The road down to the Intag valley is in good shape and the views are awesome. We didn't stay overnight but spent couple hours enjoying the beautiful views, trails and tranquility. Peter is an excellent nature guide with a lot of knowledge. He showed us of the rooms and it looked clean and comfortable. We also had one of the...

We visited the reserve without staying for the night but just enjoy the trails through the lush forest. We could see birds, butterflies, all kinds of insects we'd never seen before as well as enjoy the amazing landscape. Peter guided us and explained a lot which was great.

This lodge features a separate cabin with 2 rooms separated by a lounge and a main dining cabin with more rooms. The food was fabulous from the pancakes with home-produced honey and quinoa cakes with parsley sauce (gourmet!). Peter the owner was a gracious host who lent books and took us on birding walks. Birding was best at the 2...

Sandy was extremely knowledgeable and helpful during our visit, and she was flexible when I made a mistake with scheduling and our driver. I had no reason to expect the level of help and kindness she showed us. Our group had a wonderful time due to her generosity. The lunch area and facilities at the Refugio are clean and nice,...

Sandy took us on an amazing walk through her Intag Reserve, Oswaldo took us on a birding walk up to Siempre Verde (we didn't enter, but I think you can), we walked the paths of the Lodge, we were served wonderful food by Lupe, and our accommodations were quite comfortable. My daughter and I were pleased with everything.

Perfect getaway. The food is amazing, cooked by a family that I grew very close to during my trip. The art in the rooms are by a local community artist. Peter knows a lot about birds and is there for your service. Osvaldo is one of the most amazing human beings i have ever met!! He is an amazing guide as well.

In November 2015 I stayed some days in Refugio Intag. I have enjoyed it very much: it really is a refuge in a quiet valley amidst wooded mountains. Further: a nice room in the main building (there is another building with spacious rooms, also tastefully decorated), a good cook and very friendly staff who received us warmly. I made some...

Five of us who live in Cotacachi chose El Refuigo de Intag for a weekend getaway. We were blown away with how wonderful this place is and it will now be our #1 go-to place. We made new treasured friendships with Peter, the owner and the other guests. Oswaldo and Lupe and their helper, Norma, and their sweet children were...

It is set in a beautiful valley with a river on the property, with numerous hiking trails and places to relax. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This cloud forest Lodge is located just 33 miles from the market town of Otavalo along the Toabunchi River in northwestern Ecuador. The brick-and-stucco house and the wooden cabin are surrounded by gardens that attract the 200-plus species of birds from the retreat's 60 acres of forest. The often snow-capped 17,000' Cotacachi mountain is in view. Mild temperatures are the norm: an average of 75 to 80 F. Guests can hike along the river or up the mountain to view birds and orchids and other strikingly beautiful wildflowers. The area is free of tropical diseases. Meals are available from the resident caretakers who are also the cook and guide. A thirty-minute drive takes you to the small town of Apuela, with stores, a health clinic and the Coffee Cooperative of ACRI, to witness the way the coffee process works--from farm to roasted beans. Not far away are the hot baths of Nangulvi. These natural hot springs are set in a deep valley, the mountains rising straight from the valley floor. The best part of El Refugio is the closeness to nature it provides. The refuge is off the main road, so the sounds you hear are the birds and the river, and the clouds that frequently cloak the forested mountains make for a dramatic setting. ... more   less

“We took a bus from Quito to Otavalo on Friday, went to the Otavalo market on Saturday, and took a bus to Santa Rosa (the bus stop for El Refugio Logde ). Use a Spanish phrase book to ask the bus driver to let you know when you are at Santa Rosa). We took two buses back to Quito on Wednesday. It was pretty easy. The buses were in good condition, and the tickets were cheap. We were advised not to put our bags in the overhead storage, so we put them at our feet when the buses were full, or next to us when there were empty seats.”
