Hands down, Common Grounds Pai was the best hostel I stayed at during my 4-week journey through Southeast Asia. It's just right around the corner from the town bus station and Aya Travel. Felt great vibes immediately on arrival - there were people hanging out on floor mats in the common area reading books, getting to know each other, napping; guests testing out their balance skills on a gibbon slackline; pretty girls working on their hula hooping with Gigi, a local legend.

Met so many rad people in the short 3-days I was there. Once I settled in at CG, I knew I would never want to leave. In fact, some other guests had been there as long as several weeks unplanned. Mitch and Tyger are great at making breakfast- definitely made with lots of love. Mitch also did a great job with making sure we I had everything I needed to make my stay comfortable. He was also very flexible in allowing my friends and I to extend our stay for several nights when we didn't book them in advance.

Though Mitch is an excellent business owner (he's an American expat from the University of Florida) with plenty of attention to detail, he's also managed to create such a great family feel here - which is what totally sold me on this place. CG is absolutely perfect if you're traveling solo. You'll meet cool activity partners who are down for everything, and you can get that quietness and chill space that's also so crucial. Great for groups too- just don't be dumb and close yourself off to meeting new folks.

TL;DR - CG is incredible - my favorite guesthouse in all of Thailand. You'd be an idiot NOT to stay here. Even if you can't stay here (I imagine it will soon become hard to book a bed), come hang out. It'll change you!

Mitch, Tyger and Fai - thanks for such an amazing stay. Best of luck to y'all. I'll be back soon!

I arrived in Pai expecting to stay 3-4 days, with no plans at all other than to explore a bit. After looking up the best hostels online I found Common Grounds, and booked a couple of nights. A month later I was still there...

The rooms/bathrooms aren't the best I've seen in a hostel, but for your average backpacker they're definitely good enough. Don't go there if you're used to staying in fancy hotels or anything, but having seen a few other places in Pai, you'll be staying in one of the better hostels in terms of acommodation/facilities. The hostel is so close to the main part of town and walking street, with all the great street food, that you won't need to drive anywhere for dinner (although I did, being the lazy b@stard that I am...)

The best thing about the hostel is the people and the atmosphere. The vibe of the hostel is chilled, with good music, not a party hostel but it's certainly a lot of fun. When the hostel is packed (which is most of the time, you're best off booking ahead) there's a great atmosphere, with everybody hanging out in the communal area, drinking, playing pool or cards or beer pong, laughing, sometimes singing, sometimes dancing. Sometimes doing hula-hoop tricks. People usually go out into Pai after the bar closes. I would say the hostel is best for younger backpacker types, but everybody feels welcome.

One of my favourite things about the hostel, which I haven't seen in any other place, is the number of backpackers Mitch (the owner, you'll meet him) lets work there for their accommodation. After staying there for 3 days, and enjoying myself so much, I asked if I could extend my stay for a couple of weeks, and Fai (Mitch's girlfriend) said to me 'why don't you just work here??' to which I replied 'OK why not?????' My main work involved making drinks for people in the evening, along with 4-5 other staff, so it wasn't what I'd call strenuous work, but the main benefit of having so many people there was that we'd make sure everybody in the hostel came together and no one was left out. If you're travelling solo, like I was, I really recommend Common Grounds for meeting people. Everybody is so welcoming and friendly.

A lot happened in my month there, and I can't be bothered to write it all out, but I didn't want to leave when I did, and then I went back there for the last week of my 5 months in Thailand, so I guess you probably get what I'm trying to say: Common Grounds is a cool place, go there.

Oh yeah, and the dogs there are the best. Panda is my favourite, he insists on riding with you on your scooter whenever you go out. Worth going there just for that.

Not much for me to review here because I didn’t spend much time in the common area, which seems to ‘make’ this hostel. From the look and sound of it, the people that come to this hostel and socialize in the common room are what make this hostel great. My girlfriend and I got a private room because we just needed some time away from socializing.

There’s a pool table, large couch, hammocks, and plenty of other great features in the common area. I wish we were in the mood to hang out there longer.

The walking street is a block away and the hostel is super secluded being located at the end of a dead end.

We rented the 3 person room with a full sized bed on the lower floor and a queen in the loft area. It was quite nice.

That all said, we enjoyed our stay. Nothing bad to write about it other than maybe it being slightly pricey for what you get. It did the job, though, and it did it well.

Common grounds is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. The staff are wicked and make things really fun. Jordin will hook you up with all his local knowledge and will go well out of his way to make sure you have a good time in Pai.

I couldn't recommend it enough.

The rooms are an average hostel room. They had free water for you all and were cleaned daily. The staff were amazing though. Service with a smile and helped me as I lost my card. They kept me going all evening and took all my details in case it is found. I cannot fault the staff and their work for accommodation people! The only downside some people have is it can be loud as people drink before heading out but the staff try their best to manage it. It didn't bother me at all with the sound, but a few people got put off. For a hostel it ticks the boxes!

The right place to meet new people. It is located very central and the vibes are great too. Just hanging around and talking all day long can be a great occupation there. I will definitely return......

This place was a treasure we found at the end of our trip unfortunately. We got to stay for 2 nights and it was amazing! Live music, tons of people to meet, and extremely friendly staff. We had to cancel last minute due to a change in our plans and when we went to tell them (intending to pay anyway) the guy refunded us with no questions asked. If you are staying in Pai, you have to stay here! I was traveling with friends, but if I were alone this is an extremely social and fun hostel to get to know other backpackers. Not to mention the couple who runs the hostel is absolutely adorable :)

I think most of the glowing reviews are probably from people who find other like minded tourists here. If you're a friendly 19 to 23 year old and you didn't go to Pai to actually SEE Pai so much as you visited Pai to get smashed, yell loudly about nothing, sleep until 2pm, smoke all afternoon and eat toasted sandwhiches from 7/11 then you'll like this place. If you want to see the sights and hang out somewhere you can have a conversation with someone who isn't stoned or drunk, stay somewhere else. Great location, fancy website, friendly staff, clean towels, clean rooms, lockers in dorms, bunks very wobbly, loud at night, couldn't work out who was on reception and who was just a guest, communal area a bit dirty and covered in dog hair and I suspect fleas. Overall quite alright, just depends what you're looking for.

I stumbled across Common Ground by chance when I arrived in Pai the first time. I stayed 1 night then immediately changed my plans to return a few days later to give it a proper chance as I knew I had found somewhere special. After having visited most countries in South East Asia over a period of a year I have seen many hostels and this one is top of my list. I ended up staying here 3 times for a total of about 6 weeks and found it very difficult to leave. The common area is relaxed and promotes socialising which as a solo traveller is really important to me. Pai is such a fantastic place and has such a happy vibe about it and Common Grounds really captured that for me. The owners and staff are really friendly and as someone who stayed a long time you can’t help but get to know everyone. The rooms are nice and most have air conditioning and even when staying in the ones without I found I was quite happy at night with just a fan, even in the hotter season. It is quite a rural setting so don’t expect 5 star luxury but then this is the north of Thailand not Australia or any other developed country. Great value and great location right in the middle of town. If you want a comfortable and friendly place to chill between day/night time activities then this is the place for you!

Everyone who goes to Pai always seem to extend their trip by one or two nights, its that sort of place- the main reason for us to do that was the great staff and guests at Common Grounds. The perfect location - having arrived off the minibus of curves you can stagger two hundred meters and you have arrived at a really chilled out, fun hostel that always has someone to chat to, a few hammocks and some great music. I loved it so much i am on my way back three weeks later!
