Good for those familiar with Shanghai and just need a place to stay for a few days. Expected more from all the positive reviews but was highly disappointed. Most of the staff are "cold" and unwelcoming. Definitely not worth the price! Could have stayed somewhere nicer, more comfortable, and more hospitable for same amount. Very limited breakfast (basically one sandwich)...

If you already know the French Concession well, have no fears of getting yourself around in Shanghai, and like the idea of staying in an old place with only 6 or so rooms, then this is the hotel for you. It's a pearl tucked away on Yongjia Lu, just near the Xiangyang Lu intersection. If want a hotel with concierge...

I stumbled upon this hotel while reading a review for hotels in Shanghai. I wanted something quiet and pleasant in the French Concession neighborhood. I found it! The Ke TangJian hotel was so cute. First, I had booked the attic single room and it was a loft room- adorable. However, I could not cool the room down enough so I...

The building only houses about 6 or so rooms therefore you are given a code to get in and out of the hotel to input on outside keypad. The hotel itself is a tiny lobby and the stairs, with a nice painted wall with a door that leads you to the restaurant. You go up the stairs and you start...

I stayed at the Ketangjian for over three weeks and had a thouroughly enjoyable stay, as did my colleagues who were there for some of the time. The staff are very friendly and helpfull and the resturant serves the best Thai food I have tasted in Shanghai. The location is perfect for walking and exploring the French Concession District

Being a Hong Kong people for 30 yrs, I can say I am "Chinese", but in my mind, we got no concept what a traditional Chinese building or what Chinese style design is. But after visiting KeTangJian, and......I know the way. Once walking-in this hotel, the first impression is COMFORT, the quiet atmosphere, warm lighting, music, etc....it leads u flying...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
