Sky Valley Heritage Boutique Hotel, a handcrafted hotel, is in the heart of Xizhou where lies in the north of Dali city, Yunnan. Xizhou is a historic town and the main residential district for Bai Nationality. It is also the birthplace of Dali culture. Historically, the town, protected by Erhai lake and Cangshan mountain, hosted the royals during the Nanzhao and the Dali kingdoms. The building of Sky Vally is one of the 88 national heritages listed private houses in Xizhou. This restoration and renovation project was born from the vision to develop an ensemble of historical heritage building and transform it into a elegant and exclusive destination. Inspired by the Bai's rich artistic heritage, the original arts and crafts from this historical building are well preserved. The floor plan makes a sharp distinction between the quiet and reserved private area and the glamorously festive social area. The construction faithfully respects local traditional techniques, many details including individual window pieces, red copper bathing and bathroom sink, and stone and root carving lamp are dedicated to local crafts by hand.An comfortable space, spanning between 25 and 90 square meters , each of 16 room/suites features one bedroom, bathroom, living room, and/or living room. The walled compound enjoys absolute privacy complemented by sweeping views from an elevated position. Rich catalpa woods and luxurious furnishings create a warm and calming environment with sweeping views. By combining modern design with original historical material, each room/suite offers master craftsmanship, contemporary functionality, passion for pure beauty, and an opportunity glancing into the history. On the first floor, 10 premier rooms are private haven of 25 square meters in size that feature king-size or twin beds. Set within the sand stone walls and floor, oversized bathrooms are equipped limited edition sanitary wares. On the second floor, Sky Valley offers 4 suites that feature king-size or twin beds. Due to the unique nature of the structures, no two rooms are identical. Without compromising the integrity of the dwellings and heritage components, all accommodations enjoy the comforts of air conditioning and internet connectivity. Oversized bathrooms are equipped handcrafted red copper sanitary wares. Bath products are imported from FranceThere are a total of two different styles Sky Valley Family Suites on the second floor, measuring on average 90 square meters. These are furnished in a similar way to the Garden View Suites, however each suites has a extra bedroom.Cuisine is a key element of the experience at Sky Valley, Yue , the Lounge & Restaurant offers a creative take on contemporary Bai cuisine. We are committed to sourcing the highest quality ingredients at the peak of their season. Besides wine, whiskey, tea, and other high quality beverages, custom-designed bar provides 100% estate grown coffee that meets SCAA standard. For those who wish to explore Dali's lush, nature-rich countryside while getting some exercise we have devised a range of guided golf, walking, biking and trekking routes to suit all interests and abilities. Today Xizhou is a Bai for arts, crafts, culture, wellness, food, shopping, and spirituality. The Xizhou Insider Tour is an excellent opportunity to learn the intriguing history of Bai and why Bai is a unique travel destination.

A very nicely maintained hotel in the old Chinese flair. The rooms are spacious and equipped with everything. You live here very quietly. The staff is friendly, but without translation assistance it gets a bit difficult sometimes.
However, one always strives to fulfill the wishes of the guests.

Pros: The hotel is built around two charming, well-restored courtyards, with beautiful wood paneling and carvings. Service was excellent. Good western breakfast and the one dinner I had was very good. Walking distance to Xizhou Town morning market. Modernized room with spacious bathroom. Very quiet setting (there were no other guests, so I can't say how well-insulated the room is from other noise).
Cons: Location: It's at least a 20 minute drive to Old Dali, which has a number of worthwhile attractions, and likewise further from Weisbaoshan with its numerous Taoist temples on the mountainside. It's not in a particularly attractive part of town, and there are only one or two other decent restaurants within a half hour walk. My room with a king bed was fine for me, traveling alone, but would have been tight for two people. The bed had a very firm mattress, which I don't like because I sleep on my side. I was told all their beds are like this, but they gladly and graciously added two mattress pads on top of it for me, which made it fine. (Of the seven hotels I stayed at in China on this trip, this was the only hotel where this was a problem for me.)

Thank you for taking the time out to review your recent experience with us. We are happy to read that you have enjoyed the stay. Your kind words have been shared and are appreciated by us all. We are sorry to hear that you said the mattress is a bit hard for you, even though we have added two layers of cushion to you. We have already given feedback to the company, and then we will consider a softer mattress to meet the needs of guests like you. Thank you again for your advice. We look forward to welcoming you back. Sky Valley Heritage Boutique Hotel.

Wonderful rooms, beautiful hotel, very kind service. But the icing on the cake was the restaurant. after our first meal there we felt no need to eat anywhere else. The hotel is quite far from the sights and center of Dali.

I just returned from two-night stay in this inn. Personally, I won't come back to stay here again! After reading so many positive reviews, I thought it must be a great place to stay. How wrong It is! !First about the location, it is 30 minute away from Dali ancient town, and the hotel charge ¥100 RMB each way to go there, and the airport transportation is ¥250 RMB each way! You won't have better or more convenient options, since this inn is hided away in a small alley which without address or name at all. The transportation is a big issue since you don't have any choice but arranged by the hotel with an nonnegotiable at all fee!
As for the room, there is a big bed, without any space for your luggage or personal belongings at all. There isn't any desk in the room, either. You need to request to get a small portable one to put beside the bed, which left no room to walk around at all! The bed itself is really hard, not even comfortable at all! I really can't image how it will be comfortable to live for two people with no space to walk around at all!
The hotel itself charges a really premium rate, but considering the remote location, lack of transportation options, and the limited room space, I personally feel it really doesn't worth the money at all! I think there are should be much better choices than this one in Dali. It really does't deserve the 5 stars that people are giving here!

Country serenity accessible to folks who don't mind taking the road less traveled, occasionally. You won't find tour groups hanging out in the courtyard. You will find a nice array of travelers who've researched the general destination and seek the charms of accessible but rural China.

5, 4, or 3 stars! I find this hotel incredibly difficult to rate.

This 90 year old Chinese dwelling house surrounding 2 small courtyards looks absolutely stunning and has clearly been lovingly restored. Whilst the exterior is traditional (apart from the small contemporary lobby area), the rooms themselves have modern fittings with superb shower rooms. Only one of the staff seemed to speak English but he and his colleagues were all amazingly helpful. There are, though, lots of problems.

One is location - a good 30 minute drive outside Dali located in a small town. The hour's drive from the airport in a rickety old minibus arranged by the hotel at RMB250(!) with horribly hard seats was a major negative. If you want to see the old town or the famous 3 Pagodas, you must either pay for hotel transport or first walk 15-20 minutes through the town to reach the public bus station.

Then there is precious little to do or see in the town itself apart from a glimpse into life in modern rural China (which can still be quite fascinating). If you want dinner, you are stuck with the hotel's limited menu with beer or bottles of wine the only available alcohol. (There is one other restaurant in the town for dinner but English is not spoken and the menu is in Chinese.) Western breakfast was a choice of juice or tea or coffee, plain yoghurt, eggs, bacon and toast. No other offerings at all! Another issue is the lack of any communal area for relaxing in the evenings apart from the open-air dining area which can get very cold! In the rooms, there is no table, virtually no storage, one small plastic rocking chair and nowhere even to put your case. These issues should surely have been noticed at design stage. If the beds had been regular king-size rather than super wide or if a small alcove had been created thus slightly reducing the extra large shower area, there would be plenty of space at least for a small luggage rack.

And yet, despite the very obvious problems, it's hard to escape the beauty of the hotel itself. Others might not be so forgiving of its deficiencies. Hence the dilemma over star rating. If you want to be away from it all you may well enjoy the very limited facilities here. If you prefer being closer to city life and the local sights, this hotel is not for you! So I have with some reluctance opted for just 3 stars.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay at Sky Valley Dali. We also appreciate your honest feedback, and we will use your comments to ensure that we are continually working to provide our guests with consistently extraordinary experiences in every facet of their stay. We apologize the negative experience of car condition and service you had. Regardless of the car standard and service we required to the local drivers, we will pay much more attention to the quality of transportation service to our customers. Xizhou town has by large stayed remote to the other robust developed cities. This town was able to preserve the wholesome of native Bai's tradition and culture. It is considered as the "living museum of Bai architect" The hotel was restored from a classic Bai building with the architect style trace back to Ming and Qing dynasties 300-500 hundred years ago. While our restoration team was stunned by the raw beauty of the building style and materials, we were also faced many challenges during the renovation process. One of them was the smaller proportion of the rooms in the first floor. Our goal was to bring together the perspectives of the traditional architect, historical influence, modern comfort and contemporary restraint. In the end, we followed our dear to hear philosophy. That is to respect the originality and preserve the past. In the meanwhile we do have to sacrifice a little, hopefully it was not too much . Your comments and suggestions are invaluable to us and greatly appreciated. We will continue to strive to improve our service. And we hope you will consider giving us another chance in the future to demonstrate our commitment to satisfaction in all areas of the guest experience.

The Sky Valley Heritage Boutique Hotel is a restored central courtyard Bai property. Nestled into a residential neighborhood, its gates conceal a lovely garden and quiet refuge. Close by is a vibrant Bai market that is a must-see. Bicycles enable visitors to pedal out into the country past rice paddies, vegetable gardens and painstakingly worked family farms. Rooms are restored with respect for the past but with an appreciation for modern comfort. The staff is warm and welcoming and communicates well in English.

We stayed three days at SVH. The family suite was beautiful and very well appointed. It was neat to stay in an old Bai courtyard home and the owner and designers did a fabulous job renovating the property into a luxury hotel. They got so much right: the space is beautifully designed with water features; the beds are comfortable; the bathroom is 5-star (L'Occitane amenities); they offered bikes (for a fee);staff was friendly and wifi was functional. But aside from the expected, the hotel was lacking. Perhaps it is because we are foreign tourists and the hotel caters more to locals? Or the fact there was no common space to just sit and relax in the beautiful courtyards? Not sure. But we got very little advice on what to do in the area and where to eat (besides their cafe, which was rather pricey and not very good). If we did not speak Chinese, I'm not sure how we would have ordered cars or gotten basic information from the staff. Next time we are in Dali, we will stay at the Linden Center, as I think it is a better fit for us and our traveling needs as a Western family with children. I wish SVH the best, and I appreciate the experience we had there

Dear Cheri A Thank you for choosing Sky Valley. In December, the weather in Dali was around 6~17 degrees. Our hotel rooms were equipped with air conditioning and the dining room had the heater. There are too many places to play in China, it is depends on the specific time of your schedule, but only in Yunnan, you have many choices, such as Dali, Shangri-La, Tengchong, Yunlong and so on. If you need more information, please tell us. Hope to seeing you in the near future in sky valley. Thank you. Dali Sky Valley Heritage Boutique Hotel

You should check with the hotel. We had our own transport so it wasn't an issue. The hotel is not in Dali but in a little village a few kilometers from Dali.
