautiful. However, we did pay a lot of money for the room and we both feel like in the end it could have been much, much better. We knew that the room was large and that we had a private terrace and that's why we decided to pay hundreds of pounds to stay here, unfortunately the hotel was not as nice as we imagined it would be and here is why: - very poor selection of toiletries every day (shampoo and bath salts, no conditioner, no soap, no body lotion). - no hairdryer in the room (one was provided to us upon request but it didn't work properly) - wifi didnt work at any point during our stay and this was upsetting since who doesn't like to be able to stream a movie at night or stay in touch with friends? The non existent internet connection was actually the lowest point of our stay and it did make us feel that we would rather stay in a more modest place were wifi actually works. - customer service wasn't the best, with the exception of the woman that welcomed us who was very warm and likeable. A man in Reception promised us to make dinner reservations for us on our last night and when we got to the restaurant we found out he hadn't. Breakfast in the morning consisted of coffee, freshly squeezed fruit juice, toasts with cold cuts and cheese, scrambled egg and fruit (tipically mangoes and grapes) which was nice the first morning but it became repetitive morning after morning. We also noticed that the amounts of food decreased a little bit every day (fewer cheese slices, smaller juice jugs, one mango instead of two etc) . The pool area was nice and we always had it to ourselves, but of course if all guests decide to use it simultaneously then it would be very small. Location wise, the hotel is well located if you are aware that you will need Uber to move around since even places in the same neighbourhood are tricky to access to due to the extremely hilly nature of this part of Rio. Santa Teresa and Gloria are amazing places to be in but after this visit I know what if I came back to Rio I would rather stay in Copacabana or Ipanema, stay in the middle of the action and take the occasional uber ride if I decided to go somewhere else.…

They are renovating, as I learned from a civil servant, in a very slow work. The pool was slightly murky, the bathroom handle was broke handy, and there were some very dangerous loose boards in the outside areas. The hotel has no restaurant service, except drinks, which was not a problem then there is plenty of restaurants with delivery service in the immediate vicinity. There is no 24 hour doorman, that is, I ordered food after 11pm and could not open the door. They do not teach you this trick. Meals came flying through the wall, can you imagine it? The breakfast is just reasonable but the attendants very friendly in all areas. Accepts dogs. While the Santos Dumont airport is open, there is a constant noise from the planes and the black out of the hotel's best suite (Carnaval) does not work.…

Tranquil, boutique hotel with B and B feel situated on a hill overlooking Rio. Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf) and Christo can be seen. Better view than Hotel Santa Teresa by far! Rooms are traditionally designed, several with terraces, large bathrooms. Only 11 rooms, great breakfast deck with fresh fruit, meat, cheese and eggs. Reception is not 24 hours, but staff was warm, helpful and hard working. They let us stay after check out time until our late flight. We stayed in an array of hotels and areas in the city and this was by far a find. Santa Teresa is generally a more isolated area of the city, but we never had an issue getting a taxi to head out.

We finished our 10 night stay in Rio at this secret gem. It's the perfect location to truly experience the bohemian, Art Deco areas of this beautiful city. The views are without doubt the best in Rio from the suites, pool and also from the rooftop bar. The staff are warm, welcoming and very helpful. Even though some of the finer details are a little tired, overall who cares.... this place is incredible value for money, beautiful, safe and a must if you'd like to experience more than the typical beach cultures. Highly recommend.
