We were lucky and had great views both of the volcano and of all the birds and animals who come and feed in the grounds. We enjoyed the good breakfast, large comfortable room, and buffet supper with good choice in all courses.

Arenal is a beautiful place, and the Observatory Lodge couldn't be better placed, sitting just underneath the volcano.
The rooms are very comfortable, the restauirant served some of the best food we had in Costa Rica, and was surprisingly not too expensive.

This is a very nice place to spend time. The accommodations are good for being at the foot of the volcano in what used to be an observatory for scientists. Spent two nights in a Smithsonian Room - good location close to the office and...More

We stayed in Casona. The lodge that has 5 rooms and shares 2 bathrooms. There were2 coffee makers in the communal area with coffee packets on our room. I did make coffee in the morning before I went to breakfast. I used tap water in the dining room there was a large water cooler which we filled our water bottles that I brought along. There were also water bottles you could purchase.

The La Fortuna Waterfall is about a 30-minute drive from the lodge. If you will have a rental car, driving yourselves would be the easiest way to get there. Alternatively, a cab to the waterfall would cost around $30 each way. There are also several tour companies that offer trips to the waterfall and could pick up from the lodge if this is something you would be interested in.
We look forward to your upcoming stay and please feel free to ask any additional questions you may have.

The lodge is pretty far away from town. I think that you can to and from town by taxi. However, I'm not sure there is much reason to go to La Fortuna in the evening. The attractions of the area are nature and adventure tours, not the night life. However, if you like to be in or near a town, you should probably consider another place to stay.
