Peaceful and secluded resort on sparkling black sand beach near Playa del Coco. Outstanding staff, kudos to Abi and Cesar in the office - they coordinated everything for us (airport transport, car rental and tours). All were seamless and made for a perfect vacation. We stayed in Villa 5, newly renovated and close to community pool (we always could get a chaise), restaurant and beach (to address previous poster, yes, anyone can access beach as all beaches public, as they should be so everyone can enjoy. We never felt beach area was crowded.) Restaurant onsite is fabulous ! Some nights they offer live music. Cocktails are divine and we had some of best meals there. Thanks to Heisson and Lizette (as well as chef, bartender and rest of staff) who took good care of us. They put their whole heart into being gracious hosts and it shows. Heard the howler monkeys and saw an ant eater, many beautiful birds and a coati (?) on the property. Yoga overlooking the beach with Simone (for small fee) was a fantastic way to kick off vacay! Good snorkeling off to right on beach around the rocky shore. About 15 minute drive to Playa del Coco for outing or dinner and 5 minute drive to Father Roosters. Yes, driving on the narrow roads is not for the faint of heart with bicyclists, pedestrians, dogs wandering about…but that’s part of the experience. Secured entrance gate and roaming security gave us peace of mind. Pure Vida !!

Bahia Pez Vela was a pleasant resort and I enjoyed my stay, but it is not as good as the reviews would lead you to believe. Pros: You have your own villa with 3 bedrooms, there was a small private beach; it was secluded; the staff was friendly; there were adequate kitchen supplies and furnishings; the pools were nice; there was a restaurant. The price is reasonable for 6 guests. Several of the villas at the top of the hill and the beachfront villas have nice views. The wifi worked well. If you have kids or want to go to the beach a lot stay in a villa close to the beach. Cons: Smaller beach - could get crowded and more non-guests than guests; this place is off the beaten track - v. bad roads so rent a larger car; difficult to walk the area without effort and being a serious walker; the hill in the resort is very steep; if you stay at a villa at top of the hill you will likely drive down or just skip the beach entirely and stick with the pool; If you want a view and don't want to be exposed to everyone stay at a villa at the top of the hill. Few of the villas at the bottom have really good views (even the ocean view ones are often v. limited views); the beachfront villas have great views but can be very exposed and lack privacy; many of the villas look rundown, and the furniture was too, but it was all functional and didn't really impact stay (although not always the most comfortable); we had maintenance issues (most small, some more serious like with appliances); the restaurant food was OK; it is a drive to the grocery store and most outside restaurants; the price is high for 2 guests. There are no extra amenities, like a gym. Some nights it was pretty noisy up to 10 or 11 pm. Overall, if you are looking for a more secluded location with pools and a beach, and a place to yourself and don't mind driving on bad roads for groceries, shopping, or restaurants, this is a good place to stay, esp. if you have six guests.

We stayed in Villa 41, the only studio unit in the resort, for a week in January. It was absolutely beautiful! The unit is near the top of the resort (more on that later) so the view from the little patio we had breakfast on every morning was absolutely stunning, with clear view of the Gulf of Papagayo and Ocatal Beach. Every morning there would be Magnificent Frigate Birds, Pelicans and Vultures circling over the ocean. Magpie Jays and the occasional iguana would sneak around and various other colorful bird species would zip past. The unit is a single room studio with full sized fridge, induction hotplate, microwave and coffeemaker. Two ceiling fans and a mini-AC on the wall over the bed provide excellent cooling. There are several windows and the unit is very light. Water pressure is fairly low, so the shower unit is electric and provides a boost of pressure and temperature so the shower is definitely adequate, if not stellar. The resort itself is on the side of a steep hill, which is great for views! If you are in units at the top of the resort, the walk to the beach is very steep downhill on the road and a pretty difficult climb on the way home! It's only about a 10-15 minute walk, but older or out of shape folks would find it hard to make (if available, the restaurant delivery van can pick you up for a small fee). The resort is about 15-20 minutes from playas del Coco and is pretty difficult to find. The road there is rough and does travel through a pretty densely populated area where there are people walking around, on bikes, motorcycles, etc most times of the day. It would a stressful drive if you were renting a car in Costa Rica for the first time. Thankfully, all our cab drivers knew where it was and a trip to Coco cost about $20 (including a nice tip). The cab from Liberia airport was $70. The beach is semi-private (there were rarely more than 10 people on the beach), small, black sand and absolutely gorgeous! Tall trees provide ample shade and staff will bring down lounge chairs if you ask. Maracuya has a large, multi-level infinity pool available for resort residents. There is also an infinity pool available for the units at the top of the resort. The staff was universally friendly and helpful and restaurant Maracuya is excellent (better at dinner, no breakfast available). Highly recommended! It's a great room away from the dust and bustle of Coco beach although it does require some effort to get back and forth.

Our Villa was clean, well equipped with everything we needed and the atmosphere was incredible. We stayed in Villa 14 which had it's own private pool and the jungle right beside us. The view of the ocean was also stunning. Although the kitchen was a little dated, this house and the layout is perfect and very spacious. This house was the only place we stayed at that had an area to hang bathing suits and towels! So handy. The washer and dryer work very well. If we return to Costa Rica, we won't bother looking at any other resorts as this place has it all if you are looking for a quiet, serene getaway. The restaurant by the ocean and pools, The Maracuya, is also exceptional! The reception staff were very friendly and we felt very safe in the resort. I also had a wonderful massage in our villa. Of the four places we stayed at , Bahia Pez Vela was by far our favourite spot.

We just spent a week in Bahia Pez Vela. What an amazing place. Besides the spacious 3 bedroom villa where our family could spread out comfortably, that had just the most amazing views of both the hillside and the ocean. Soooo perfect for morning coffee and evening wine! The beach is just SO beautiful! Very few people, such sparkly beautiful black sand, love the tidal pools for taking a look at all the little lives and activity in there. Abigail and Cesar were just beyond helpful with planning tours and anything else we needed!

My daughter-in-law, 2 young granddaughters (18 months & 4 1/2 years), and I just spent a most amazing month at Bahia Pez Vela Resort. The Maracuya Beach Front Restaurant food was delicious and the restaurant staff were amazing, kind, and gracious. The Resort Staff, Cesar, Abi , and all the maintenance folks were 100% helpful and so responsive and kind! It has been a great adventure and much fun! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts...the women of Villa 16!

Loved my stay in the casita. The view was beautiful from my kitchen window. Excellent amenities. The reception staff was very helpful and I can't wait to go back! I love the pool and found the shuttle service back up the hill very helpful. Very comfortable bed and AC worked well.

We spent nearly 5 weeks here as a summer getaway. It's a truly lovely place. Beautiful views, amazing pool, private beach, great restaurant, and near a lot of fun things to do in CR. What made it the most amazing was the staff in reception and the restaurant. They are truly amazing people who really make you and your family feel special, even though they see so many people come and go. There is also a troop of howler monkeys who come and go. We got lucky and they were hanging out in the trees near the beach a couple times. There's never a guarantee to see them up close, but you can hear them in the distance. A couple things to note - having a rental car is really helpful. It's about 15 min to the main street in Coco, or you'll pay a lot for vans to come pick you up for excursions or taxis to come get you (not in the greatest condition). Also, the roads up to the resort are not in great shape so be prepared. We didn't have four wheel drive, but in general having four wheel drive is useful in Costa Rica if you will go off the remote beaches or explore the mountains.

Bahia Pez Vela is a pretty and secluded resort with terraces of townhomes that overlook a calm black sand beach. The resort is a short drive from Playas del Coco so having a rental car is helpful. Driving in CR is part of the adventure, after all. We mixed exploring the region by car or boat with days at the resort. The concierge staff (always responsive and helpful) arranged transportation for nights on the town in Coco. $15-20 each way for a taxi. The food and service at the Maracuya Beach Club (the resort’s bar and restaurant attached to the main pool) are exceptional. The bartender mixes terrific tropical cocktails. The staff is friendly and professional. We ate most of our meals there during our stay. Our townhome was well-equipped and included its own pool. There was plenty of space for our family to spread out. Some of the townhomes have been updated more recently than others but ours was great nonetheless. The washer dryer was nice to have and it was so easy to get food and supplies at the Automercado in Coco. Highly recommend.

We had a great time! The landscaping is absolutely amazing. Our family of 6 had a wonderful time lounging at the beach side and cliff top pools. The staff was professional and fun! We had lunch served in our Villa and had dinner and a poolside lunch at the Maracuya Beach Club. The hills are steep and great for a good workout. Our villa offered a great view of the hillsides as well as a sunset view over the Pacific Ocean.
