If you speak Chinese, then you will be fine here. However if you don't, don't stay here. They aren't exactly the most helpful and their English is about as developed as a 2 year (not a smart 2yo)
If your in need of a place that can actually get you a taxi rain hail or shine, then don't go here.

The location is far north to the center. Nothing interesting around. except a small night food market on Quyang road in front of the McDonald. 15 minutes from the hotel. The rooms are very modern even if the assembly of the taps is lousy. There was a problem with the draining of the shower. There was no change service at the reception as it used to be at the past in most of the hotels in China. Most of the time the staff at the reception understood English, but there was time that nobody could help me. ,

Quite a pleasant surprise. Clean room and very good breakfast. Very basic in terms of hotel facilities but are enough for my business trip.
Room size is OK and the environment is quite quiet. Many shops nearby but mainly for local consumers. Still, there are department stores and Starbucks.
5-10 minutes' walk from subway station. For those who know the direction in Shanghai, they'll find this an acceptable location. For first-timers, this is probably not the best option. It's in the Hongkou district. Some tourist sights nearby but this is not downtown.
I was happy with what I got from this hotel.

The hotel is not in a bad location, but it is quite old and very neglected, the rooms are small and full of dust (I don't know if they are ever cleaned). And, at least in ours, the windows cannot be opened, so it is impossible to ventilate…. The breakfast on the terrace that I read in other comments was closed, you could only have breakfast in a breakfast room they have on the lobby floor, The breakfast is very average, with medium quality products and a little noisy, since each client is on their cell phone listening to different things and they play it at such a volume that we all hear about it... (unfortunately this is very common in China)🫣 The staff is simply correct. Of course if I return to Shanghai in this place I will not miss anything.

Pretty disappointing for several reasons. The first is because, depending on the shift, there may be no one at reception who speaks English. Not understanding “Problem in bathroom” is quite serious in such a hotel. We found a strand of hair in the sink pile very visible. It's amazing that a supervisor doesn't give the go-ahead for room cleaning. The air conditioning was not working well. We got a room with an air conditioning machine outside that made a lot of noise at night. The right breakfast. The regular location.

The location is very convenient, close to a Metro station (Yu Gardens) and to several local attractions, e.g, Peoples Square, Pedestrian Shopping Street and the wonderful Shanghai Museum.
· The access steps into the building are steep and a bit difficult for us older folk.

In Shanghai for a business trip for 4D3N. Am rather please with the overall experience. While the bathroom is small (about the same size as the common toilet in Singapore HDB), it still manages to give off this cozy feeling. The blackout curtains were definitely a bonus.
Transportation wise, it will be a bit hard to get a cab since the hotel is inside despite it being next to the main road. Fares start either from RMB14 or RMB16 depending on the cab you hail. Subway is another option. I would suggest taking a one-day travel card at RMB18 instead of a one-way trip card (especially if you wish to keep the card for memory). Each station has clear signs to tell you the next station and there is both Chinese and English translation.
Food. The price is reasonable with a meal costing RMB125 with 4 dishes and a 1litre jug of juice.
Places I visit. Went to the Bund in the day and night. Tian Zi Fang (Mikesi is a place for the sweet tooth with a wild streak of humor. Think condoms packaging but flavored sweets) is a way better option than Xintiandi. Most temples need to pay a fee to enter (went to Jin'an Temple). The whole stretch of Nan Jing Road, Yu Garden (Hu Xin Ting for their flower tea), and a few other places which my ex-Uni mate brought me around on the 3rd day.
Bring along the hotel name card so that the driver can easily find the place. Some recognize the road while the hotel for some.
Temperature is around 18 to 24 degree.
Visited from 4 to 7 May 2017.

Dear paddingtonjac, In name of the entire team here at SSAW Boutique Hotel Shanghai Hongkou, I would like to thank you for staying with us recently. It has been our pleasure having you here with us and to read your positive comments. Our guests have various ways of getting to the city center (taxi, bus and metro) and it is indeed very cheap. Your comments regarding our room and restaurant are very much appreciated and we now look forward welcoming you here again soon. Best regards, Niels Taal Operations Manager

Probably a perfect hotel for budget type chinese businessmen who love to smoke and hawk in the restaurant. Not for westerners... The whole property is simply grubby. Very few staff speak English. The staff in the restaurant don't have a clue about hospitality. Nothing is really clean. Lift up the place mats...yuk. The rooms and corridors stink of smoke. Aircon doesn't work. No porters, night staff rude. Nothing to do in the area.

A typical boutique hotel, close to the Bund and Yuyuan Gardens, rooms clean and comfortable, breakfast OK. Not at the heart of city but close to metro and even walking distance to the Bund. Close the a shopping district. Price-quality-room comfort were all satisfying. Stayed two years ago for 3 nights. Really recommend. Liked it.

We stayed in this hotel a few years ago (where it had another name, SSAW), and it is basically an OK hotel, in a decent but not perfect locations, with decent breakfast etc But the reason for the 3 stars is clearly temperature and house keeping. There is no way to keep house keeping out, they behave like they own the rooms - and they will walk in with no (or maximum 5 seconds) warning when you take shower, go for breakfast etc. Many times you may e.g. when going to breakfast want to keep house keeping out since you left valuables, PC's or similar on the table - but they don't care. Also, we had huge problems with temperature. Outside temperature was around zero, but the windows were really badly insulated and the windows may open automatically when entering the room due to air pressure.

Dear valued Guest, It takes about 45 minutes to reach our hotel from Pudong Airport by taxi. It costs about CNY180 so please ensure the taxi driver activates the taxi meter to avoid overcharging.

Dear Dkwwong1,
yes the hotel does. There is a little box in the bathroom with a tooth brush and tooth paste in it, and some more. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards,
