My husband and I just got back from visiting La Fortuna. We loved our stay at the Volcano Lodge. The location was so secluded and safe. The rooms were very clean and the property well maintained. The breakfast every morning was fresh and gave you a nice variety. We even ate at the restaurant for dinner and both enjoyed our food. The staff was well attentive and friendly. The location was perfect. A close drive to all of our planned activities. The hot springs were just a bonus!

The grounds are beautiful and we had no problems with the staff except one. The room was ok, not great, not terrible. Please know if you get a thermal room, the hotel can adjust the temperature of it. Ours was way too hot when we got there and they lowered the temp. The ugly part is the public thermal pool. I was hospitalized after arriving home from an internal illness that is passed through dirty public pools. I spent 2 nights in the hospital. The pool by the wet bar was lukewarm at best. There was stuff you could visibly see floating in the water. Be aware and be careful, I was very sick and this is the only place I could’ve possibly gotten it from based on the time frame and my activities prior to diagnosis.

Response from Grupo La Palma Hoteles, General Manager at Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience
Responded 1 week ago
Thank you very much for your visit, and also for your comments! As you observed, our hot springs are close to the vegetation and other larger trees. What someone can consider as murky, is the natural color of the thermal waters: the thermal waters are loaded with minerals, and this causes their coloration depending on the concentration to change between moss green, beige and even blue. What could be considered as algae, are actually a variety of filaments and seeds that are deposited, after falling from the trees. Our hot spring pools go through a constant washing and filtering process, as well as we ensure through laboratory tests, that they are suitable for swimming. As in any body of water, it is not recommended to submerge or open your mouth (in fact there are signs, as part of a regulation of the Department of Health of Costa Rica). We do not question the situation that you experienced after your trip, but if these situations were recurring, many reviews would say the same thing. Kind Regards!

The hotel is huge and beautiful. Rooms are spacious, clean and we had a great view. We loved the restaurant! Breakfast was just incredible and having some drinks in the afternoon by the pool was so nice. Staff was super friendly and helpful. La Fortuna is easy to get around and you can book great tours and attractions when you get there, there are many agencies and the hotel also provides this service. Highly recommend staying some days in La Fortuna, especially if it is in Volcano Lodge.

Excellent stay here! Beautiful room, tons of beautiful pools and hot tubs to explore. Hot tubs are open all day and night. Incredible views of the volcano from the pool. Complementary breakfast was excellent, staff were kind and helpful. Close to town for dinner. Only comment, the plunge pool outside our room was actually too hot to use.

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and Volcano Lodge was the first place we stayed at. It also had the largest and most comfortable room of the three places we stayed during our week vacation. Our room was a "Superior Room" with 2 double beds.It was rustic but charming, like a private bungalow with a private patio. The bathroom was large enough for two people to use it comfortably, with towel rack and several hooks to hang towels or clothing, and a hair dryer. The rain shower head was great! There was complimentary shampoo. conditioner & lotion. The lighting was great too. In the main bedroom was a coffee maker with complimentary Costa Rican coffee! There was also complimentary wine, beer, and water, as well as several bags of snack foods. The air conditioner worked great against that Costa Rican heat and humidity, and there was also a ceiling fan! Plenty of closet space, a small refrigerator that was very cold and a safe for valuables. The beds were pretty comfortable and we slept well. The grounds were gorgeous and well-kept, full of tropical flowers and foliage. The thermal pools were amazing and very relaxing. The main pool was large, clean and the perfect temperature. Our complimentary breakfast was a full breakfast with traditional Costa Rican foods as well as the breakfast foods we are used to in The USA. There was also a variety of amazing fresh tropical fruits, breads and delicious pastries and sweets. I also saw a couple varieties of dry cereal offered. The restaurant Sura Bar & Bistro was open for lunch and dinner as well, and we ate two delicious fresh seafood dinners there during our stay. All staff were friendly and very helpful. The location is close to all the attractions and adventures, as well as the town of La Fortuna with it's array of souvenir shops, restaurants and bars.

The Lodge was very nice, it has many termal pools, the breakfast was varied and good and the room was spacious. You can also see the Volcano from there. I would stay again! The only thing is that it is far from the center, not walking distance.

Stayed here to check out the hotel. It was an OK hotel, with some great hot springs, but the water was so cloudy with algae or something I was concerned about it. The hotel is close to Los Lago and Baldi which both have very clear water. It is a bit out of town which was fine by me. The hot springs have a main area, then the pool (cooler water), then a private jacuzzi area and then lower springs that you can control the bubbles. The room was OK, not as nice as Los Lagos for prices that are similar. The wifi was horrible. I could not get it to work in the room. Public areas were fine, but I tried to sit on the back porch and get some work done, but couldn't connect. The separate springs areas are nice, and the design good, but all of them had water that was so cloudy you could not see the bottom. I really wanted to try the hot tub concept, but just wasn't sure so did not go. I will attach a picture so you can see how bad it was. The morning was fine, so I suspect it gets stirred up during the day and then settles down at night when most go to bed. This to me was in contrast to Los Lagos where they had the main pool drained when I saw it as they were scrubbing it down. A decent hotel, great staff as is normal through this beautiful country, but no wifi and cloudy pools are a no go for me.

Volcano Lodge is an older property that was creatively designed and has been adequately maintained. I stayed two nights in different rooms. The first night was in a basic room with two double beds. That room was great so I decided to book a second night in a junior suite. The junior suite was a bit bigger, with two large chairs, a larger bathroom, glass instead of paper cups, and a private hot tub in back with a clear view of the volcano. The tub never got “hot” but was just tepid. There was a switch to turn on the waterfall fountain and a sign telling us to keep our clothes on, it’s not THAT private. Both rooms had effective blackout curtains, good independent AC units, convenient parking, and easy access to the hotel’s main attraction, the elaborate thermal baths and restaurants complex. When I was there the thermal baths were popular. The hottest bath at the top of the three layered structure was actually so hot that most people did not attempt it, but it was the perfect temperature for me. The place is very popular with romantic young couples, and the playground was great for the younger guests for whom romance was still unknown. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is that the fitted sheets on the beds in the junior suite were covered with pilling – the little balls that form over time in the nap of some fabrics. The pilling was so bad that the sheets were abrasive and kept me up that night. I felt that for the prices charged they should replace the sheets before they get so bad. The staff was very friendly, the restaurant was good for both breakfasts and the very tasty vegan stuffed eggplant dinner. If I return, I’ll check the sheets immediately and ask them to be replaced if they are pilled.
