Detailed Reviews
Just came back from a WONDERFUL 3 nights stay at Coral Reef. "Wonderful" not necessarily because of the chalets, but more because of the entire experience at Tioman. I LOVED it. So sad to be back. I digress.
Anyways, starting things off, I think it's a great place to have with the price of only RM 160 per night. It's pretty cheap, and the room is amazing. Check out the pictures. They have a hammock at the deck of every room, which we truly enjoyed! However, if you're unable to sleep on hard mattresses and hard pillows, be sure to load up on some alcohol (duty free) to help you sleep better.
OK, here comes the part where you need to BEWARE, especially if you are single ladies travelling or if you are travelling with teenage daughters. There's a member of the staff who calls himself "Lan", who goes around chatting up girls, trying to get lucky with them. My friend and I (two girls travelling alone) found him "friendly" at first and started out just small talking with him. Next thing we knew, he was bragging about how he was about to marry his third wife in Thailand, and how he was looking for a fourth one.
Never mind that, he was telling us how he had got lucky with one of Coral Reef's guest from New Zealand. And then proceeded to ask what my friend was doing tonight (he found my friend cute, of course), and whether we would like to come "party" with him at the Cabana few doors away. HELL NO!! Not only that, he took one of our beers without being offered. I find that utterly rude. But what's worse is that he just kept intruding in our space and causing us to be uncomfortable.
He also bad mouthed our neighbors for some misunderstandings, which should not happen.
My point is....this guy is dangerous. He will try to sleep with you if you're travelling on your own. So if you do not want trouble, DO NOT STAY HERE.
I've already made my complaints to the management, but by the looks of it, I don't think they're getting rid of him, as the lady owner takes pity on him coz he's from a poor family and no one else wants to hire him. They KNOW that this is a problem, yet they are letting him stay.
So single ladies, if you REALLY want to stay here, just be careful if a young Malay man named "Lan" approaches you.

Our boat arrived tioman bejaya docking port at 9.30pm and we haven't made any bookings. Luckily we met two local boys who recommended Coral Reef.
Checked out the room conditions of their budget room RM50 and deluxe room RM100. Their deluxe room was heaven compared to the budget one. It was beachfront (literally), the ensuite toilet was made of marble tiles and really clean. Had AC, hot shower, twin bed, TV and the fact that it was beachfront made it super valuable.
You won't be able to find good rooms at this price at the village of ABC. Coral Reef is located at Tekek, the quieter but more beautiful village.

We stayed in the deluxe room which is beachfront with a nice little terrace with a private hammock. At 200 RM its not a bad deal. The room is decent with AC, a mosquito net and TV (which had a couple of movie channels). Its not brand new but was good enough (particularly given standard of most things on Tioman). The breakfast is fine and the staff were friendly. Would stay in this room again if I couldn't get a room at Swiss Cottage.

Stayed at Coral Reef Holiday Beach Resort for 5 Days 4 Nights. Very comfortable stay with good working Air Con/Wifi/Water Heater/Clean Bedsheets/Clean Towels/Soap & Shampoo. The chalet huts are right at the beach front and very convenient to swim/snorkel in the clear waters right at doorstep. The property is maintained by a very warm and caring local Tioman resident family, incredibly warm hospitality to make all guest feel at home during their stay. They work very hard and do their best to provide guests with the best possible vacation experience and I truly appreciate the effort/hospitality. Location is excellent, with Cabana Cafe/many other local restaurants/convenience shops located within just a short walk away. Will definitely stay at Coral Reef Holiday Beach Resort again when I visit Tioman Island. Thank you Abang Adik & Family for the memorable stay and I hope to be back again!!

I really like the view from my door, a great beach front with few steps to the sea ... Very nice sunset too. Hammock every where to chill and relax. The staffs are friendly too. Other than that, everything just average (room condition, cleanliness) However, it's near to jetty, no pick up required, you can walk over to the hotel and some convenience shops around. I am happy about it.

I recently returned from a 5 day 4 night stay in Tioman Island. Together with 4 other friends, we had a wonderful time there. Stayed in Kampung Tekek, at the Coral Reef Holidays resort. The place is suitable for budget travellers who aren't expecting much except for a place to shower and to crash at night. The prices were pretty reasonable. It is within easy access of the beach, and is about 800m from the jetty. Get off, turn right and walk straight down the road. From the hotel, food is easily available as there are quite a few shops along the road. I would recommend a stall located about 15 to 20 m from the hotel (get to the road, turn right and walk straight down, the place is just after the nearest duty free shop). They serve lovely ikan bakar (roast fish). There are several duty free shops close by, so tobacco and liquor are plentifully available - for anyone planning to just lounge in a hammock by the beach for a few days, pickling your liver, this is the place. For those game for a little scuba diving, I would sincerely recommend Ray's Dive Adventures located just next door. The prices are comparable to several other dive outfits that I checked out. They offer diving classes as well. The guys here are seriously cool, laid back and fun-loving - really nice guys to just chill with after a dive. Also just as important, they are knowledgeable about the dive spots around the island (what to look out for) and they are responsible as well (so no worries as far as safety is concerned). I dived 6 times with them and enjoyed each one thoroughly - each dive was relaxed and I could take my own sweet time browsing the coral beds. Anyone interested can google them out for the contact details, or you can get Ray's phone number from Has (she owns the Coral Reef Holidays resort). Ask for Ray, Chloe , Brian or Sham.

When we arrived the receptionist met us (she was very sweet and friendly). we paid in advance and she took us to our room. Right on the beach with a beautiful view. So far so good! But our experience soon deteriorated...
The room was very, very simple. The linoleum floor was peeling off to reveal the concrete slab underneath. The curtains were old bed sheets nailed into the wooden window frame. I could go on. But I was expecting simple accommodation, so it was ok. We had an air conditioner and a hot shower, so we were ok.
We had nice afternoon of snorkelling, followed by a nice dinner at a cool beach cafe just 100 meters away, then settled into bed. This is when the horror story begins...
There was a bunch of kids staying in the room next to us and they were having fun letting off fireworks. It continued on until quite late, but I didn't want to make a fuss so me and my kids tried to sleep. But by about 4am I'd had enough, so I walked out, and speaking in Malay politely asked them to stop because they were probably keeping everyone awake. They stopped, but 5 minutes later it started up again. This time they all scampered back into their room as I came towards them. This time I wasn't so polite and told them to cut it out, or else, and went back to bed. Me and my kids awoke 10 minutes later to firecrackers going off right at our room door, followed a few minutes later by rocks being thrown at our window. We just hunkered down and waited for morning.
The next morning I went and mentioned what had happened to the receptionist - nobody was there so i snuck behind the counter to check the room register... Those kids would be there another 5 days. Damn. Eventually the receptionist arrived and and it turns out the kids were relatives of the boss! I eventually found their guardian and mentioned to her that if it happened again I'd call the police. I then moved rooms to the far end of the complex to get as far away as possible from my tormentors.
As it turns out, they were very quiet from then on.
But that's not the end of it... The following morning we went to breakfast to find only a piece of scrap paper with "no chef" written in crayon. Hmmm.
But that was probably a blessing disguise. Breakfast most days was white bread, margarine and jelly (not jam. Jelly). There was also powdery scrambled eggs and cordial. On one day we were treated to the staff's leftovers from the night before (rendang, nasi kuning, etc).
I also found the staff to be mostly impolite and offensive. I asked one chap (the chef, I think) if he could suggest where I could find some transport. His answer, with a scowl on his face "I'm tired. Ask someone else".
But by this stage the crappy room and the appalling service had become a comedy for us.
Don't stay here no matter how desperate you are for accommodation.
One last comment... I'm not a serial complainer. I actually joined tripadvisor just now so that I could share this with you.

Start from the tele-communication with the "resort", the receptionist always told us: "Do you know we are very busy?" without answering to our queries. Alright, we just accept that maybe they were really busy. However, the unhappiness did not end even when we first come into contact with the real person from the "resort".
When we just arrived, we were not welcome by the person in charge. There is no sign hold by the person in charge to show that he is from the "resort". We have to look around to see who actually come to fetch us. Suddenly, the person in charge shouted to us (please refer to the below conversation)
Person in charge: Who are you looking for?
We: We going to stay in the "resort".
Person in charge: Why you don't say earlier?
We: (Do you think that we know you are the person in charge? You are not even hold any sign to show us.)
Person in charge: The car hasn't come. Just wait.
We felt that the person in charge is really rude.
Finally, the car came and we proceeded to the receptionist (Lydia) to know more about our snorkelling tour (This is the question we asked in phone but never get the answer as they are "very busy".). Lydia showed her inpatient face and kept asking us to give her RM100 each. For sure, as a customer, we have the right to as least have a rough idea what we are paying for, therefore, we continued to ask simple questions like how many spots we can go and other questions that we never get the answers from phone. Lydia answered us but still keep rushing us to pay. I suggest that since they are really care about the money, they can ask their future "victims" to pay a booking fee for the tour if they really afraid that people will not pay.
Due to the conveniency, we selected their tour and proceeded to our room to prepare for our tour. The room is ok but we cannot find the remote for the air conditioner. We asked for help and knew that the remote is shared with the room beside. This made us speechless.
Once done preparation, we informed Lydia and she said we have to wait as she said she scheduled our tour at 10 but we are late. We are all stunned as we never get any information about our tour through phone. Furthermore, the only ferry time that day is 8 from Mersing, it is impossible for us to reach the "resort" by 10 and how can we start our tour at 10? Lydia said we have to wait because we were not arrive before 10 which is impossible for ferry at 8. We have no choice and waited for more than an hour until the boat man come.
On the other hand, their shared toilet is stinky which we cannot accept it. Toilet can be old but at least it should not have any unpleasant smell.
Furthermore, at the night before we leaving early in the next day morning, we asked Lydia whether they can arrange transport for us to the jetty. She told us the price is RM20. However, after she called the person in charge, she said RM50. It is really unreasonable as it is only 5 minutes journey. We feel it is really ridiculous and decided to walk with our bags instead of letting these bad hearted "businessman" earning people's hard earned money.
We strongly recommend all not to stay in this "resort" as their service is really bad.

Me and my friends stayed there 2 days ago for a 2D 1N trip. When we arrived at Tekek Jetty, we (10 of us) had to cramp into a tiny 4 wheel drive arranged by the resort. Thank god the journey was less than 5 mins.
When we arrived at the coral reef resort, we were NOT greeted nicely. In fact , the lady kept on pushing us to collate the money (RM100 each) for snorkeling later( instead of settling us down first) She was rude.
Not only that, we had to wait for 1.5hrs for the "boat driver" to take us out for snorkeling. When we complaint to the lady, she definitely wasn't polite and said that person waited for us earlier on for 1 hour. Now it is our turn to wait for him. I told her that it is NOT fair because we followed the ferry schedule and we weren't late or anything.
All in all, room was dirty, toilet was bad. Service was terrible. I will never ever stay there again and I advice all not to too. Totally ruin our Tioman trip.
