For our first trip to Costa Rica, we stayed at this fabulous house. High on the hill, it commands a fabulous view across the water to Playa Flamingo, that can also be seen from the infinity pool. The house is run by Ben and you feel part of the extended family. It was really helpful to have a car but taxis are cheap and Ben and his parents were extremely helpful, with many wonderful ideas. One of the best B & B we have stayed in.

Colores Del Pacifico was so wonderful, three nights became four. Our gracious hosts set us up in the wonderful, spacious, private Cielo suite. The panorama of hills, sky and beach looked splendid from our own pool, balcony, bedroom, and living- dining- kitchen areas. Sunsets were striking. Fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, bread and coffee stocked in the fridge made for lovely DIY balcony breakfasts. We could have been served in the comfy Colores dining lounge, with a large infinity pool and water vista. We never tried it.
A fifteen-minute hike downhill left us to swim where Playas Potrero and Flamingo meet. Hiking south, we swam Playa Brasilito. Further south we found the best: beautiful white-sand Playa Conchal with its body-surfing waves. An hour of skilled Tica hands and a shaded massage table cost $20. Rejuvenation helps. The hike back to Colores ends with quite a climb, though taxis are quick and inexpensive.
The Colores property was fresh, clean, quiet, beautifully designed and appointed. Hosts Ben, Kathie and Yves are down to earth, amiable and happy to give a lift to a beach or choice dinner spot. Their responsive yet casual guest service blends B&B DIY with a visit to your best friends' beach estate. After sixteen years there, our resourceful hosts knew the area attractions. Ben helped us choose a catamaran snorkeling tour, restaurants, and negotiated taxi fares. One night he prepared and served a gourmet three-course meal to a half-dozen couples. This treat unfolded from a romantic overlook in the dining lounge. We left only to avoid shortening our stay in Monteverde. Muchas gracias y hasta luego, Colores!

Our honeymoon here was superb. The room was lovely as were all of the buildings and grounds. The atmosphere was very serene and away from the bustle of large condos/hotels. The views were gorgeous and hard to leave behind. Ben, Charlotte, and Yves were gracious hosts and attentive to our every need. We could not have asked for more and will definitely return.

My boyfriend and I were originally very excited about our stay at Colores del Pacifico. The pictures looked beautiful, as did the idea of sunsets in Playa Flamingo, and in general we were looking forward to relaxing at this property. Little did we know, our stay at Colores del Pacifico was our most stressful travel experience to date.

Colores del Pacifico is located near the top of a hill, and given the hot temperatures in the region and lack of rainfall, it is a region prone to fires. On our third day at Colores, when we were returning from a day at the beach, we spotted a fire near the top of the hill. As we approached in our taxi, we saw a number of employees hosing down the property next door, which was entirely lit in flames. Needless to say, Colores del Pacifico was in a cloud of smoke, and was at risk of going under fire as well. My boyfriend and I were told to quickly collect our belongings and leave, in the interest of our own safety. So we did just that, and ran down the long road from Colores with all our bags, in search of a hotel.

Given the last minute notice, we were only able to find a run-down hotel to stay in that evening, our last night in Costa Rica. We called Ben, Colores' manager, to check in on the fire and request reimbursement for the night's stay - which he agreed to. Over the past year, we've emailed Ben ~10-15 times asking for our reimbursement, and despite numerous responses from him, we have yet to receive our reimbursement, and it is very clear he does not intend to reimburse us.

I am telling you this story because I highly recommend staying elsewhere in Playa Flamingo. While the staff appears friendly, if anything goes wrong (Re: FIRE), they will not help you or reimburse you. They're also located at the top of the hill, and it is an expensive taxi ride to get to anywhere else in Playa Flamingo. You will be much better off staying at one of the many hotels located at ground level, closer to the water, and near restaurants in the area.

I have never written a TripAdvisor review before, but I felt it was necessary given the abysmal treatment we've received since our stay at Colores. I urge you to strongly consider staying elsewhere!

This place is a hidden gem.

If you want to try something different, this B&B is definitely worth a look. Very beautiful grounds with gorgeous views of Flamingo Bay and the surrounding area. Close walking proximity to good restaurants and the beach. The guest room was lovely: good size, very comfy king-sized bed with a big bathroom and shower. There are two guest rooms per building that share a huge kitchen (with everything you need for a home stay) and family room with a TV, plus an outdoor deck with a wraparound balcony and a shared, L-shaped infinity pool! We shared all of this with another couple for one day, but after they checked out we had this huge space (and this pool) all to ourselves! Wifi was fast and reliable.

About a 20 minute 'hike' along the bay to get to Flamingo and its primary beach where you'll find good restaurants and plenty to do. Nearby restaurants The Beach House and Coco Loco are recommended. Also we strongly recommend you drive about 15 minutes north to hike at Las Catalinas. An amazing array of hiking trails up and around the Pacific with lovely private beaches! Also you're only a 10 minute drive to a little town Brasilito with some dining options and a small beach and about 20 mins from Tamarindo, which is THE place to be in Guanacaste. Ben & Charlotte (and little Bastian) are lovely and run the place. They do an excellent job. We'll definitely be back and more people should check this place out.

Staying here was the highlight of our experience. Ben went out of his way to make us feel welcome during our entire trip, without hovering. The breakfasts were generous, the view incredible, the location ideal, and the overall experience perfect. We would gladly stay here again, and recommend it without hesitation.

We loved this place. It's not too large, but so lovely and calm. The views are truly spectacular and the owners are lovely. Only breakfast is served, but the accommodations are great. Our room was spacious and clean with great views.

It was a little hard to find up the winding dirt road because there is no signage from the main road. But we were so happy we got there. Long beach walks and some great food at Coco Loco. Even got to see a bonfire on the beach for the new moon. It is a happy place.

We stayed at this bed and breakfast in Playa Flamingo. It is absolutely beautiful and run by a lovely family. Our room was immaculate and spacious with a huge walkin shower and a lovely private balcony. The communal area with a beautiful infinity pool is a living room with an amazing view over the bay and into the Pacific. We spent a lot of time there because it was so inviting and beautiful. The breakfasts are scrumptious. And, there is a communal kitchen, which we availed ourselves of and made our own lunches and dinners on occasion. There is also a washing machine for people to use, and with only a few rooms in the bed and breakfast, there was no competition to use them. The family is happy to point you in the direction of good restaurants, too. We needed our rental car attended to and the young man who is the son of the owners couldn't have been more helpful, calling ahead and making sure that the company knew exactly what we needed fixed. As a bonus, there are wonderful yoga classes and massages. We wish we could stay longer! Big thumbs up!

We arrived at 01h30 due to a long flight delay, and the staff had kindly left instructions on how to find our room. Unfortunately we were pretty tired, having been awake over 25 hours, we only saw the front of two sheets in the clear plasti envelope, so spent about 40 minutes stumbling up and down the hilly site in the dark with two suitcases looking for our room. We saw plenty of wildlife, including a large tarantula on the outside wall of what we worked out was our bedroom. This is quite normal in this latitude. We found a lounge below our bedroom, overlooking the ocean, small infinity pool, feral cats on the settees and walking around on the kitchen surfaces. Grateful to get to bed about 02h30, the sheets were a bit cheap but we were so tired..... I was woken about an hour later by something crawling on the bed. We both jumped out of the bed so quickly we startled one of the cats walking on the bed, another one in the room. I eventually managed to get the cats out, my wife very upset as she is allergic to cats, she gets very itchy. Went back to sleep, cats in the room again an hour later, we found they were getting in via a door which we could not lock due to the bolt being broken. Jammed it with a chair. Neither of us could sleep properly, cats scratching at the door they were used to getting into kept us awake.
We went down to breakfast, lovely views over the bay. A lady asked us if we had found our room ok, when we tried to explain we had struggled she simply walked away. We sat down, waited, two other couples in the large room. No one approached us to show us what to do, we had to ask. We asked for tea, and chose the last two slices of brown bread to toast. There was plenty of cheap white bread, but only a little brown left. The serve yourself toaster did not work properly, it apparently only came on when you jammed down the lever really hard. We didn't know this, so our toast took ages. A gentleman asked if we would like fried or scrambled eggs. I asked for an omelette, my wife's request for poached eggs was not even entertained. Our bed and breakfast rate was over $200 per night. The eggs came, I got fried eggs with cheese on top, and explained this was not an omelette. My wife had to settle for fried. How's the tea coming on? "Coming soon!" after explaining to the cook how to make omelette, she produced a very good one. We asked for more brown bread, the gentleman had to go to the back and cut us the last two pieces. Thought I had got the hang of the toaster until the toast got stuck in the machine. Tea soon please? "Coming!" We were now alone in the room exept for one other couple. The gentleman behind the bar offered me a pair of metal tongs to extract the stuck toast, I declined, I wanted to enjoy my holiday without the luxury of free electrocution. While he was holding the toaster upside down trying to extract part of our breakfast the tea eventually arrived. The tea pot handle was so hot, I scalded my hand trying to lift it. I am a builder, I have tough skin. We used a cloth, tried to pour but the little clip which was supposed to hold the top on the teapot was not secured. The top of the pot came off, hot tea poured all over the table, over us, the floor. This was like Fawlty Towers, my wife wisely told me we were leaving. We had been there less than eight hours. For the price we paid, we expected a good nights sleep and decent breakfast, and as they were unable to provide either, we left.
We thought the owners of Colores del Pacifico would have been sufficiently concerned why pre-paying guests had left so abruptly they may try and contact us to find out what the problem was. They had our telephone numbers etc, but as we had not heard from the hotel for over two weeks after our return, we approached the owners on our return for a refund, we had booked and paid for seven nights. We thought we should pay for some of the time, but certainly not all of it. Our reasoning was we paid for bed and breakfast, neither of which was close to satisfactory, the breakfast was potentially life threatening!
The owners eventually responded, with an email headed "crazy guests" stating we were just not used to Costa Rican wildlife. Well, that's the main reason of our visit, nature. The owner also stated other guests had asked for "the cats to be taken away" but as he claimed the cats kept the snakes away, it was either, and I quote " cats or snakes". Well, we managed to find a lovely hotel very close by, on the beach, presumably with snakes as well as all the other wildlife. We had a good sleep, no cats in the room. We actually decided to stay at several places in our week in Costa Rica, from a luxury hotel and spa to a small B&B, $60 per night, right next to a lovely nature reserve. No cats in the rooms there either. The staff at these places were very polite, the cooks could also make any type of egg you wanted, no problem. The owner of Colores del Pacifico claimed in an email we had been offered an upgrade. This was just not true, we did not want and were not offered any upgrade, we just wanted to leave. He also claimed the cook had been with him ten years, enough time, I would have thought, to train them up to cook a simple omelette.
The views from Colores del Pacifico are lovely. The staff need training. They need to get a decent safe toaster, and if they only offer eggs for breakfast, which is fine, the cook should be able to offer more options than "fried or scrambled" for $200 per night. A comfortable sleep and enjoyable breakfast should be the minimum a small hotel like this should offer, and paying guests who have enjoyed neither should not be labelled crazy by the owner. Don't risk this place, we found much nicer places with helpful, friendly staff, at a lower cost, quite close by.
