The location is absolutely perfect! The views of the volcano and the lake are breath taking! Everyone in the hotel is extremely nice and helpful! The rooms are big but not extremely clean, unfortunately (There was an empty bottle of water under the bed, probably from the previous guests).

This hotel is a genuine one-off and a twitchers paradise. The access road is poor and this does hinder going out to La Fortuna town to eat, although the daily fixed price diner with wine included was good value. Would have loved to have stayed longer (we only stayed two nights). The volcano was covered with cloud for the duration...

We were in the area three years ago and only saw part of the volcano lava flow so this time we thought we could see it all by going to the observatory, but unfortunately, we discovered it lstopped flowing about three years ago so we did not see the red lava at night like everyone told us we would see,...

The Arenal Observatory Lodge is a genuine experience. Not a tourist trap. The view from our Smithsonian room of the gardens and the volcano will (hopefully) stay with me forever. We loved the morning Nature tour and walking the trails on our own. Listening to Howler monkeys and viewing a coati and the many, many Orapedola flying back and forth...

I was a little hesitant about staying at AOL at first, since it does not have airconditoning and the road is a hindrance to venturing out. But now I would not consider any other hotel in the area. The location, trails and exemplary service and attitude make Arenal Observatory Lodge the ONLY hotel worth staying at. My family went on...

Pros: - location - close to volcano, great view from room. We had the Smithsonian. close to forest, very good access to hiking with reasonably well marked trails, enjoyed eating fresh guavas picked off trees (probably in season in April) Nice pool (cold but we did not mind) and hot tub. We also liked the "free" guided hike on day...

Stayed at Arenal Observatory Lodge for just one night while going through to Monteverde. The place was great - friendly and attentive staff, decent restaurant (breakfast included in room price), small games room and museum about the volcano, and lots of viewing platforms for the volcano and wildlife. The rooms were nice and clean and the grounds were spacious and...

My favourite property in costa rica! Must stay place in arenal area. Beautiful empty tracks and vulcano view doesnt get better!! Rooms are spacios, clean, high standard. Perfect place for spending a weekend just at the property - walk, chill by the pool, enjoy empty spaces with hardly any people.

Activities at the hotel include hikes to the waterfall or to explore Cerro Chato (an extinct volcano with a small lake in the crater), horseback riding, bicycling through the trails, enjoying a refreshing swim in our pool, or simply relaxing with a massage in our SPA. The hotel is well located to serve as a base for a variety of excursions such as: Cano Negro Nature Refuge, hot springs, Venado Caves, Canopy Tours, Arenal Hanging Bridges, Fishing, White Water Rafting, Canyoning, Biking etc. It also serves as a very interesting stop before heading on to Monteverde Cloud Forest or to the beaches of the Pacific coast. Unless you do not mind eating the same food (delicious) everyday, you would need a car to drive around and preferably a 4x4 as the last 4-5 kms are quite rough.
