We stayed in four areas of Costa Rica over the course of our visit, and Villas Josipek was by far our favorite. We stayed in room 15, which is incredibly clean and modern. The view from the balcony was amazing! Our group had meals included which may have been the highlight of an already fantastic stay. The food was authentic and fresh while the staff was kind and professional. We would definitely stay here again!

We stayed 2 nights at Las Villas Josipek. We had a wonderful stay! The family that owns the hotel is so friendly and welcoming, and you can tell that they put a lot of love and care into their property. The property is beautiful and has a trail into the forest that you can walk (I didn't get to but heard it was nice). It is a little rustic - it's in the forest, so that's a given! - but was a very enjoyable stay. The food was delicious also. I would stay here again with no hesitation if I came back to the Arenal area.

We went on Christmas time to Costa Rica and first 2 nights were at Villas Josipek. It was very nice stay there. We had 2 rooms with 3 beds and kitchen in each. It's very good location close to all attractions and volcano.

Absolutely terrible stay. Stayed at the main house.
This place is plagued with bed bugs, mosquitoes, and ants crawling through the walls. All of our family had bites and rashes all over. Had rodent droppings show up each day of our stay. Every morning we were greeted by dead bugs on the floor. The internet and hot water were nonexistent. Shower was leaking into the bedroom. Can't turn on the lights at night otherwise you'll be under a bug attack. Had a cricket the size of a small cat show up in the hallway. Trash wasn't cleared once in 4 days. To top it off, a power outage left us in the dark with no AC, and no one from the staff was there to help. Guy in the reception was rude and disgusting, told us the owner doesn't speak English and will not help us, since this is all expected as the property is "located in the middle of nature". Complete rip-off-avoid at all costs. Explained everything to Expedia, but they did nothing about it. Do yourself a favor and DON'T stay here, it's a nightmare stay.

Sink falling off pedestal, TV so wobbly afraid it would fall, doors either won't open or close, electrical wires attached to showerhead, some mattresses were untraditionally thin (think summer camp mattress). Opening under some doors large enough to allow critters in. Some rooms were equipped with AC, others not.

We stayed in this property on 1-3 april 2015. This hotel was a nightmare for us.
Right off the bat we were so disappointed, the owner was trying to charged us more than what it was on hotels.com and when advised he said it was not possible the price was different. So we had to walk through a booking process to prove that he quoted us different price.
Secondly, we walked into our very dusty room, as if it was never occupied for a while. The room was missing lightbulb that wehad to ask to be replaced. There were spider webs in every corner. The washroom wall was dirty and yucky and to add to our horror, we found small cockroaches on our beds and myriads other dead bugs on the beds as well. cockroaches crawling around on the beds , no thanks !!
Thirdly, the next day , we ran out of toilet paper ! Seriously ?? And we again had to ask for it to be replaced.
I will not recommend this hotel to anyone, if you want to charge min US$ 75 per night in Arenal , this place needs serious attention and not just presenting customer with dirty, unequipped place. They have no right to charge this much if they can not even present customer with basic hygenic place to sleep in.
This place is also far from the downtown Arenal, be ready to spend min U$10 one way to town each time . So you will spend around $25 at leas per day.
We expected way more than this, this place is very traumatizing and beyond explainable.

My advice: don't bother to stay at this place, they will rip you off. Find a place closer to town , if not splurge at other lodge that will not scam you !

Response from Jorge B, Propietario at Villas Josipek
Responded 20 Apr 2015

We made a reservation well in advance--through a booking agency--to stay at the Eco Lodge Coter on the west end of Lake Arenal. This was a place we had stayed before and enjoyed. When we arrived, we discovered that the place had gone out of business and been more or less abandoned. So we stayed at a different lodge in Palma, but the cabin was only available for one night. It was fine, but not really what we're interested in since we wanted to be able to cook our own food and hang out on a porch with good scenery and interesting birds. We did some online research, and it seemed that the only place that had everything we were looking for was Villas Josipek. When we drove out to see it, we were surprised at how few other lodges there were in the area. This is a much less touristy area than the north side of the lake or Palma/Fortuna. To us, this is a bonus. The cabins are small but quite adequate. The amply equipped kitchen opens onto the covered porch, making it easy to cook dinner and eat in the open air. The botanic garden onsite is AMAZING. So is the trail system that leads out into the rainforest. We are birdwatchers, and the birds on the grounds are phenomenal. On the first evening, we saw two species of parrot, both toucans, parakeets, oropendulas, woodcreepers, woodpeckers, two species of antbird, hummingbirds, the long-billed gnatwren, warblers, and sundry other interesting species. There is a large group cabin with beds for up to 14 people with a huge kitchen downstairs, two bathrooms, and a wrap-around upstairs balcony. The pool looks very inviting as well. If you are interested in birds and plants and enjoy cooking for yourself, this place is perfect. There are restaurants in the area, but we passed on that. It's not far from Fortuna, and it's also close to the back entrance to the national park. The owners are really nice and helpful. The only drawback is that it's close to the main road, which means that the traffic noise is loud at times. However, that also means it's easy to get to, unlike the Eco Lodge Coter that we originally wanted to stay at.

We were staying in San Jose & rented a car to see all the beauty up in the mountains ans since it was quiet a ride away,we decided on maybe finding a cabina(cabin) My friend says is you guys see something that catches your eyes just let me know and I'll stop there. So he sees this cabina that's hidden but stand out and then we see a parrot on a tree in front of this house,so we park go in & wait for someone to come out and we hear a voice that says Buenas Tarde en que los puedo ayudar..So we asked if there's any vacancy & she said yes their is,would you like to see the cabins? As we walked around I love the place even more!!And we said great we'll stay one night then we ended up staying a 2nd night...Such a beautiful & quiet place total relaxation!!!! There's a tree next to the pool that early morning tuscan birds gather it's amazing to see so many in that one tree.Even if you want to stay one night and continue on,you wouldn't regret It!!!! Suhey & Edgar made our stay a Pleasant One....And when we visit Costa Rica Again,We will Definitely make a special trip to Villas Josipek=) A

Rustic, clean cabins with simple, well equipped kitchens with gorgeous natural view & delightful hosts. Attached botanical garden with medicinal herb garden an unexpected bonus as well as trails into jungle. Pool was a joy. Perfect for our family reunion. We stayed an extra day because we enjoyed it so much. Large house looked lovely as another option. Car or paid transportation necessary.

We were blown away by the natural beauty here. This was our first two days of a Costa Rica vacation so we had no idea what to expect. Our concern was that there might not be restaurants in this little village. No problem, we ate well in the open air restaurant just down the highway. Be bought breakfast the night before at the local grocery, and then ate in on our patio while watching the peacocks walking around. The quite nice pool overlooks lots of hill/valley greenery. There is a private set of marked trails behind the villas with the little tags showing name, species, family on many plants.

Much better than a backpacker place, but without a restaurant it is hard to call it a hotel.
