We stayed at Pez Vela for 4 nights. While it’s located about a 10-12 minute car/taxi ride from Coco, once you arrive you don’t have to leave. The property has numerous private villas spread out through the mountain, all facing the ocean. Near the restaurant Maracuya, there is also 3 joined pools (including 1 Infiniti pool) and a beach area. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They’re happy to help anything you need. It was just 2 of us and we had an excellent time, however I would recommend this more for groups, bigger families or 2 couples because the villas are the size of a house with multiple rooms, bathrooms, full kitchens and a decent amount of space to spread out. It’s also bit outside of town so if you don’t have a car, it’s easier to just stay on the property which was also fine by us. We had a few issues with taxi’s charging us all sorts of different prices for trips and we’re reluctant to get into them towards the end of our trip. They’re not unsafe, however there are drivers that want to take advantaged. The trip from Pez Vela to town is $10, if you’re lucky to find an Uber available It’ll cost you about half of that, which we really preferred. We learned it’s better to confirm the prices of taxi’s as you’re getting in so it’s clear on what the cost will be. The villas are very clean, although you’ll want to bring all the essentials you’d need in an Airbnb type of stay - any food/coffee you want to prepare, soap/toiletries for the bathrooms and laundry detergent if you’d like to wash clothes. Cesar and Abi at the office are very helpful, we really trusted them to guide us and they didn’t disappoint.

We recently stayed at the Bahia Pez Vela Resort and had a wonderful experience. The staff is exceptional. They will make any arrangements you need. The restaurant was also very good. This is a terraced property so some villas are up on the hill overlooking the bay; others are right on the beach. We stayed in one right on the beach and loved it! Everything was very accessible and the view was stunning. We were able to see a family of howler monkeys several days in the trees off to the side of the villas on the hill. This was the most relaxing place we have ever stayed. The villas are also very nicely appointed. The resort was quiet and serene. There was music from the restaurant some evenings, but it was never too loud. We will definitely come back to this well kept secret place!

VRBO Review We had a great time at the Bahia Pez Vela Resort villa 11. The resort is gated with a guard, beautifully landscaped, 2 great pools, and an unbelievably good restaurant. It is hard to believe that a resort this nice can be only accessed by lousy roads…but that just adds to the Costa Rica adventure. We owned/operated a home on VRBO for several years so feel qualified to tell you that the people who own/operate this home on VRBO are real Pro’s. I will cover some topics that might benefit someone trip planning. Villa 11: Ideal. The home was clean and in great condition. All the beds & couches were comfortable and the patio furniture made for great outdoor living. The complex is built on the side of a steep hill. If anyone in your group has mobility issues, only consider the 6 homes fronting the beach. Villa 11 had easy access to the pool/restaurant and the beach. We followed the recommended policy of turning OFF air conditioning in rooms that were not occupied and it worked great…the individual units cooled a room instantly. The home has everything that you would have in a beach house—sand toys, snorkel gear, board games, cooler, beach chairs and umbrellas. The kitchen was a very comfortable place to cook. Everything was in very good working conditions…I think the frying pans were new. Restaurants: PapaGaya Pura Vida. This is the resort restaurant open for lunch/dinner. Excellent. Quite gourmet. Excellent service. Beautiful setting. Fairly pricey but worth it. If you planned to stay in the Guanacaste area, I would skip the car rental and use taxis. Father Roosters. 5-minute drive & on the beach…in fact the tables are all outdoors on the sand. Food was very good. Less expensive. La Caveja Pizza. Really good pizza. Very, very thin crust. The crust is so thin that a large may not be enough for 2-people. Inexpensive. Groceries: Auto Mercado was a very nice grocery store. Car Rental: We rented 2 cars from Europcar. When you get through the airport process, go directly to the street and look for the Europcar rep and shuttle van. Rental was reasonable but the insurance was pricey. Our credit card covered insurance for the car but liability insurance was $35/day/car. It is necessary. The roads are full of bikers, people walking, animals, and cars passing each other. Beach: The black sand is like powder. The hotel provides food/beverage service at the beach. The resort staff will carry down beach lounge chairs or a table/chairs for you. The water in December was chilly but comfortable. The tides are probably in the 4’-5’ range. You can hike on the rocks and explore the adjacent beaches when the tide is low (wear sturdy gym shoes). Snorkeling is best at high tide. The visibility was only about 10’-15’ but we saw quite a few fish and one small moray eel. There were some tiny jellyfish that stung but not very frequently…suggest wearing a long sleeve sun shirt in the water. According to one of our dive masters, our beach is one of the best shore dive locations in the area. SCUBA/Boating: We did 2 days of diving. Rocket Frog was the first day. Large dive boat, about $115/person with full gear rental, gone from 8:00-12:00. Dove 2 sites close by Del Coco that were nearly identical—80’ bottom, rocky bottom with hills, almost no live coral, descent amount of aquatic life, 20’ visibility. Enjoyable but average dives. Serena’s Diving. Our day with Serenas was a completely different concept than our Rocket Frog dive day. This was a private charter. Cost was $650 + gear rental. We had 4 divers and 1 non-diver but the boat was large enough for more people. Scott Jackson is the operator. Scott is exceptionally good at email communication. They do not have a dive shop, so after getting all the height/weight of each diver, they board the necessary gear. Their wet suits we much newer than the ones we wore from Rocket frog. The boat was very comfortable with plenty of roof for shade…no onboard bathroom but that was not a negative for us. Because this was a private charter, Scott asked us how we wanted to structure our day on the water. We opted for diving followed by fishing. Scott, another dive instructor, and the boat captain picked us up at our beach at 7:00. We dove a better site a bit further from El Coco. We saw more fish…which is partially attributed to fewer divers in the water. During our time between dives we were dropped off at a beautiful secluded beach. After our second dive we ate the lunch that we brought. Scott provided water, cookies, cut up watermelon & pineapple and a few beers. Next we did some fishing. We trolled for a couple of hours and caught one tuna. They would have gone much longer but some of our group had had enough water time. We were dropped off at our beach shortly after 2:00. Serenas had a couple of red flags for me (no shop and no credit card capability) but my worries were unfounded. We paid our deposit with PayPal and the rest with cash after we were dropped off. I would highly recommend Serenas not only for diving, but for a day on the water to include sight seeing, snorkeling, secluded beach time, fishing. They were fully equipped for catching big fish. From the boat we saw dolphin, schools of manta rays, sea turtles, rays jumping and doing flips, schools of bait fish trapped on the surface by tuna. Suggestions: 1. Have handy your flight numbers, house/outdoor gear closet codes, resort name & address, and restaurant names so you don’t need to continuously look this information up. 2. WiFi. The router is located in the laundry room. When the WiFi stops working, pull the power cord on the router out to reboot the system. 3. Covid Test. Schedule your exit Covid test as soon as you arrive at the resort with the concierge. The medical people come to your home. 4. Don’t leave any food unattended outdoors. The birds will get into it.

We had a fabulous girls' get together at this resort! We stayed in Villa #6 which is very well appointed and comfortable. The beach is gorgeous, with black sand and gentle waves. The resort service is quick and attentive, the pool is absolutely stunning and the restaurant is excellent. The plants and birds are incredible and we really enjoyed walking in the area and taking in the stunning views. Highly recommend going!

My family and I had an amazing stay at villa number 33/Flying V villa in June 2021. The photos don’t do justice to how incredibly beautiful this place is. The breathtaking view of the blue ocean can be seen from the patio, the bedrooms and other parts of the house. The house itself is so elegant, the decorations fit together in one theme, making you feel calm, peaceful and happy. The house is very clean and equipped with all the supplies you would need not only in the kitchen but in the bathrooms and even in the laundry room. The Infiniti pool is a short walk from the villa. Every interaction with the owners was pleasant. Both Verda and Neil were exceptionally helpful, giving us tips on where to go, what to do, what to see, where to eat, etc. They provided us with directions and travel guides which were all helpful in deciding where to go especially when you have a limited time with so many places to see. We enjoyed the Maracuya restaurant which was right on the beach. We had a chance to see the owners’ second villa which was being occupied by friends of ours, located right on the beach. Our family could not decide which villa was more beautiful so we plan on renting their second villa next time we come to Bahia Pez Vela. Both are super gorgeous! The owners made sure that we had a great time and that we did, more than we could say!
