Detailed Reviews
Before coming to dali I stayed in kunming where I met two french girls who recommended me this hostel.
Even though I just stayed for two nights I can definitely tell you this was the best hostel I've ever been to after almost a month of travelling hk and china.
Chris and Tracy are very helpful and nice. I rented Chris motorbike for a day and rode around the lake, it was perfect.
I slept in one of the 'superior' dorms which was 5 yuan more than the regular one and boy I was glad I spent those 5 yuan. The beds were really wide and soft. I slept like a king.
The hostel is located in one of the quieter parts of the old town which was nice. The main shopping street was just 10 minutes of walking distance away.
If I ever come back to dali ill stay there again, without a doubt.

This place deserves the great reviews. Super friendly and helpful staff, tasty homemade muesli for breakfast and good wifi. Rooms are very comfortable and modern, way beyond the usual Chinese hostel and sets a new standard. The double rooms are hotel standard and come with a great en suite as well as a comfortable mattress. Highly recommended.

I stayed here for four nights and it's definitely one of the much better hostels I've encountered. Rooms and washing facilities are very clean and the dormitory beds are the largest, most comfortable I've slept on in China. They also all have curtains for added privacy. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the affordable 'Build Your Own Breakfast' option is awesome. Also, the view of the nearby mountains from the roof terrace is wonderful, especially when swinging in one of the hammocks, and there is plenty of space up there to hang laundry.

A great cosy hostel in a good location. The staff was so nice and helpful, gave us tips and helped us with direction and a map. The hostel makes you feel at home, the rooms are big and clean with lockers for valuables. The roofterras is just lovely with a lot of plants and hammocks. The price is also good and affordable.

Great location, isolated from the noise but very near old city attractions. Loved the dorm, very comfy, but please, please, get rid of these massive spiders in the showers, the roof is full of it. Had breakfast there, western breakfast was ok, wished there were more Chinese choices and local fruits, instead of apples in the fruit and yoghurt. Maybe mangoes, dragonfruits, etc.? Cheap beer, friendly atmosphere, can't complain on the service.

I live in Kunming, Yunnan (5 hours away) and every time I travel to or through Dali, I only stay at one place--Dragonfly. The great rooftop views with hammocks, the very comfy beds, the extremely helpful staff and owners, the hot showers, the quiet location (which is difficult at times to achieve in China), the relaxed lounge area, the breakfast, the stocked bar--it's all great! Great job Dragonfly staff and owners!

My stay at the Dragonfly was by far the best guesthouse experience I've ever had. My wife and I booked a 4 day stay and are already making plans to come back to this place. The Dragonfly is a true gem; an oasis of peace and serenity that truly serves as a homebase you'd like to call home! Our room was very spacious, with a great view overlooking the mountains, and offered all those sought-after amenities: super comfortable Western style beds, a Western-style toilet and a truly revitalizing shower. Our room was meticulously cleaned on the daily, and hardly a day goes by without me waking up wishing I could go for one of the excellent breakfast items on the Dragonfly menu. I had the privilege of meeting the owner and his wife and in getting to know them soon realized that this level of care and dedication to providing the best possible experience to all their guests flows from their extremely friendly disposition. I would stay here again without hesitation and highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Dali - it doesn't get any better than the Dragonfly.

I stayed for 3 nights in the deluxe single room which is equipped with 24hr hot shower, electric blanket and water kettle to battle the chilly nights. Female receptionist was very patience in answering queries and offering suggestions to explore Dali and its surrounding areas. I adore the much raved about rooftop terrace that brings you in close proximity with the Cangshan Mountain in the day and the stars in the night. I remembered having a therapeutic morning doing laundry at the rooftop terrace. The dining area has an abundance of windows that allow the place to bask in the morning sun as one enjoys a freshly fried omelet.
Prior to arrival, I booked airport transport via the guesthouse and met the friendliest and knowledgeable local driver who shared passionately with me about the history of Dali and the various minority groups. Everything counts in first impression, as the saying goes, he was probably one of the main reasons why I have fond memories of Dali.
For my next destination, I booked a bus ticket through the guesthouse and was baffled by the fact that the receptionist could not name the terminus bus station. Long story short, the bus coach dropped all of us in a parking lot and the distress that resulted was absolutely uncalled for.
Overall, the stay could have been an exceptional one if not for certain travelers who were conversing at a totally unnecessary loud volume in the wee hours.

This hostel is not expensive, we got an 'luxury dorm' for 40RMB/night. There were three bunk beds, very wide and comfortable, each had a shelf, electricity socket and lamp. Also a curtain around the bed so you could have your privacy. Each bed had an assigned locker for valuables, too.
Showers were common but luxurious to anything I saw in this price range in China so far. It felt like ages since I didn't have to take shower over the toilet!
The hostel has very nice and comfortable common area with inexpensive bar and fresh water plus a rooftop area to drink, chat, or do your laundry.
The location is very convenient: old town easily reachable from new town by bus number 8.
The whole place was clean and staff mostly very friendly and helpful.

A friend and I both stayed at the Dragonfly hostel back in February and we were met with the most incredible experience. Not only were the accommodations provided by Chris and Tracy more comfortable that many 4 star hotels (and I'm not kidding here, you could melt away in those beds and the showers were completely updated and AWESOME), they were also incredibly affordable. After what was an amazing first night's sleep, Chris was there in the morning making home-cooked breakfast and freshly ground coffee for the guests. We were soon telling him how we wanted some advice about getting around town and renting motorbikes in the area, and since he had time, he offered to take us around, saving us the cost of a scooter. He made sure we hit all the must-see spots and he even took the time to sit down with us for a local traditional lunch. It was the most memorable experience! Later in our stay when we would come home at night, we always received a warm welcome from Chris and offered to taste any wonderful treats he was experimenting with that evening. I will never forget our wonderful experience and would recommend staying at the Dragonfly Guest House to anyone from anywhere coming to stay in Dali... you won't regret it!
