2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Xandari Resort & Spa offers the quintessential Costa Rica experience. The property’s forest reserve, with five waterfalls and miles of trails for bird-watching, provides the nature guests expect from a visit to Costa Rica. The landscaped gardens, the orchid house, and the farm all provide an additional abundance of tropical goodness. The Spa provides ample opportunity to unwind, to relax, to absorb the surrounding nature. All 24 villas, each uniquely designed and set within lush foliage, have spectacular views. And three times a day, our restaurant demonstrates the role of local cuisine in giving visitors an authentic sense of place.

First off, let me preface this review with the fact that we stayed at Xandari after our stays on Osa Peninsula and before we flew back home (had to take a COVID test in San Jose a day before flying back to the USA). We thought this hotel was pretty solid for a 1 night stay. The room was clean and was very spacious and had a great view of the city and mountains from the room and restaurant. The food was very good as well and the staff was very pleasant and accommodating. We did have a couple complaints about Xandari, with that being said. The hotel advertised that there was wifi in the room but we did not have any signal in the room and the wifi was very shoddy in the lobby/restaurant. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal being on vacation, however it was pretty important as we were trying to check on our COVID test appointments/results, checking in for our flight and staying updated on flight times. Our other complaint was that the waitstaff at dinner wasn't very attentive. We felt like we were being ignored and had to wave over the waiter to order more wine, meanwhile they spent all there time waiting on one other party that was there. We're sure this wasn't an intentional snub, but it did feel like were were a lesser priority. They had also advertised that the restaurant to be a place to sit and drink/socialize, however we had a similar experience trying to track down a waitstaff to check in to see if we needed anything. To end the review on a positive note, the concierge was helpful in arranging taxis for us to the airport and the grounds were very pretty was great views of San Jose.

We've enjoyed this hotel in the past and love to stay upon our arrival in Costa Rica. It has a beautiful and creatively colorful design. The views are incredible as are the grounds (although this time rain kept us from the waterfall trails). The open air restaurant is a joy (although Covid has reduced the number of vegetarian options). Our Villa Plus was huge and beautiful with great views of the valley. There should be bottled water provided but there was none. The staff including Alex, Lucy, and Luis were wonderful to work with and very helpful when American Airlines cancelled our incoming flight. My wife and I had great massages in the spa and she had a wonderful reflexology but mine was just a gentle foot rub. No slippers were provided the spa which is a huge oversight for any spa that requires movement around the facility. Overall we love staying here and will return next year as well. The value is too good to believe and well worth giving Xandari a try.

We first visited xandari in 2008 and had the opportunity to return in 2021. It did not disappoint. The path by the waterfalls, the amazing grounds, the fabulous staff - especially Oscar, Erica, and Alex - wonderful. A beautiful stay. Although there was a limited menu, the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. I would highly recommend this authentic and unique boutique hotel.

Review Xandari Very friendly accommodating staff at reception as well as the restaurant. Lucy, Kevin and Nancy were happy to help arrange excursions for our free day in San Jose and helped us choose one that was a good fit. Carlos and Karen met us at the airport to transfer us to the hotel and accompanied us on our excursion, providing interesting information about the area and recommendations for places to stop for lunch as well as fresh fruit along the way. Carlos also shuttled us to and from the airport multiple times as we moved around the country in between stays at Xandari. Always friendly and efficient Alex and Oscar took great care of us in the restaurant, accommodating our teen’s more particular palate and leaving us all happy and full. Delicious local flavors and ample portions at every meal. And we always felt greeted by an old friend. We had an issue when we misremembered our room safe combination and someone came immediately to help us. He was patient and friendly. After we checked out we thought we’d lost one of our belongings and reached out via email. Lucy followed up and showed concern, as well as eventual celebration when we found the item among our own mess later. A nice bonus is the resident cat who will gladly accept your attention and ear scritches.
