Tioman Island’s only boutique resort, and one-of-a-kind in Malaysia. This small and exclusive resort of 16 rooms is hidden amidst 11 acres of lush tropical rainforest. A one-village-one-resort property, Japamala has its own private and quiet beach. While some charming Malay village-style villas and chalets dot the jungle and beachfront, others nestle in the most breathtaking spots. Best described as an ‘eco-luxe’ resort, Japamala transcends the experience of living close to nature by redefining it with a touch of luxury. Designed by natural streams, cliffs, and towering boulders and where no trees are felled, the entire resort borrows from nature its elements to offer an exceptional sense of paradise and freedom from the real world.

Had a wonderful 4 night stay here in Aug 2020. We have been in Malaysia 9 years and this was one of the best experiences we have had. From the moment we arrived at the jetty we were treated very well - we were given a pack with masks and hand sanitizer and the on the boat they had cool towels and even Wifi. The staff at the resort were wonderful, the food was fantastic and the place was so peaceful and relaxing. The afternoon tea, sundowners and night caps were all such lovely touches. The resort are very honest about the fact that some of the rooms require a walk (it is not far but if you are travelling with small children you should take care, and this is made clear). We had one small issue with the room which the staff dealt with quickly and very professionally. We were very impressed. The sunsets were amazing and the wildlife wonderful. We were sad to leave and are looking forward to going back.

Dear Dekari, It was a pleasure having you at Japamala Resort! We are truly glad that you have enjoyed your experience with us! Here at Japamala, our guest are our number one priority, ensuring that all our guests receive great customer service with a big smile and we are glad that you manage to experience just that. Japamala is indeed a gem in Tioman Island as it provides absolute privacy and tranquility. We are happy you enjoyed our Japamala touches such as the welcome drink, afternoon tea, sundowners and night cap. Japamala Resort is built on the land of our beloved flora and fauna, hence we do not eradicate nor destroy the natural environment. Hence, to preserve our natural surroundings, some of our rooms are built on high ground, where bare land was available. It is a beautiful walk to the room, surrounded by the lush greenery and the sounds of the jungle. Your words are greatly appreciated and it will indeed push the team further and motivate them to continue improving. On behalf of the team, we would like to thank you once again for choosing Japamala Resort and hope to welcome you back in the near future. Warm Regards, Zachary and The Japamala Team

Not a single bit of single-use (except for paper tissues 😉) and yet nothing’s missing when staying at this amazing place. With only 16 rooms and a super-friendly crew who radiate pride in their workplace, you feel safe and personally welcome from the first minute. All natural materials require permanent care and can never be perfect, but that’s the charme of living in the midst of nature. Great cuisine, wonderful complimentary drinks, hiking trails, boating, snorkelling and diving options make the TV totally unnecessary and you even don’t mind the poor internet connection. If you’re lucky like me, you may meet a monitor lizard in the pool when you come for the morning swim (they are harmless and leave the pool politely as soon as a human approaches 😅).

All in all, the very best relaxation in nature that we have experienced!

4 days 3 nights escape in this Rustic Jungle-Luxe Resort was truly amazing!

Upon arriving at Mersing Jetty, we instantly felt welcomed with the greetings of cold towels and refreshing drinks to fight the heat. The boat ride was about an hour but it was not a boring journey to the island as the crew was friendly and wifi was made available to us.

When we've arrived at the jetty of Japamala, we were again greeted with refreshments, was informed of the complimentary items we had, checked in, and was shown to our room (HIllside Sarang Room 4).

As we went on with our stay, we managed to enjoy amazing dishes from both the Italian (Il Tiempo) and Thai (Tamarind Terrace) restaurant that was at the resort. Being a seafood lover with an Asian taste bud, we opted mostly to dine at the Thai restaurant. Both places were amazing and the chef at the Italian restaurant was able to cater to our non-dairy and gluten-free diet.

Not forgetting to mention the complimentary service that came along with the resort. The breakfast was delicious and hearty; a great way to start your day. The sundowners for an hour with your choices of beverage were what we looked forward to every evening, along with the nightcap of brandy and dark chocolates by your bedside. However, the afternoon tea could have had more choices of tea and snacks.

There were several areas that were a tad bit disappointing to us such as the airconditioning unit that wasn't functioning well, housekeeping never cleaned or tidied up our room, the whirlpool was supposed to run on a scheduled time but it never did turn on for us, and a hole in a wall that allowed critters to come in and ate a snack. But after bringing it up to management, they made it a priority and catered to our complaints, and everything was done immediately. Zach was a wonderful resort manager and resolved these issues immediately. He even offered us a bottle of wine for our discomforts and made sure we were well throughout our stay.

To add, all the staffs were great and amazing and catered to my needs as this was our anniversary trip and my marriage proposal to my now fiance. One staff in particular, BK, won our hearts with his kind and friendly gesture. He gave us an amazing service and we will forever remember him.

We'd definitely come back to stay at Japamala. The place is truly amazing and with the service they provide, it is truly value for money.

Thank you for the wonderful experience Japamala!

the moment we stepped into the paradise, we were served with refreshing drinks, our luggage were taken by the staffs, the staffs will always greet us with such welcoming pleasant smiles, the room was amazing, be ready to take a bath facing the open sea!!!! inside the room everything was complete except there was no iron and it will slightly hot during evening, figured out the best thing to do in the evening was to relax besides the pool. first morning, we were served with fantastic breakfasts, then swimming in the open sea, had our marvelous lunch facing the magnificent sea and dinner as well. it was wonderful, that we had our mini jungle tracking, enjoyed two of the swimming pools, the coffee must be tried at least once! i wish i could put the whole entry of our amazing trip to japamala here but all i can say it s a trip that one must tried at least once

Dear fieheffny8989, Thank you for choosing Japamala Resort! It was indeed a pleasure having the both of you stay at the resort with us. We are truly glad that you enjoyed your stay with us here at Japamala. What makes Japamala truly special is our little touches such as the welcome drink upon arrival, our afternoon tea, complimentary cocktail/mocktail hour at our beautiful jetty and our nightcap, served with a smile! The Sea Cliff room you stayed in gives spectacular views of the sea. We are truly happy you enjoyed your room, our common lounges, trekking activities and the authentic Thai and Italian food. We do not provide irons or ironing boards in the room; however we happily assisted your good self with laundry and ironing at our resort laundry facility. Your kind words of our staff is greatly appreciated, and it will continue to motivate them and push them to keep on improving. On behalf of the team, we would like to thank you once again for choosing Japamala Resort and hope to welcome you back in the near future. Warm Regards, Zachary and The Japamala Team

We arrived at Japamala Resort on the evening of 20th May for a 6 nights stay.
Our stay here was wonderful as although the chalets are rustic, they are clean with fairly comfortable beds and great views, including gorgeous sunsets.

The elegant, beautiful, relaxed and natural ambience of the resort soothes your soul and resort staff are discreet, attentive and keen to please.

Snorkeling from the resort’s jetty is also good, with some healthy coral and during the middle of our stay we were lucky enough to see a turtle which was impressive.

Regarding the food it is fabulous quality and style, made to order, with no buffets and Julius the executive chef is a really great member of the resort team. Our only minor grumble is that at breakfast, drinks from the menu were restricted to 2 per person – a shame as there were a range of coffees and smoothies we wanted to indulge in…

Regarding excursions, the resort has a number of trips that can be purchased and we chose to do the ‘Waterfall’ – which required the resort arranging a local speedboat to take us to a really beautiful village 15 minutes up the coast from Japamala, from which we walked through gorgeous scenery for 1 hour to a breathtaking waterfall. Over the years we’ve seen plenty of waterfalls – but this one was truly magical and beautiful.

Speaking from experience and to be honest, Japamala Resort has more ambience, natural beauty, authenticity and charm than most resorts in the Maldives and we look forward to returning. Japamala staff in particular who made our stay really special were Zai, Rippon and Julius – they were so professional, helpful and charming.

Note: please be aware of the impact of varying sea tides on crossings between the mainland and Tioman Island, especially if you are undertaking a half day road transfer to/from Kuala Lumpur. To be honest it might be wise to do a 1 night hotel stop en-route to/from Japamala (e.g. in Malacca) in order to ensure a relaxing travel schedule. Regarding making travel arrangements well in advance the sea tides only seem to be known/published a couple of months in advance. However, don't be worried by this and Japamala is definitely worth it.

Japamala is advertised as luxury hotel however it is far away of even low luxury expectations. I originally planed 5 nights stay there but after arrival (I had not received any welcome email before actual arrival to this hotel) I experienced very weak or no Wi-Fi , no mobile network, no telephone in the room, lack of dinning possibilities from 3 pm till 7 pm (be aware there is no room service there) and the questionable room standard( dirty bathroom, leakage from the ceiling, filthy and extremely outworn terrace with dirty swimming pool. I left after 2 nights highly disappointed. I claimed the refund for 3 nights however my claim is not accepted by hotel.

Dear ewa_malaysia2020, Greetings from Japamala Resort! We truly are disappointed that your expectations were not met during your stay with us, despite the countless efforts provided by the Staff. Please be informed that we do brand ourselves as a rustic eco-luxe resort, a different segmentation within the luxury brand. We focus and emphasize on the natural elements and the environment, providing our guest with rustic-luxe rooms and the luxury of connecting with nature. Our team is always in constant communication with our valued guest from the beginning of the reservations process, ensuring all information is relayed to ensure smooth travels to Japamala. As for our WiFi capabilities, please be informed that Japamala Resort does not advertise the availability of WiFi on the resort. It is clearly stated on our home page that due to the remote location wifi service is very limited and not constant and cellular reception is not covered at the resort. Due to the RMCO restrictions, Japamala Resort has decided to reduce contact points with all our guest to ensure guest and staff safety, hence the dining hours has been reduced between the hours of 3:00PM – 7:00PM. Nevertheless we accommodated your requirement for a meal outside of the mealtimes and opened the restaurant to ensure your comfort. Additionally we do serve our complimentary afternoon tea at 4:00PM, together with our delicious Malaysian kueh, and I hope you were able to enjoy them. Here at Japamala, we ensure strict cleanliness standard incl. disinfection, nanomisting etc. We did inquire with your good self after check-in on the room and no issues on cleanliness was raised with us. I understand that there was a storm on your 1st night that has caused the terrace and plunge pool to be filled with leaves and twigs. We inquired with your good self on the next day on a preferred time for our housekeeping to clean the terrace and pool; however you have declined the housekeeping service. It is always our priority to ensure guest satisfaction at the resort. Reading your review makes us sad, as the staff went out of their way and comfort each of your request without hesitation. The only request which we were not able to comfort, was a fast internet connection, which is clearly stated on the website and highly dependent on weather and atmospheric conditions as we use satellite internet. We understand that we were not the kind of resort you were looking for, due to the limited connectivity. We apologize for the inconvenienced caused during your stay with us and we always thrive to better ourselves to ensure maximum guest satisfaction. We thank you for your feedback and hope to see you again in the future. Best regards, Zachary and The Japamala Team

We had a wonderful stay in the resort for 3 nights as we decided to spent our honeymoon there. We were pampered by the amazing nature and splendid resort team, gave us the coziest experience. We stayed in Seaview Sarang, cozy and spacious room with two private pools and room service twice a day made our stay feels very special, they even light up candle at night (very romantic ) ,serves brandy and chocolates. We welcomed by honeymoon decoration with roses, swans and complimentary dessert stating "happy honeymoon". The place is all about relaxing and rejuvenate your energy away from our hustle and bustle. We enjoyed every part of the resort , the environment of the room, the beach sunset, evening cocktails hours, the swings (unleashed the child in us) and some snorkeling around the beach. A big hats to the team managing the resort, so far the best hospitality we have experienced. Sarbir the bartender who will mix any drink according to your taste, EL and BELL at front office always gives us their warm smile, Loritha always makes us laugh especially during the cocktail hours and Zach the manager who checks on our well-being during our stay in the resort. The place is worth every cents that we spent. We also enjoyed their red curry seafood, so far the best we have tried. Really looking forward to come back again. Missing JAPAMALA now as
i write the review.

We stayed during the RMCO and it was a truly relaxing experience. Food was great, the setting was beautiful and there were lovely ‘added extras’ and special touches included in our stay. The sea was clear and good for snorkelling. The loungers were well kept and in good condition. It was great to see water being provided throughout the day in glass bottles. Service was mainly good, a little slow on the odd occasion but no major issues. Would recommend!

Went there for our honeymoon. Japamala is a private resort with only 16 rooms, felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Special thanks to El, Belle and Zach for your warm hospitality. Always checking up on us to make sure everything is great. Here's a tip, make sure to get the sea cliff room, and request to get room number 16. The view is just breathtaking, overlooking the jetty, and the clear blue sea just underneath the balcony.

The food was great, the breakfast choice is plenty and we tried most of it. Here they have two restaurants, The Tamarind for thai cuisine, and Il Tempio for italian. Both are great! The turndown service was very nice, a lovely handwritten personal note and chocolate left on the bed everyday. Complimentary cocktails during sundown was the best. A very relaxing place to watch sunset.

The beach is clean, white sand and clear blue water. We managed to snorkel around the resort and it was lovely. We saw many kinds of fishes, and lucky us a baby shark as well! There is absolutely no need to take an extra trip to snorkel around the island. They also provide kayak to use anytime we want, and it's free. Japamala truly has it all!

Dear Ms. Kirti Tejani, thank you very much for your message. Please be informed that we do have limited vegetarian food options available and some of our non-vegetarian food items can be personalized and altered to fit the vegetarian dietary needs, subject to availability of ingredients. As Japamala Resort is completely private, we only have two restaurants on site. Other restaurants on the island will be accessible by boat.
