Bivouac - an old Swiss word meaning “temporary encampment” – is now used by adventurers to describe an improvised shelter. A bivouac is about simplicity. The Bivou is our version of the bivouac for today’s discerning travelers. It is a bed-and-breakfast built around the notion that modern adventurers have modern needs: comfort, sustainability, authenticity and style. We are uniquely located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lijiang, just a minute away from the historic village square of ancient Shuhe. Our vision is simple…We are Designed for Adventure

I can not say enough good things about the Bivou! The friendly service and quality of the hotel leaves you wanting to come back again and a again. So we did. This is our second time staying at the Bivou and this experience was even bettter than the first. This time was winter and their heated floors and comfortable beds lead to the best sleep. The food from breakfast to dinner is delicious (see pictures). The environment surrounding the Bivou is peaceful, but also an easy walk to the center of Shuhe town. I know we will be back again.

From the moment I booked the Bivou I could tell that it was going to be a special experience. I received information about the hotel and the area right away and was able to book a drive from the airport to the hotel. I sighed with joy as I walked into the lobby, passing a peaceful patio overlooking a garden. The staff are wonderful and attentive. I love how it is woodsy, natural and filled with unique touches. Much love to the hotel cat! The food is so yummy...especially the addictive Bivou salad. I need to mention the amazing staff again because I felt so at home. My room was beautiful. My only critique is this: the bed is too hard. I found it challenging to get a full night's sleep and I would totally recommend that the hotel invest in comfier mattresses. This would make it the perfect place. Thank you!

Dear mollylou2015 Thank you so much for dropping us this beautiful and encouraging review! We are glad that you had very high expectations of us and even more delighted to know that we managed to meet your expectations for most aspects throughout your stay. Yes, we are very fortunate indeed to have a nice and unique setting overlooking the lush village farm. When we designed The Bivou, we wanted to make sure that our hotel was able to blend in nicely with the natural feel of the countryside. Tatami is glad to know that he is being mentioned, alongside with the sweet Bivou team. They are all happy to know that you have praised them in your review :)
And of course, we take your feedback on the mattress seriously! We have indeed started to upgrade the mattresses for some of the rooms, and for the others, we are always able to add on a super comfy and soft mattress topping if guests require it. We are very sorry we were not able to do so for you due to the staff failing to bring out this point during our room introduction. We wish we were able to improve your sleep quality when you were here! We promise we will do so the next time you or other guests check in. Once again, thank you for giving us this feedback and also the precious chance to host you and we hope to see you again next time!

Dear Julia L, Thank you for the short sweet title "We love it". Yes, in the midst of the bustling old town of Shuhe, we have found ourselves a nice little niche next to a beautiful village garden that is still lovingly tended to by the locals. On less busy days, we ourselves enjoy just sitting at our outdoor terrace looking at the nature around us. We are glad that you loved the other experiences at The Bivou, and had a chance to try our food, not just the breakfast but also other cafe offerings. Thank you for praising our rooms and staff. We look forward to the next time we will see you.. :) Till we meet again, take care!

No other place compares to this place in Lijiang area. I would not live in chain hotel when there is a choice like this one. They provide very personalized service. Clean, very helpful staff, english speaking (if it matters to you) and who will help you organize everything. They have a great little restaurant that provides western and Chinese food options with numerous vegetarian items on the menu. Breakfast was healthy with made to order eggs or noodles + another changing hot item. The place is an excellent value for money. It is right at he entrance of Shuhe old town. I was surprised to find such a place.

Dear Raj R, When we read a review like the one you have given us, we are always humbled while also greatly encouraged. We know that there are many other good hotels in Lijiang in terms of facilities and size and also staffing. What we have is a small Bivou Team that wants to just make sure that all of our lovely guests who have chosen us out of the thousands of choices available are taken care of like family. We are delighted to know that we have left a good impression! Even our breakfast and cafe may not compare to the wide range of choices available in 5 star chain hotels but yes, we want to make sure that everyone who stays with us is well-fed and ready to explore the exciting sights and attractions around us. We look forward to taking care of you and your family when you come again!

Spent a night there with my family of 2 kids. This place is just amazing. The rooms are so great. Nice staff, so kind! Nice food. It's a very good place for a peaceful retreat, with vegetable fields inside (the kids loved it) and around the hotel, and yet just next to the sightseeing areas. Much better to stay in this area of Lijiang than the main old city.

We traveled around Yunnan for 9 days, and Lijiang was our last stop. Traveling with my husband and 2 children, this place was absolute perfection. A very warm welcome, hot tea and snacks, and friendly/helpful staff were just what we needed when we arrived at the hotel. Staff went above and beyond to make sure we were all comfortable, especially my children. The rooms were very clean and very well decorated. Absolute comfort. The breakfast had a lot of variety - I especially loved that there were homemade items!! We had dinner at the hotel...and the food was absolutely fresh and delicious! Even their cocktails were superb. This place is a must stay. Not only is the hotel fabulous, the staff are incredible...the location of the hotel is fantastic (in Shuhe old town). Everything was just perfect. We will surely recommend this hotel to all our friends and will surely visit again! Thank you for all the kindness. : )

Central location, great food and happy hour (try the ham and cheese plate with a Shangri-La wine) with friendly staff. Modern rooms with central floor heating and you can't beat the location, right in Shuhe Old Town where you can easily spend a day and check out plenty of cafes and shops. Loved our stay there!

An absolute amazing place. During my stay in Lijiang I have there twice, once alone and text day with my friends again. As many other have mentioned it in this platform before the place gives a clam and serene atmosphere. The staff is super nice and helpful. The food is fresh and delicious. We had the salad, the pizza and one of the best spaghetti Bolognese I ever had. Absolutely fantastic is the whiskey sour. Do not miss going there while in Lijiang.

Dear Karin H, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us this wonderful review! It means a lot to us when people choose us for their stay or for a nice meal with their family, and even more so, when they become our friends by visiting us not just once, but twice or even more! Yes, The Bivou's unique setting, surrounded by a real village farm still worked on by the locals who live in our same village, creates a tranquil and surreal atmosphere for a wonderful breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just hanging out in our lounge and bar for a nice cocktail. We are glad that you managed to try out our cafe food. We are proud to share that all our salad greens are grown in our own organic garden and farm, and you can even pick your own vegetables! And of course the Bivou Whiskey Sour, our newest creation by cool folks at The BivyBar. Do come by if you are ever in the area again!

We stayed here for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Loved the views over the garden and the focus on local produce in the restaurant The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food is sensational. Our daughter is into horse riding and they helped connect us with a really good stable nearby. Our rooms were warm and comfortable and we enjoyed sitting on the verandah.

Response from Hwee Ling Aw, General Manager at The Bivou
Responded 8 Oct 2021
Dear David We love it when our guests stay with us for many days and we become well acquainted with their likes and dislikes, just like among friends! When we created The Bivou 10 years ago, we wanted it to be that kind of place where all travellers can walk in and feel instantly at home, whether hanging out in our lounge or mezzanine with their friends and loved ones, or enjoying a nice meal, a drink or a book over a beer or cocktail, or retreating back to the rooms for a rest after a day of adventure. We are glad you like the food served at our hotel. At The Bivou Cafe, the focus on local and seasonal produce was quite a natural thing to do, since we were literally at the edge of a living farm, worked on by the friendly villagers who are ever ready to share with you knowledge or even their freshly picked greens. As an important market town along the Ancient Tea Horse Trail, many villagers in Shuhe (where the Bivou is based) still have horses which they use for transport or horse rides, including our landlords and they know where all the best views are for taking wonderful panoramas of the old town. Lastly, thank you for the encouraging review and we hope you and your family will visit us again in the future!
