I was in Shanghai for my sister's wedding and stayed here because the rest of the family had chosen this hotel. It is an old mansion in the middle of the city. Everything seems to be the same as it was when the Moller family lived there. The gardens are prestine and the breakfast buffet was a great mixture of...

I had to run to Shanghai on a family emergency. This hotel was beautiful, comfortable, clean and became my home away from home for nearly three weeks. The room rate includes breakfast, and what a breakfast! You have a choice every day of Chinese food, British food, omelette station, etc. I never tired of the food and the service was...

I paid over $450 for the so called "the best suite" in the hotel for a night and what we got? 1. The staff never smiled. 2. There was only one bathrobe in the room. I called the receptionist for one more, but it never came. 3. The facilities in the room (decoration, shower, telephone, toiletries, etc) were out of...

The hotel is an interesting old property, with the modern changes made in keeping with it's old school theme. the dining room and grounds, giving the feel of living in another era. Staff are friendly and helpful (though their english is limited), the rooms are clean and well kept and the location works for shopping and is close to the...

Do not stay here unless you want to pay over the odds for a dirty hotel with poor service and no concept of business travel assistance. Very expensive and insects in the rooms. Awful service I had a poor check in and check out all of the front desk staff seem unable to understand much English and do not know...

I had booked 2 nights at the hotel at the end of a business trip in Shanghai. The problems started at check in, when the ladies at reception wanted me to pay a big deposit upfront, on my credit card. The room they put me in was tiny, and not very clean. What I didn't know is that the hotel...

The Moller Villa is an interesting, supposedly Scandanavian-style, mansion dating back to 1936. Unfortunately most of the guest rooms are in a less attractive ‘replica’ building behind the original building, hemmed in by a number of modern high rise buildings. The rooms themselves are comfortable enough and the location is convenient. Advertised rates are reasonable, a good breakfast is included,...

This is an interesting historical building. It looks like an old haunted castle with its hybrid gothic/tudor/late art noveaux architecture. The villa is now transformed to a luxury hotel - still a stay at a quite affordable price. A historical hotel indeed, built in 1036 by my countryman the swedish shipping magnate and horse-racing enthusiast Erik Möller, occupied by the...

This is an old Austrian/German type building almost right in the centre of Downtown Shanghai, pretty much surrounded by much more modern hotel tall glass tower eddifices. Found it by accident and just stayed the one night on business due to good rates on offer. So, the building is very old, very traditional, therefore you can't expect a 5 star...

The hotel has an old European feeling. A lot of wood inside the lobby and hallways, wooden staircase. Ceilings are quite low, rooms are not big but they are cozy with again a lot of wooden surfaces. Electrical outlets are far away from bed and in my room the European plug tended to fall out constantly. Bathroom is clean, toilet...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
