I did not utilize taxi service and therefore I am unable to comment too much on this. From my experience, if you hire a taxi through the hotel, it is generally safe. But I can imagine it will be challenging to get a taxi back unless you can pre arrange with the hotel. If I remember it correctly, the journey by road took about 1.5 hours. Taxi is generally very affordable as compared to most cities in Europe, America and Australia. To go stress-free like I did, I chartered a private van (6 seaters) for a day for RMB 700. If you start early say around 8am, you can easily cover the Longmen Grotto and Shaolin Temple. For me, I even managed to squeeze a short visit to the Peony Garden in between, all within a day. If you want to hire a private English speaking tour guide, it may cost you additionally around RMB 300 to 400 per day. Hope this is helpful.
