Matamanoa Island is an intimate and secluded adults only Fijian resort. We are set in the beautiful Mamanuca Islands approximately 30 kilometers west of Nadi International Airport - experience a true gift of nature. The Island boasts a volcanic cone jutting out of the azure waters of this unspoiled marine sanctuary. Clad with native bush and palm trees, the brilliance of the vegetation contrasts magnificently with the white curved sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Combined with nature, we have created a haven for those who want to relinquish the pressures of a busy lifestyle. This is for those who dream of peace and tranquility. To achieve this special atmosphere, Matamanoa Island Resort has adopted a year round policy of not permitting day-trippers or children under the age of 16 years.

Matamanoa Island is a beautiful place. We came here to celebrate a special occasion and it was lovely to be on such a beautiful island where we happily were forced to relax for 10 nights. This may seem a long review but its totally honest with positive and not so positive feedback for a very good reason and hope management might take something seriously. Our beachfront bure room was lovely and spacious with a plunge pool overlooking the ocean. We arrived to find Happy 10th Anniversary on our bed but it wasn’t our anniversary. I was here to celebrate my early retirement. The aircon was good, bit loud and the light on the unit had to be covered up as it shone too bright into the room not making it dark enough at night. No wifi in the bure. Housekeeping - The housekeeping ladies were lovely but did not restock the beach towels each day. Having to ask for them each time got a bit frustrating as they only replaced the towels once during our entire stay and only after requesting them. After sometime we got sick of asking. Obviously there was a problem with beach towels getting replaced each day as reception didnt always have them either. We weren’t sure if the drinking water in the jug in the fridge was filtered water from the resort or Fiji water but it wasn’t replaced daily either. They say there is a lot to do on the island but there wasn’t that much on the activity board each day and didn’t see that many tours on offer. There was no cultural entertainment which was disappointing, but may be due to Covid but I understand other resorts had entertainment. The only singing we did watch was the nightly welcome and farewell songs from the staff at dinner. Staff were friendly but not as friendly as what we usually experience in Fiji. This was somewhat surprising here as we have always known the locals to be very friendly to visitors but on this island it did seem different, perhaps staff were shy or didn’t want to be there. They do work hard and work very long hours. We did notice when it was very busy at meal times there seemed to be less staff on. A shout out to the friendly and chatty Kevin as we liked his sense of humour and to the lovely Josie and a few others but forgotten their names. Food. Well this where it was very disappointing. We read reviews prior to arrival that the food was amazing, sorry to say we did not think it was great, just expensive and very hit and miss. The quality and quantity varied greatly from dish to dish and so did the temperature as some meals arrived luke warm or cold. The food was either very small and stingy portions and only some were meals were a bit bigger. Some were tasteless and quality was definitely lacking. No salt and pepper on tables. Breakfast - We were given a small plate with 2 or 3 small pieces of tropical fruit which I thought was very stingy as I love fruit. We also got 2 small pastries per person which were mostly hard or dry and the cupcake tops came apart. The choices on the breakfast menu were ok, some tasted better than others. Later found out you could order more than one if you were hungry. The “sides” were laughable, if you ask for a side of mushrooms you would get three tiny champignons, ask for bacon and it will be mostly a couple of small pieces and they were burtn, ask for grilled tomato and it will be one small slice and then bread tasted strange. The service was usually quite slow but once again they most likely needed more staff. Lunch - There were times when the chips with the burgers were overcooked and hard. Most of the lunch items like nachos and spring rolls were ok but nothing special. The lettuce was the worse, it was not a vegetable that ever looked good or tasted good. Dinner - These meals were definitely the most disappointing of all. The menu changed each night and food was very expensive for what you got. There just didn’t seem to be any consistency in quality, quantity and temperature. Some meals were very small eg. the lemon chicken thigh - a very small piece of chicken thigh with a blob of mash potato next to it and a few small pieces of vegetables underneath the chicken usually a bit celery and carrot. We stopped ordering the chicken. At times the meals were luke warm to cold. The mains we did like was the pastas, steaks and chicken schnitzel (it wasn’t breast as stated). The steaks were pretty good but once again with very little vegetables on a plate so if you were hungry you would have to order sides. The calamari wasn’t fresh because it was obvious it was from frozen. We usually do not eat 3 courses for dinner but sometimes we had to have an entree and a main and the occasional dessert. I cannot say a lot of the meals were delicious as most were quite bland and not much flavour. There should also be an all day menu with hot and cold snacks f you want to have something in between meal times. We came here to celebrate a special occasion and on the night we were celebrating is where the food and drinks was very disappointing. We ordered cocktails and they were so disappointing as the tasted like pre-mixed watery liquid with no alcohol, did not drink it all and didn’t want a replacement. We are sure there was no alcohol in them. Only ordered one other cocktail for the entire stay as we weren’t going to waste any more money. The entree, caesar salad was horrible and I couldn’t eat it and had to send it back to the kitchen, never ordered it again. The chicken thigh dish was exactly like I mentioned above, very small and not much on the plate and very average. We stopped ordering the chicken thigh after this. All I could think of was we had several more nights of not enjoying dinner as much as we should. This was the worse night and I expressed my disappointment to Patrick. He said he would speak the kitchen but never heard from him again. The staff didn’t seem to care about my concerns but then later in the night we were approached by a staff member who offered us a beach set up for the following night. We did do that and appreciate the set up on the beach but we did pay for our meals. We had different food which was better, but unfortunately the night we wanted to celebrate was already ruined. We are not fussy eaters but when you are paying a lot of money for food you would expect it to be very good standard but at this island the food was overall not great. Other guests we spoke to expressed the same opinions about the food. We heard from one couple who told us they had been to this island many times and said that the food here has never been great. WOW, so chances are food will never improve here. Definitely no value for money at this island. The main pool was nice with lovely views. House snorkelling wasn’t great as we only saw some cute fish. My partner enjoyed the scuba diving and was happy with the dive masters and the dives locations. We did request for information about scuba diving prior to arrival but never got a response. The resort charges an extra 4% credit card fee to your room account which is steep and really adds up so your better off paying in cash to avoid it. I would like to thank staff for the Happy Retirement cake you gave me on the last night, it was a lovely surprise. Also thanks to Patrick for organising the name tag on our front door of our bure, we didnt expect it. I honestly would of loved to write a glowing review of this resort but unfortunately I cannot do it. We have been to a lot of other resorts in Fiji over the years and have found the Fijians always so lovely and very friendly and always had great food and service. The food and service here was very different. When we stayed at our next resort it was a pleasant change to get great food, great service and really friendly staff and that is what Fiji is usually known for.. Although the island is beautiful and accommodation was nice I don’t think I would return as there are plenty other resorts to visit. Overall my ranking of this island is not what I wanted to give but unfortunately the food and service was not up to standard one would expect for the price you pay. Matamanoa you really need to lift your game as this is your biggest downfall.

I stayed at Matamanoa Island Resort for x6 nights in June and can safely say it's probably the most beautiful place I've ever visited in my life. From my room (I booked a beautiful beachfront bure), to the lovely and ever-accommodating and personable staff, the food (the menu every night at dinner was always incredible), the shoreline, activities, and the close-knit and intimate environment (I was travelling alone, but made many friends, with guests and staff). Genuinely, everything about my stay was perfect. Big thank you to Enoki, Kellara, Naomi, Eva, Anna, Josie, Keven, Siri, Albert, Gabby for being so attentive and making my trip special. I can't wait to return and see you all again. They say heaven is a place on earth, and that place is Matamanoa Island Resort! Vinaka! x

We were excited to finally be heading out to the islands for the first time. Upon arrival the staff are singing a welcome song and present a shell lei to you which is a nice touch. Check-in was done as a group and we all headed to our rooms. I had booked a sunset view Beach Bure with private pool. We were shown to our room which is spacious and as expected. PROS: - Adults Only - Spacious Rooms - Beautiful reef/water/beach - Sunsets - Pool area - Nice and friendly staff as expected with Fiji - Restaurant food (albeit sometimes missing ingredients) - Guided snorkelling and Snorkel Safari - Kayaking - Free use of snorkel/fins which you can keep for your entire stay - There are NO televisions and NO internet in the rooms (internet at reception area only) which allows for you to truly switch off There is a lot of coral out the front of the sunset beach bures if you swim out a little bit. The water is stunning and very clear on nice days! The general pool area is great, relaxing and inviting with many deck chairs available overlooking the ocean. There are limited things you can do on the island and only one restaurant and bar, which is expected for such a small resort. We stayed 4 nights but I think if there was to be a next time I would stay 2-3 nights. Some people in the resort were staying for 7+ days, each to their own. CONS: Don't get me wrong, we really enjoyed our time on the Island, however there are some things that you should be aware of. I didn't complain as there are bigger problems in the world and it is a Pacific Island so you have to be lenient and expect some things. I recommend taking insect repellent with you to Fiji - doesn't matter where you stay but mosquitos will bite from dusk. My comments below are simply to make travellers aware of what to expect and if the resort sees this then to hopefully help them improve, not to attack or make them feel we didn't enjoy our time as that is not the case. When we arrived there was rubbish in the fridge and the floor around the furniture needed vacuuming as there were left over crumbs and sand all around. Our room's plunge pool was green on arrival. Therefore we were unable to swim in it the first afternoon as it looked gross. I did not say anything but would have the following morning, but the pool cleaner came on his own accord to advise he was cleaning the pool and we would not be able to use it until the following day - therefore that's 1.5 days without fully using the room we booked. Pools should be cleaned on the same day someone checks out so the incoming guest only has that afternoon where it can't be used. The flies!!! Oh my goodness, the flies on the resort, there are so many! I noticed when walking to the room there were very full rubbish bins which were overflowing and couldn't close - perhaps if the island took more care with rubbish management there wouldn't be such a problem. Literally, every moment when you are outside you are trying to swat away flies - when you're relaxing on the deck chairs, sitting at the restaurant, lounging by the pool, having a drink at the bar - everywhere!!! Better fly management and some plants in the garden that flies don't like may help until it gets under control. Myna birds have also made their home near the restaurant. Therefore, you constantly have to listen to their noise and they would fly onto chairs and tables as soon as someone left. In desperate need of a decoy to keep them away. The restaurant often did not have all the ingredients for what was on the menu. For example, eggs benedict with ham, but there was no ham; or an omelette but there was only cheese and onion available; or a chicken wrap but there was no avocado. I get we're on an island but more food should be ordered to ensure the guests are catered for appropriately, especially considering there are no other options to eat. There have been reports on previous reviews about the salty water. We didn't find this to be a problem at all. Give them a break and if you've read reviews that mentions it then go prepared with water from the shop at Port Denarau. We did, but didn't drink it all and drank the island water. The guests on the island seemed to have an arrogance about them. We came from another hotel on the Coral Coast and found the guests all interacting with each other and the staff, hugging, laughing, just having a generally good time. At this resort the guests seemed to be a little more miserable and stand offish. It was weird. Obviously this can not be helped by the Island, totally out of their control. Would I go back? Yes.

We had high expectations for Matamanoa and had been dreaming of staying for years. Unfortunately it did not come close to what we expected. The resort trades on it's great location as it is not looked after very well and the service is not inline with the price. Many parts of the Island are neglected and even the resort was not very clean. The food was also not that great and would be a real challenge if staying for more than a few days. The staff are nice as usual in Fiji however clearly not given the resource and training to meet the standards advertised. So many other places are less expensive with much better standard of service. We loooove Fiji and come 15 times. We stayed in 5 different places during our two week stay. This was the only one I have ever commented on. Make your own decision!!!

We stayed in one of the east-facing beachside bures for our honeymoon. It was our first island resort stay and was a great time. We're glad we picked it. When you factor everything together, it was quite expensive, but I would still recommend it as a honeymoon destination. For us, a 5-night stay was the right amount. The setting was beautiful and the staff were very friendly as we got to know a number of them. One highlight was the bure. We found the layout and the design to be really delightful and classy, with nice woodwork, tapa, and rope designs. We chose not to use the AC the whole time (for energy-savings, but also because it was moderate temperatures), and having the fans going and shutters open allowed us to hear the waves at night, have nice breezes and wake up with the incredible sunrise in our window every morning. We didn't use the outdoor plunge pool and shower much, but did really utilize our lounge chairs and outdoor seating area lot due to the beautiful views. They have a neat desalinization water facility, so we were able to drink ocean water (and save $ on bottles). A major highlight was the band who played acoustic every night. They did numerous Fijian songs, but could equally hit beautiful harmonies on a lot of Western songs. Every night was special due to them. The meals were hit or miss for the price we paid. Some were really delicious, and sometimes the dinner menu seemed uninspired. We wish they would have included more local cuisine like rourou and taro. Fish was consistently good. Breakfast was solid with really good pastries and I order the same fish each morning. Certain nights the service was choppy and it seems it would help the waiting team to have more of a game plan for hitting each table on a consistent basis. We didn't do the meal plan and generally skipped lunch to save some money. We're not big drinkers so I can't say much about the drink service. As for activities, it was a perfect place for inexperienced snorkelers. Being able to practice right in the water out front of the beach helped us get comfortable and we enjoyed the Snorkle Safari and Guided Snorkel trips (good prices). Having no kids allowed, made all the activities seem designed for adults. We really enjoyed the late-morning activities with Oni. We were usually in bed before any late night activities. We did a massage and it was a fair price. We also appreciated the lack of wifi and TVs in our rooms. It helped to make more people come out and enjoy the common areas. The food/drink prices and the SouthSeaCruises tickets (now with surcharge) made it a costly trip, but I guess that makes sense with going to an island.

My first visit to Matamanoa, the rooms are fabulous - we had an oceanfront bure with plunge pool - we hardly left the site as it was quiet, stunning view and access straight onto the beach with gorgeous sunset. There was a problem with water while we were there due a broken pump - it water would turn off for a few hours each day. Quality snorkeling gear is available - and diving options available. The food was a little disappointing - dinner menu was trying to be a little too fancy and needed some simple options as well as the fine dining. Overall though the island is gorgeous - pay the extra and take the chopper with Island Choppers.

Matamanoa is itself a lovely island. We stayed in the far side Villas which were high quality with a plunge pool, privacy and great views. Only a 5 min walk to the main area but you can request a buggy ride if need be. Note Villas still had no wifi connection. No issues with noisy birds as others mentioned (stayed late April so getting to the end of their season). Main pool and social areas are very nice. Food was hit and miss and if the wait staff had a system it wasn't obvious, with breakfasts particularly shambolic. Lunch was good value but dinner felt expensive for the amount you get. Water is definitely salty, suggest you buy bottled if they haven't run out. A few staff were great but overall not as friendly/helpful as the other places we stayed in Fiji. Band was awesome and a highlight. For snorkel buffs house reef and surrounds not of the same quality of the Yasawa's or other Fiji hot spots. If you want to book an activity do it well in advance! We waited until the blackboard was put up in the morning outlining the activities for the day but found they were all already booked out. Overall a good stay but not our favourite.

An amazing stay in paradise! The staff made us feel very welcome, including a welcome and goodbye song and the resort has everything you need for a relaxing stay. But the highlight is definitely the natural beauty of the island- just stunning. This is an adults only resort and rhwre are no day-trippers, so very peaceful indeed. Everything was very well organised, including the transfer to the ferry, excursions, etc. The breakfast included in the room rate was amazing and the pastry chef baked special gluten-free bread and pastry for me on request, which absolutely exceeded my expectations. The food was very good, although not cheap, but we appreciate the logistics of catering on an island. This was truly an amazing stay and we hope to be back again soon!

We stayed here for four nights from 30 April - 4 May in one of the villas on the other side of the island away from resort. It was magical. The villa itself was a wow moment when we first saw it…so private and had day bed, plunge pool, sun loungers, outdoor shower and pretty large balcony overlooking the gorgeous mamanuca islands and some of the yasawas. Definitely recommend these rooms over all the others…room 50 and up (we were in 54). Inside was stunnnnnning…huge comfy bed, living area and large bathroom with high pressure shower, two basins and gorgeous Pure Fiji toiletries that were restocked daily. It’s easily the best “hotel room” I’ve ever stayed in. That view!!! The walk to and from the main resort takes about 5 mins and is gorgeous…we stopped each time to admire the views, water, marine life, stars, islands, etc…so, so pretty. The beach at high tide was pure tropical island bliss, with white sandy beaches and crystal clear water…if you can, time your stay for when high tide is about lunch time…although it’s still swimmable and very pretty at low tide. The food was mostly epic, with the kokoda being an absolute standout. Lunch was our favourite meal of the day here. Now if I was being suuuuuuper picky… The room was supposed to have wifi (which we chose specifically as I was supposed to do a bit of work) but it was broken when we were there…but that just forced us to chill without devices when at our room…and just relax, read or chat instead (and there’s excellent fast wifi up at the hotel). The restaurant doesn’t serve Pinot gris or Rose…just Chardonnay and Sav. So I’m glad we brought those duty free…but seriously, like, ‘first world problems’ right?? Mostly the staff were great, but there were quite a few times we requested stuff (condiments, drinks, food, equipment, activities, etc) that just never turned up so we had to ask multiple times, get it ourselves or do without…could have been a bit annoying but we didn’t let it get to us! On the whole, this place is absolute paradise and I’d more than recommend it to friends…I’d love to go back one day. When we left, we got our transfer to Nadi in a helicopter, which I’d 1000000% recommend! What a way to wrap up an epic holiday on the stunning Matamanoa Island. Thanks to Patrick and team, we had a blast 😊😊😊

Just returned from 6 nights on the island. On the positive side, the island really is beautiful with a mixture of sandy beaches and lush green volcanic rock center. Our bure on the beach was wonderful with excellent fit-out and a gorgeous outlook. Some things however, to be aware if you decide to visit- 1. The service in the only restaurant is absolutely terrible. Very poor processes and staff who appear they really don't want to be working there. For breakfast you might be waiting 30-40 minutes as staff walk past and ignore you. Breakfast is included but all dinner meals are $55 plus. This might seem manageable but despite being hungry we often just couldn't face the exhausting process of trying to deal with the staff. It seriously detracted from our holiday experience. 2. The drinking water is only partially desalinated. This means all the table water, coffee, meals and bread etc are very salty! We ended up buying our own bottled water and making our own coffee etc. The resort does not offers cappuccino or espresso - only filter coffee. Makes for a tough time for a coffee addict like me! 3. The resort offers expensive cocktails but they bear no resemblance to the real cocktail. They all appear to be just some sugar syrup mixed with various colouring. 4. The resort loads all charges by 4% 'credit card fee' so you need to budget for that in addition to the quoted prices. 5. There is just general mismanagement of the resort. For example, to get coffee for your room or beach towels requires going to the office, waiting in line and making the request. In every case 'we have run out of towels so can you come back later?'. This means you will need to spend up to an hour each day trying to get the basics. Add that to the time trying to get served in the restaurant and you will be spending a lot of your holiday on this rather than relaxing on the beach.

Bula Aix17 We are very sorry to hear you are unhappy with the service provided. We want to thank you for providing this feedback for our review. Your feedback has been forwarded to the management team. We are always looking for ways to better our service, and your feedback is an invaluable part of that process. In addition, just advising that the dinner meals are priced in Fiji Dollars $55. The drinking water is fully desalinated, Matamanoa has it's own desal plant, the Resort does offer Espresso Coffee when you order it. The Resort is charged a credit card fee from the credit card people for all transactions, all Companies charge for credit cards even when withdrawing cash from the ATM machines. Vinaka for your positive comments at the beginning of your post.
