Stayed here for a week during tour. Had to switch rooms as the first was very smoky. Doors didn't seal into hallway so it was like having all smoke in every room combined. Was then moved to the 18th floor which was great as the traffic noise was lessened and no more smoke. Room was in much better condition as...

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as a part of a tour I took with my college. The lobby was nice and big and even if the hotel only has two elevators I never waited too long for one. But the kicker was the room. It was a little too small (at least 712 was). I looked at...

Not too sure about the location - had several taxis refuse to take me to it from the Bund area... eventually found one. There is an opaque glass wall between bathroom & room - kinda weird. Room was okay for cleanliness. Breakfast was okay. The bar at the hotel was expensive. The staff at the front & concierge was very...

The best thing about the Swan Hotel is the location. It is by the Honkou Soccer Stadium and right near the park with access to two subway lines, the 3 and the 8. The area around the hotel is the Sichuan Bei Luan shopping area with everything from Watsons to Pizza Hut to Starbucks. The room had wired Internet access...

Typically for a mid-price Chinese hotel, the building looks weathered and the aesthetics deteriorate the further inside you get. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the staff's helpfulness and professionalism, and for my purposes the location is ideal. If you are used to traveling in China or are able to cut the brand-name hotel umbilical cord, the Swan's shortcomings will...

This was listed on the Travelsphere tour as a 3 star hotel. It was excellent similiar to the Holiday Inn Express in the UK. Good location next to the park so you can get up at 6.00am and join in all the various morning exercises (we didn't) but some did. a good range of shpos and bars around you plus...

Hotel was clean and rooms nice but cold, it didn't feel like the heating was on at all! Not good in Shanghai in November! Also I didn't like the glass screen between bathroom and bedroom, although frosted it still felt like you could be seen! But food in restaurants good and breakfast very nice. Shops near hotel good too.

We stayed here for two nights in September as part of a Travelsphere tour of China (excellent tour by the way). I felt I had to write a review as the only other reviews on the site make it appear an awful hotel, in fact I was dreading staying there. I was pleasantly surprised, the hotel was clean, comfortable and...

We have just returned from China and our first stay was at the Swan in Shanghai. I would not recommend this hotel at all. The food was dreadful - in fact it defied description. We were very unhappy with all aspects of our stay in this hotel. The carpet in the room was grubby and everywhere looked as if it...

This hotel is comfortable and clean but clearly in need of a refit. The rooms are clean, bedding changed daily and hot water flasks topped up throughout the day. The rooms are bright and airy but in need of updating as there was paint peeling off the woodwork in places and the carpets stained in the corridors. There are no...

Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
