I switched rooms to one of the "updated" rooms (for a price) and thankfully escaped staying in one of the older rooms with the small bathroom and tub. Although the room I had was nice, it is TOO HOT in this hotel. The air conditioning barely works during the day, and they appear to switch it off at night -...

Shanghai has some pretty high caliber hotels, this isnt one of them. It's hard to say why but essentially; when staff don't care, rooms are tired, there's nothing really 'good' or exceptional in a 5 star hotel one of the world's boom cities.. why bother. The room was average if it was an airport hotel for a layover, breakfast was...

Stayed for a night because my first choice, Courtyard Xujiahui, was unavailable. It is odd to find this hotel described as luxurious. It is pretty dingy, the furniture is old fashioned, and the room layout is odd to say the least. There were so many couches in a small room which is very strange and makes the whole room very...

The Regal International East Asia sits in a premium location on Hengshan Road. It excels both in service and value. My room on an upper floor (19th) was as clean, well furnished, quiet and as comfortable as I could have desired. If the bed had been a little harder I would not have the slightest idea what could be improved!...

A very modern business hotel in this quirky district. Tree lined streets, plus views from the upper floors show the mixture between the Old Shanghai historical buildings, and it's modern thriving business hub. The staff are extremely helpful. Excellent buffet breakfast catering for both Asian and western tastes. Little coffee shop offering sandwiches and other "to go" items. Hotel is...

Due to delayed flight we arrived in the early hours but were processed promptly for quick access to our rooms. Our room was large but could have done with some updating, however no real complaints. We didn't get too much chance to get our bearings but a short walk to underground station. Breakfast was very good.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
